1. Even though these are obstensibly for the information of collectors, all the Schiffer books that I have ever gotten are magnificent just for the those who wistfully wish they could afford a piece. The reader can't handle the actual pieces, but it's about as close as one will get in a picture. And if one ever does get enough money to buy a piece, one will know what one wants.
   
   This is full of well-done color pictures and packed with a lot of information about the history and contemporary makers. There are other books with gorgeous shots of turquoise and silver, but the reader of this and the Bassman's other books will come away with some real understanding of the different styles, schools, and the cultural milieu of their creation.

The Book of Spinning Wheels presents a large variety of photographs accompanied by detailed information about the use and construction of each piece shown. A source like this can be especially valuable for helping to identify antique tools and figure out what pieces might be missing or broken. Recommended for spinners interested in the history of the craft, and antique dealers/shoppers who want to know what they're selling/buying. Unfortunately, it appears to be out of print and hard to acquire.

1. Great book by a knowledgeable and easy to understand author. The anecdotal recounts will help to keep everyone's interest, regardless of background.



2. Fred Ward is the author of the classic series on gems published in National Geographic magazine and this book displays similar quality. Meticulously researched, wonderfully photographed, it is a marvelous introduction to the subject.



3. Fred Ward has a clear and concise writing style. This book is comprehensive, despite it's slender size. It is stunningly illustrated, with fabulous photos of well-known, and ordinary, gemstones and objets d'art. A must for the fan of jewels and gemstones. I'm collecting all his books now.
