1 comments about Crooke's manual of marks, pottery & porcelain.

  1. My grandmother bought/sold/traded antique pottery and porcelain in the Seattle area for many years. She haunted the antique shops but it was the junkyards that drew her day after day, no matter the season.

Mind you, picking junk was not her task, as she defined it. She was the treasure hunter, very often finding valuable things others had overlooked. Her passion was pottery and porcelain. It kept her supported as well, although I really never knew much about that part of it. My mom would not allow me to take these 'junker junkets' with her and I suspect that was as much for my grandmother's sake as anything. It seemed I was quite clumsy as a child. Might have been. Sometimes still am. Doesn't matter.

I was reminded of her passion a few weeks ago, when a much-treasured little manual came to light from among storage boxes in our garage.

It is a small paper manual (4"x6"), published by E.E. Crooke in Indianapolis, Indiana. Copyright December 1, 1937. The original price was One Dollar.

It is still in its original brown mailing envelope. No, the marks from the post office are not visible because she also collected stamps. She'd apparently taken her scissors to this mailing envelope, neatly removing the stamp.

Her name is handwritten in very old-fashioned writing, right on the very top of the front cover. Her ink-stamped name and address are again stamped inside the back cover and in a couple places inside. Otherwise this little booklet is in perfect condition. She was taking no chances on its being mistaken for another junker's possession.

As far as the booklet itself is concerned, it would be invaluable to those who also search dusty attics and barns for old potteries. All the information in this manual has been personally researched by its author and publisher. He wrote this book not for the general public, but for those who were like himself as interested in the old pottery marks and their identifications.

Writers can sign their works, as can artists and photographers. Pottery and jewelry must be marked by the artist in some individual manner, preferably a symbol, one easily placed onto the finished product.

This manual is a 62 page list of the symbols hand-drawn by the author, with information about each artist or manufacturer, and where the reader can gain further information.

It is, all by itself, a Treasure.
