1. There clearly has been a need for this book for decades. This book is the culmination of years of work, no doubt! What a treasure to have. I've read them all, but for a collector, this is the only "bible".....

1. Nice for studies and examples of others work but value is underpriced. One must consider the value to the person collecting the china.



2. A must-have for collectors and antique dealers alike. This book details the history, production, and decoration of American handpainted porcelain, all with beautiful photographs and helpful illustrations. A key component is the identification and valuation of handpainted items.



3. Even though I had been collecting since 1984 I discovered how much there is to know about the subject. Full of history, insights, examples and references, plus beautiful format and photograpy.



4. Beautiful pictures, excellent information, nothing like it. For novice and advanced collectors I have not found a source so thorough. I suggest you contact the author and review this book. You won't be sorry

1. This excellent reference book is a must-have for any collector of this wonderful at pottery. The authors obviously took some real time and effort to put the book together, and their work really shows. There is a great section on the history of the pottery, with sections on past and recent history (including info about the Rocky River library purchase). There is discussion of the various artists who worked for or did designs for Cowan, including: Bogatay, Martin, Jossett, Gregory, Winter, Hummel, Cowan himself, and Schreckengost of course. A section discusses the bodyware, glaze, and pottery marks, and there is a special section on the famous Jazz Bowl.

   The rest of the book consists of an identification and value guide. It's chock-full of mostly color photos of various Cowan pieces, with sizes given, as well as prices (although it's worth noting that the prices are no longer quite accurate, due to the effect that online auctions have had on collectibles of late). The photos are sharp for the most part, with details shown clearly. All in all this is a great book for the Cowan collector.

   Her brightly coloured designs are instantly recognisable and it's this that makes Clarice Cliff one of the most influential ceramic designers of the last hundred years. She was a woman who rose from being an apprentice gilder in the potteries to a position as an art director, described by the press as a "brilliant girl artist." The striking range which she designed, decorated with "a gargantuan feast of colour", is now seen as the epitome of Art Deco and avidly collected. The modern spirit of her work captured the essence of the 1920s, a time when women were embracing new freedoms. Lynn Knight whose biography of Clarice Cliff tells the story of a woman who started out as a factory girl and became one of Britain's most distinctive designers. I found the book to be extremely entertaining and authoritative as well. Wealth of captivating stories and passages of time. Highly recommended.
