1 comments about Design-Build Project Delivery.

  1. The traditional method of building a building was to have the owner contract with a designer, and subsequently to contract with a builder to do the actual construction. The problem comes from the fact that there was often confusted communications between the designer and the builder. Of course the designer and the builder had differing agendas, they each had different capabilities, different jobs. The result was unhappiness, if not law suits.

One answer to this conflict was the concept of using one contractor to both design and build the building. The result has been a 6% lower cost, and 12% faster (33% faster if design time is included) than design-bid-build projects.

This book is a survey of design-build from his history, a description of how it works, a report on numerous projects from the real world, legal/insurance/contract information, off shore design, new advances in technology such as RFID and GPS.

In short this is a book to take the owner/designer/contractor to a level of understanding where he can work in a design/build environment.

1 comments about Project Management in Construction.

  1. 1.I find it very important that Mr. Walker has emphasized the importance of teaching general management before entering into the realm of the complicated teaching of construction management. Constr. Mgt. is not an independent teaching, but a very special case of management. It has naturally to be based on the foundations of the GENERAL MANAGEMENT. Congratulations.. 2. He makes some original definitions of management. I highly appreciate his definitions like "Management is the dynamic input that makes the organization work.". However, I expected to find several chapters in this book, explaining the basic activities, general principles and the elements of management, EXACTLY what Henri Fayol has mentioned 100 years ago. 3. IEEE has updated Fayol's terminology at 1984, printed and distributed to its members, who lead the world's most important sector, electronics and computer industries, as a study of Prof. Irwin Gray from NewYork Inst. of Technology. This gives a very good idea about the freshness of Fayol's teachings. The, in construction mgt.mostly referred, famous Proj.Mgt. Institute is the worldwide known sub-org. of the IEEE, Inst. Of El.and Elktron. Eng.s in USa. 4. Every student of technical schools should be taugth management completely from Fayol's teachings,as they learn physics from Newton and Planck directly. I hope that the Author forgives the harsh expression of a veteran construction man: Anybody who teaches management should not attempt to find the definition of management from the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary' 100 years later than Fayol's excellent definition; no need to explore America again. 5. I congragulate the Author for mentioning H.Mintzberg in his book.. His analogy of construction projects with Mintzberg's configurations Professional B-aucracy and Ad-hocracy, is to be blessed. This analogy gives a good idea about the complexity of the construction, but underestimates the complicated task of management of construction projecst. I kindly remind that there is not a real management in adhocracy, and is very little in the professional b-racy. Management of a construction site of average size can only be compared with the most complex configuration of H. M-berg: THE DIVISIONAL FORM, with its numerous crews, subcontractors of various contracrs, its logistics, accounting, perfformance evaluations, etc. 6. I expected the Author of this valuable book would teach organization to the technical u-grad students directly from the teachings of Mintzberd and save several chapters for his teachings.. 7. This book is one of the best of its category I have ever read, on construction mgt, keeping Dennis Lock's place at the top, I hope the Author finds my comments not more than a few constructive remarks, and may take them into consideration for the further editions. Dr. Kirhan Dadasbilge, MSc.CE

1 comments about The Management of Construction: A Project Lifecycle Approach.

  1. I am surprised that the project samples are only limited with pipelines.

In a world of shopping mall, high rise residence and office tower contructions, none of these projects exist in this book.

Buy it only if you are in pipeline construction...!

1 comments about Careers in Architecture.

  1. In "Careers in Architecture" Blythe Camenson shares the process of education and career development for potential architects. The book is relatively brief, but full of vital information. It details aptitudes and preparation needed for architecture school, as well as the educational process and internship and licensing processes used in the profession. She also details information about allied professions such as urban and land use planners, landscape architects, and historic preservationists.

Central to the book are a series of interviews with a number of practicing architects in different specialties and at different points in their careers, which is very interesting and useful for focusing on areas of the profession most interesting to a specific reader. Also included are several listings of professional organizations, architecture schools, etc., along with contact information for each of them, in what may be the single most useful feature of the book.

The book is certainly enlightening regarding all aspects of the profession, and in some cases is nothing short of eye opening, for instance in the area of salary, in which the author reveals that a beginning architect can expect to make only $25,000 to $35,000 annually after completing school, a figure well below most other professions. Despite the salary wake up call, architecture still comes across as a vibrant, interesting career field, and any reader considering a career in architecture would be well advised to read this book.
