3 comments about 1100 Marks on Foreign Pottery & Porcelain.

  1. This book is a wast of time. There are marks with no explanations and explanations with no marks. The book skips sequences almost like there are pages missing. Trying to use this book in dating a piece is hopeless.

Please save your money and don't buy this book.

  2. Very good if your looking for very old marks

  3. This book has a terrific layout. The right page has 50 or more markings while the left page lists easily referenced details. Unfortunately, the details can be sketchy. For example, (one listing) Paris, some factory, Charles Phillipe or (another listing) Sceaux? or Bourg la Reine? Doubtful.

I bought this book to accompany me on my European flea market travels. It is a reprint of a book originally published in 1937. So all of the markings are for things that are much older than I'm likely to find in our local flea markets. However, should I come across one, I'll be ready for it. :)

2 comments about Old Limoges: Haviland Porcelain Design and Decor, 1845-1865.

  1. Well researched and written book about a specialized period of David Haviland Limoges. Beautiful photographs. Good resource for the collector or dealer.

  2. This book is so informative! It has documentation of designs from the old companies. It has pictures of the most beautiful early Limoges I have ever seen. Almost like visiting a museum.

5 comments about If These Pots Could Talk: Collecting 2,000 Years of British Household Pottery.

  1. One of the better overviews of everyday household pottery I've come across. The author makes it like taking a lively personable tour of pieces from 2000 years ago to the present. Great ideas for potters and a nice presentation for pottery lovers as well

  2. This is the largest, heaviest book I own. Really! I thought it would take years to get through, but the pages are quite thick, and it's well-written. A fun book for the pottery enthusiast who is already familiar with the basics, it gives numerous insights into the detective work employed in the course of archeological research. Refreshingly personal on the part of the author. Each chapter is an appitizer that stimulates the reader's interest in another facet of (unfortunately) rarely encountered pottery. The charming cover adds to the book's appeal as a coffee-table selection, but make sure the table has sturdy legs!

  3. Noel Hume compiled this wonderful treasury of ceramics mostly from his personal collection. This book is invaluable in my Colonial Archaeology class. Even if you are midly interested in ceramics, this beautifully illustrated book is an easy read, and very informative.

  4. This is a comprehensive review of British pottery and ceramics written by eminent retired archeologist of Colonial Williamsburg and writer Ivor Noel-Hume. It reviews British ceramics for a period covering the past 2000 years and is particularly interesting to Americans because most of the ceramics recovered in American colonial sites were of British origin or European origin associated with the British colonial trade and were therefore exported to the colonies. Noel-Hume is an excellent and entertaining writer and he make the book interesting with personal accounts of how he and his wife Audrey, also an eminent archeologist, collected or recovered many of the examples shown. I would recomend this book to anyone interested archeaology or pottery/ceramics.

  5. When I look for a good book on pottery and Porcelain, I always look for something that will not "lull me to sleep" with drole monotone type sentences, but rather something that presents not only important details, facts and descriptions but does so in a interesting manner. With "If these Pots Could Talk" you get everything! From enjoyable "in the field stories" to truly illuminating facts that ever increases ones appreciation of the "pots and dishes" that so many are hasty to overlook once they hear that they hold no "intristic market value".
This book makes the studying of pottery and porcelain not only interesting but also something that is rarely heard of in the "sophisticated collecting field" FUN!

2 comments about The Art of the Limoges Box.

  1. This is a great book for anyone interested in art, history, or Limoges boxes themselves. The well-written pages and colorful photos invoke a sense of the time and history behind these artistic pieces. It starts with the early days of snuffboxes and ends with examples of the modern counterparts, giving you a full scope of the changes and constants throughout the years. "The Art of the Limoges Box" is a great addition to any artistic library.

  2. This book is lovely to see and fairly helpful, especially if you are a newcomer to Limoge box collecting. It has enabled me to find several of the boxes that i have and their approximate worth. Has a grat section on avoiding fakes that everyone interested in Limoge boxes should read

  1. For anyone interested in this facinating subject...this book is the "bible!" Thank you Betty Monkman for updating this history and for letting "fans of the White House" like me - be able to learn so much! I truly dream of someday having dinner off some of this china!

2 comments about Kovels' Depression Glass and Dinnerware Price List, 8th edition (Kovel's Depression Glass and Dinnerware Price List).

  1. I was very pleased to find this item Used, to save money.
The copy I bought was in fine condition.
The seller kindly arranged to have it arrive in time for my deadline.
    Very positive experience.

  2. Great resource for depression glass as long as you can identify by written description and not picture. Few close-up pics and those in black and white are not enough to help in close ID situations like the Sandwich pattern. In comparison, Warman's book has a great section with a pie slice of each pattern shown that is very helpful. This book is excellent for accurate written information but not as good for visual identification.

3 comments about Japanese Porcelain 1800-1950 (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. "Japanese Porcelain 1800-1950" includes information on a number of porcelain makers not commonly available making It an excellent reference book for collectors and dealers, or even as a coffee table book. The superb photography and detailed history of Japanese companies and artists make this a valuable addition any library of Asian art.

  2. Lovely coffee table book, and had information I needed, however due to the fault of the printer the first paragraph was missing from the book, as well as another further along.
But the book was so inexpensive, can't complain.

  3. A large format book with about 45% of the numerous illustrations in color, this work presents specimans of the full range of styles; Arita and Imari, Hirado, Kakiemon, Nabashima, Kutani, Satsuma, Kyoto-Satsuma, Seto and Nagoya. A wonderful resource for dealers and collectors.

4 comments about Forgotten Elegance: The Art, Artifacts, and Peculiar History of Victorian and Edwardian Entertaining in America.

  1. Mr. Schollander,
This is a very good reference and resource for further research and I am very satisfied with your book. But....even though the flatware section had good coverage , the serving pieces were left out. This would include Tomato, Cucumber, Sardine, Fish, Salad, Cake, Macaroni, Ladels, etc, etc, etc. I realize this is not only a silverware book but these items were a very important part of the Victorian table. Please come out with a 2nd printing and a more extensive version.
    Thank You
    Sincerely,
    Keith T. Kalkanoff

  2. I've never read a better resource for historians, historical fiction writers and Victorian/Edwardian enthusiasts. Forgotten Elegance is replete with photographs, diagrams and text culled from primary resources on the art of dining and entertaining. Though this book is fairly pricey it is a TOP resource and owning a copy of this book will supplement any and every other book on the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

  3. This book is very detailed and informative. The bibliography is very extensive and I have found several more books that I find useful for my own collecting. However, considering the price of $62.95, I was a expecting more photos and a larger format.

  4. This is a great book for anyone interested in the use of china and silverware in the Victorian Era and the functions of each piece. It is also a great guide for antique shopping or junking. I know I have seen some of those odd pieces of china and silver and never knew what they were used for. Now that I do, I can add to my collection with confidence.
