2 comments about The Bulfinch Anatomy of Antique China and Silver: An Illustrated Guide to Tableware, Identifying Period, Detail and Design.

  1. This book is organized well, easy to understand and nicely illustrated. Provides a picture time line of the evolution of tableware and eating customs. Very interesting and helpful to the novice in developing an understanding of manufacture, style and utilization of table ware Readers shoul have an increased ability to identify pieces as to their origin, era and use. Only short coming was the book did not provide illustrations of the manufacturers marks. The author talked about them but should have shown them as they can help with the identification of the piece.

  2. The reader is taken on a tour through the ages from the 16th century to the Retro period. Each general period, representing changes in design, style and use, begins with a table setting demonstrating functionality. Feature articles focus on important changes or developments in each period. A new perspective and understanding is, indeed, imparted.

1 comments about The Sevres Porcelain Manufactory: Alexandre Brongniart and the Triumph of Art and Industry, 1800-1847 (Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design & Culture).

  1. I have been searching for at least a decade for a book on the Sevres production during the Napoleonic Years. This book is exactly what I was looking for and the essays and tremendous illustrations are what made this book worth the search!

2 comments about Diana an Illustrated Collection and Price Guide: Porcelain Plates.

  1. I expected more from this book after seeing the beautiful cover but this is a poor quality book in my opinion. Black & white pictures and very poor photography. Can't believe this actually went to press. Looks like something that put out by high schoolers.

  2. I bought this book to help me add plates to my Princess Diana Collection! WOW ~ What a GUIDE BOOK!!! This book has all the tools I need to find the plates I want. There is a reference section complete with addresses, phone numbers & emails. There are even descriptions of each picture, telling me all about Diana's jewelry & dresses. This book is informative AND Interesting. I can't wait to purchase the other two volumes in this series!!!!

  1. A good book for beginners, but as the title says: Basics, not much on special techniques like dusting, grounding or luster.

1 comments about Taking Tea With Clarice Cliff: A Celebration of Her Art Deco Teaware.

  1. As a collector of Clarice Cliff, I read almost anything relating to her. Clarice was way ahead of her time. She was an uneducated British girl in the 1920's who through hard work and brilliant ideas became a pioneer in art deco ceramics. Leonard Griffin is a master scholar of Clarice and this book was another one of his carefully reviewed study of her work.
Identifying her teaware as a celebration is absolutely true. Almost 80 years later, her work is more collectible than ever and it is fascinating to read how she evolved her designs and manufacturing ideas into the most beautiful teaware.

1 comments about Royal Copenhagen Porcelain: Animals and Figurines.

  1. Wonderfully illustrated and very thorough, but difficult to follow. There was more information about each piece and the history of it than I ever expected. Only complaint is that the information is broken up in different tables in the front and in the back; ButI learned a lot about figurines and the history of Royal Copenhagen from this informative book.

5 comments about Restaurant China : Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware (Volume 2).

  1. In this second volume of her series for collectors, Barbara Conroy shares the details of hundreds of manufacturers that produced dinnerware for restaurant and transportation companies. The section on each manufacturer includes a detailed history, examples of the backstamps they used (along with date charts where applicable), copies of period advertisements, and *lots* of fantastic photographs showing the range of wares produced. This book is an invaluable reference, and a must-have for the serious commercial dinnerware collector!

  2. I have had this book for 3 months and still have not put it down. Great source to I.D. all kinds of china and the date codes. I can't wait for Volume 3!

  3. I have been using both of Mrs. Conroy's books extensively for the past 2 months in preparing for the biggest research project I have ever done with restaurant, railroad, steamship, and hotel china. Book 2 on the date codes has been a lifesaver. It was not until about 2 months ago that I really realized just how much time and effort she had put into it making these possible. Having a handy reference (especially for backstamp dating of pieces) is beyond valuable. It is a "masterpiece."

  4. A superb reference book for the serious collector / dealer. The appendix sections devoted to distributors, restaurants and hotel chains are special interest. Often collectors interests are in a narrow field - such a book helps to widen their appreciation of other collecting opportunities.

  5. Two Words - "Invaluable Resource!" Any collector of Restaurant China should not be without this identification and reference guide. Can't wait for Volume 3.
