1 comments about Seminole Views: A Postcard Panorama of America's Only Unconquered Tribe.

  1. I was amazed at the many personal insights of members of the tribe themselves. Many bits and pieces of history and tribal stories fleshed out a great blank spot in my understanding of the Seminole people. I continue to find new gems of insight everytime I leaf through the book. Well done!

2 comments about Postcards from Santa Claus: Sights and Sentiments from the Last Century.

  1. The author has put together a wonderful book that gives the reader a Santa Claus history & how events of the times were seen in Santa postcards through the years. Santa trade cards, Santa holiday cards, even Santa cards from Elvis, it covers the periods from the late 1800s to the present. Descriptions accompanying all the beautiful illustrations are really interesting, very informative. I really loved this book. Makes a great gift too.

  2. This is a great Christmas edition and stocking stuffer. The selection of postcards is superb and the photography captures the range of holiday examples excellently. The written narrative is a perfect accompaniment to the delightful collection.

3 comments about Lost New York in Old Postcards.

  1. The book brought back memories of good times.
Nice to see some things that are no longer around,
especially when the things put up after were not as grand.
Sorry I didn't save my old postcards.

  2. Kennedy's book has brought to life the New York that I've only heard about. Lost New York in Postcards sparked memories from everyone in my family and made Christmas 2001 a very special day. The brilliance of the illustrations and the charm of the narrative make this a book worth owning.

  3. Kennedy's collection brings to life the old New York I never knew, but now wish I had... The graphics are fabulous, and, together with the well-executed captions, provide insight into what this magnificent city was like in its hey-day. Well worth the price! The book is as colorful as the city it paints -- and Kennedy's love for New York shines through on every page.

1 comments about Grundy County (IL) (Postcard History Series).

  1. This wonderful little book is part of Arcadia Publishing's Postcard History series, and focuses on Grundy County, Illinois. It is chock full of black-and-white postcard shots from just about everywhere around the county - from Morris to Coal City to Channahon and beyond. Each postcard has an interesting and highly informative caption. The postcards themselves are organized by type, which pretty much organizes them by era - Early Private Mailing Cares (1880-1901), Undivided-Back Postcards (1901-1907), Divided-Back Postcards (1907-1914), White-Border and Divided-Back Postcards (1915-1930) and Linen and Photochrome Postcards (1993-2007).

Overall, I found this to be a wonderful book, and like all of the books in this series, it is a great resource for any genealogist looking to capture information on the Grundy County of yesteryear. My one and only complaint against this wonderful book is that it would have been nice if the published has included an index of the postcards by town.

But, that one small complaint aside, I do consider this to be a great book, one that is sure to interest anyone interested in Grundy County.

1 comments about Greetings from Cincinnati.

  1. Images of 225 postcards in Mary L. Martin, Ltd. collection are OK but there are few details of original postcards - cancel dates or estimated dates are supplied in captions but sizes of original cards are not given and reproduction sizes vary. There is no transcription of information from card backs -- no publisher nor photographer information given. A disappointment to collectors.
Historical text is filled with errors. Text reads like copy for a version of "Jay-walking" for Jay Leno show -- author is uninformed and ignorant. Too bad publisher did not edit book. A quick look at Internet would have indicated gross inaccuracies in the text.

1 comments about The Artist-Signed Postcard Price Guide: A Comprehensive Reference.

  1. Mashburn writes terrific books. His Postcard Guide is the best general book out there. He also does specialized postcard books such as this one. Anyone who collects artist-signed postcards will want this book, no question about it.

It is filled with hundreds of pages and pictures of all our favorite artists, like Harrison Fisher, Philip Boileau, Earl Christy, as well as the more obscure yet fabulous artists like Lupiac and others. He covers a variety of categories, like Beautiful Ladies, Beautiful Children, Nudes, Blacks, Sports, and Comics. He includes a reference section in the front which goes over important information such as how to determine the age of a card, grade a card's condition, and so on. My only quibble with this book is that all the inside images are in black and white, and I would have loved to see some in color. Perhaps in the next edition.

If you're looking for a comprehensive reference on Artist-Signed postcards, this is the book to buy.
