- Well.. the book is 17 years old...has many pretty pictures. Price guide is so far out of date is it unusable. Cant take in to account the Ebay factor w/prices...(SUPPLY -VS- DEMAND.) In short it is like comic book..Not really useful info; just FLUFF . Some nice pics...should be priced at 5.99 NOT - $20. Not useful to collector OR DEALER as its more of a show and tell book, w/ verY little tell. Would not recommend, unless you want to look at the pretty pics of items most of us have seen before...thats all that is in the book . NOT GOOD FOR A REFERENCE GUIDE -

- Unfortunately, the author knows more than your average expert. When you correct someone and tell them it is a cramped joint not a dovetailed joint down the side of that pot, it's rough when he can site books considered tops in the field stating the contrary. Still the items shown are unique, the content informative and I am glad to have this book in my collection.

- There are an awful lot of fantasy writers who would benefit in reading, if not this book, then one very like it. But that's not a recommendation.
I had the first edition, lost it, discovered the 2nd edition, was happy. Even if you're not a gem-shopper (I'm not), the book's worth it for the zillions of full-color photographs alone: you can *see* what all these gemstones look like. Arem discusses carats vs. karats, gem-cutting, mining, trivia and lore on various gemstones...a lot. There are other books on the same subject, of course, but this one's a decent survey.
