2 comments about Celluloid Collectibles: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. I found this little book to be quite an outstanding guide for the beginner. The book provides a general and overall understanding of celluloid and the "celluloid" era. By sheer coincidence, two of my celluloid clocks are pictured in this book. I definitely give the book a thumbs up!!!

  2. Shirely Dunn's guide to celluloid provides a useful history of the "Celluloid Era" of 1888 - 1920, including manufacturer's marks. She also includes color photos of a wide range of celluloid items, from clocks and toys, to manicure sets and advertising ware. Without an index, it is not very useful as a value guide.

A good book for beginners, but not too terrific if you want to identify & value a specific piece.

  1. The book has different figurines than book one. This makes it a must have in addition to the first book! As a collector I have looked through this book hundreds of times and am very glad I purchased it.

3 comments about Comprehensive Guide to American Painted Porcelain.

  1. This book is unlike any other Antique Trader guide I've ever used. Not only does it contain both a table of contents and an index, its content is well organized, comprehensive and very well written. Ms. Kamm approached the writing and compilation of the book with the same fervor Victorian's applied to their quest for perfection. Okay, enough of the hyperbole. If you're looking for a reference to help you identify the difference between a teapot and a chocolate pot, this is the book for you. Ms. Kamm has meticulously identified each piece of popular American painted porcelain, explained its purpose and identified its value. While there are not multiple examples of each piece (a volume of that scope would require at least ten times the space) this book will give you a basic knowledge of the various pieces, their function, and value. The layout is logical and creative, the text is engaging, the photos are gorgeous and the values are very realistic. Ms. Kamm has created a very good reference for the beginning collector or dealer.

  2. China painting was a popular pastime in the Victorian era. This book is very useful in identifying items from the period 1877-1917. Some pieces are unmarked and some are marked with various manufacturers but were sold as "blanks" and decorated. Descriptions of how the items were used at the turn of the century, outlines of how the items were produced, and examination of the styles of painting are considered in evaluation and in valuation. Values in average retail range were given for approximately 400 pieces. Artists and studios are listed so that you can find out more about your signed pieces. I wish more information was available on the decals used.

  3. When I received the Comprehensive Guide to American Painted Porcelain, by Dorothy Kamm, I was concerned that this would be a rehash of her previous book entitled, American Painted Porcelain. But to my suprise and satisfaction, this book is the perfect companion to the first. Whereas the first book answered general questions regarding identifying and pricing American hand painted porcelain treasures, her new book goes into greater detail regarding the history, function, and the importance of these pieces within the American culture, emphasizing the Victorian, and post-Victorian era. Having read this book from cover to cover, I feel more confident in identifying, pricing, and understanding the significance of these art treasures. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in porcelain and/or Victorian history. This book is a steal relative to the wealth of information conveyed to the reader.

2 comments about The Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta: With Harlequin, Riviera, and Kitchen Craft (Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta).

  1. So what sets this book up to be any different than any other collectible book? "The Laughlin story" We came real close to calling this Shakespeare pottery. Just the history and the changing technology is worth reading about.

After that is my favorite. "That Radioactive Red"

As the title implies there are sections with stories on Harlequin, Riviera, and Kitchen Kraft

In the back there are suggested values and a list of Collector Books for further reading.

One major item, the pictures are in color.

  2. Whether you have 2 pieces or 200 pieces of Fiestaware, this is the best handbook around. The Huxfords explain Fiestaware's history thoroughly. The collector will also be grateful for the many beautiful pix and credible pricing guidelines. As my dog-eared copy can attest, the guidebook will become your best friend when Fiesta shopping!
I give this book a 10, but I hope the next edition - which is rumored to be out in 1998 - will address the new Fiesta line as some colors are now very collectible.

4 comments about American Painted Porcelain: Collector's Identification & Value Guide.

  1. Nice for studies and examples of others work but value is underpriced. One must consider the value to the person collecting the china.

  2. A must-have for collectors and antique dealers alike. This book details the history, production, and decoration of American handpainted porcelain, all with beautiful photographs and helpful illustrations. A key component is the identification and valuation of handpainted items.

  3. Even though I had been collecting since 1984 I discovered how much there is to know about the subject. Full of history, insights, examples and references, plus beautiful format and photograpy.

  4. Beautiful pictures, excellent information, nothing like it. For novice and advanced collectors I have not found a source so thorough. I suggest you contact the author and review this book. You won't be sorry
