4 comments about Warman's Barbie Doll Field Guide (Warman's Field Guides).

  1. According to my little friend who received this guide as a gift, It is easy to understand, teaches you some very interesting Barbie history, and show great photos of early Barbie, how they progress and their value. She highly reccommends it.

  2. This books size makes it convenient to carry around to garage sales or toy shows. But the content could be better, some dolls are depicted with inaccurate prices and some vintage doll's aren't pictured in their proper outfits with proper accessories. So this can become confusing for the beginner collector. However there are "warnings" listed with some vintage outfits stating that Mattel has made a reproduction (these are worth far less) of it. This is a great feature if you are not a Barbie expert.

A good book for the beginner, but I recommend using this guide along with a larger more detailed Barbie book.

  3. What a wonderful book! The Warman's Barbie Doll Field Guide is packed with useful information and great color photographs. And all at a super affordable price. I'm impressed. The book is designed as a take-along pocket guide, yet it's amazingly complete and thorough. It covers six decades of Barbie dolls, provides several hundred color photographs, a history of Barbie, critical identification information, -- including how to identify Barbie No. 1 -- fashion sets, designer dolls and a price guide to more than 1,500 dolls. It's perfect for a gift or for yourself, or even as a gift for yourself. I have several Barbie books on my shelves, and that's where they stay. But this little dynamo is never going to leave my side.

  4. First thought upon getting this, it's tiny! I've been waiting at least two months for this book to come out and I was a tad upset that the price guide is not up-to-date. NOTHING that came out in 2002 is in there, nor are any non-collector dolls listed.

If you need a pocket guide to carry to conventions, it's perfect. If you want something to help you figure out how much to bid on E-Bay, it's perfect. Otherwise, just get it for the vibrant color pictures (No black & white) , which strangly have dolls that haven't even been released yet.

1 comments about Barbie the First 30 Years, 1959 Through 1989 and Beyond: Identification & Value Guide (Barbie the First 30 Years).

  1. This book is a good starting point for collectors. With information on vintage dolls and even some newer dolls too. This book explains How to use the price guide, since most dolls found are not truly mint or mint in the box. It also has lots of color photographs, to make identification of a doll easy. The layout of this book is nice too, there are different sections for dolls, outfits, cases and so on. Dolls are listed by year, making a particular Barbie or Friend fairly easy to find.
This book is not as in depth as some other Barbie doll books on the market, you will not be able to find specific markings for each doll as well as a complete list of accessories - exactly what booklet, shoes, wrist tag, box (and so on) each doll came with. Also some of the photographs are fairly small, but that said, this is still a good book.
I would also like to add that this book features many foreign dolls and accessories, Not sold in the US. (Lot's of Barbie stuff that were exclusive to Canadian and European, as well as other markets.)

5 comments about The Playmakers: Amazing Origins of Timeless Toys.

  1. Looking at this book reminded me of the many toys and games that I grew up with or found in the attic when I went snooping through the old stuff as a kid. This book is very well done, with lots of pictures and interesting facts. It is obvious that the book is very well researched. Worth the money.

  2. I was looking for a price guide for these toys and this isn't it, but I didn't even care because this book is fabulous. Wonderful pictures and the origination of the most beloved toys. Big, thick heavy book. Nice coffee table book.

  3. If you have fond recollections of tossing a Frisbee with a friend, putting a hotel on Boardwalk, using a "Q" on a triple word score, dressing a Barbie doll, watching a Slinky descend a stairway, yelling "Yahtzee," or winning a game of Trivial Pursuit or Pictionary, this fine retrospective by Tim Walsh belongs on your coffee table. All those memories and more came back for me as I turned the pages of "The Playmakers -- Amazing Origins of Timeless Toys" and learned of the inspirations, the struggles, the near-misses and the overwhelming successes of toy and game inventors of the 20th Century. The nostalgic experience and the well-researched backgrounds of these fun and educational diversions make for hours of reading and fact-finding enjoyment. I was surprised to learn that most of the big sellers over the decades have been of American origin -- though Trivial Pursuit came out of Canada and Rubik's Cube has Hungarian roots. It's a bullet-proof selection for anyone on your Christmas list who never quite grew up when it comes to playing with toys and games.

  4. Have you ever wondered who the creators are of the wonderful toys and games you and your family have enjoyed over the years? THE PLAYMAKERS has the answers. You may be especially interested in those most famous or very rare toys or games that you have tried or maybe just heard about over the years.

Even those that may deny they are toy lovers must admit they have some time or another played a game they really enjoyed or had a favorite toy of their childhood. Therefore, everyone is a toy lover! THE PLAYMAKERS will bring back memories of happy times for all ages. The collective book Tim Walsh has put together is remarkable. This is not about toys that can be picked up in any toy store or mall or even those toys made just for children. No, no, no! This is about toys for everyone: young and old, male and female. Toys and games made for all to enjoy.

This colorful, informative book by Tim Walsh is so fascinating that every family should have one in their bookcase. THE PLAYMAKERS is a terrific book that is not only fun to read but is also an historical chapter in the civilization of man.

  5. A flip through the pages of Tim Walsh's "The Playmakers" is a trip in a time machine. I had more fun reminiscing about my favorite toys than I remember having when I played with them 25 years ago! The genesis of the greatest toys of all time is a captivating story that has never before been told in such interesting detail. Tim's passion for playthings oozes from the pages and stirred nostalgia in the heart of this overgrown kid.

1 comments about Treasury of Barbie Doll Accessories: 1961-1995.

  1. Upon opening this guide, Rupp demonstrates immediately why it is so essential to have this book in your library. From the Table of Contents page, all the way through to the Epilogue, Rupp presents the reader with 412 of the clearest, most colorful photos of Barbie doll accessories made from 1961-1995. With each picture, a caption is provided desribing these treasures with dates they were copyrighted, and other interesting tidbits that some of us have forgotten (i.e. Sear's exclusive, working escalators, even product I.D. numbers). Cases, houses, paper dolls, and colognes are covered. There's enough here to provide any child or fan of the 70's and 80's with lots of opportunities to reminisce and learn. Rupp has done a fantastic job. One look through this book will have you exclaiming, "Wow! I had that!" An excellent source of entertainment and education.

5 comments about Pokemon Collector's Value Guide: Secondary Market Price Guide and Collector Handbook (Collector's Value Guides).

  1. Just like the title for this review. No more, no less.

  2. I am pleased to say that this excellent guide has brought much information about the incredibly popular Pokémon trading card game, and much knowledge about the Pokémon merchandise. Checkerbee Publishing has made a incredible value guide, considering that they included transalations for the Japanese poket monster trading card game, pictures of the cards, and such information is included in American Pokémon card game which is also featured in this book. Though this book has it's pros, it also has cons. No estimated prices are given about the American Fossil Cards, and few people are sure that the Japanese transalations are 100% accurate. Though, that should not stop you from buying this stupendous guide. I am very sure this will satisfy thous who are in need of Pokémon information.

  3. i bought this book because it looked cool. but i read some of it there was alot of misprints!

  4. This book is a really good source if you want to know how much your pokemon cards are worth. This book has the values of rares, commons, and uncommons. And it even has the values of japanese cards. If you want to get a pokemon price guide, i suggest you buy this one.

  5. IF you can't under stand you japanies cards fear no more. This book tells you what it says.

5 comments about The Barbie Doll Years: A Comprehensive Listing & Value Guide of Dolls & Accessories (Barbie Doll Years).

  1. This book is exactly what it says - a comprehensive review and has an amazing amount of information. This book is perfect for those collectors who still have the doll or product with the original packaging and want an approximate value of that doll or product. The dolls/products are listed by the "title" of the product, i.e. Millenium Bride. What it does not have is alot of pictures.

If you are trying to find out what a particular doll is and/or the value - and all you have is the doll - this is not the best book for the task.

  2. I love this book, I buy the updated version everytime it comes out. Easy listings so that I can keep track of the value of my collection

  3. I read the other reviews of this book, and it sounded like it was a good bet. What the other reviews DIDN'T say is that this book is only for those who have New In The Box items! For the average collector who finds dolls in antique malls and garage sales, this is worthless. It only prices items that are unopened in original boxes - perfect mint condition! There are no prices for any other condition level. Also there are virtually NO pictures, making it impossible to use to identify various models . Several reviewers made a big point of there being 50 pages of pictures(actually in the 5th edition it's only 29 pages, 3-6 photos per page, most are of only a single item). Only a handful of Barbies are pictured, with the rest of the pictures being other special items. So if you have one of those typical dolls found in a sale that doesn't have a box with a model number, good luck trying to figure out what you have. This book is worthless for trying to identify which Barbie you are holding, and there is no information at all in the book about identifying the knock-off copies of Barbie on the market. It is strictly a price list by year or model number, with no other information of any kind. If everything you have has boxes with model numbers, the other reviews are right - it's a good book with a VERY comprehensive listing - over 9,000 different items (see why 100 photos is no big deal?!). But if your Barbies are unidentified and in less than store shelf condition, forget it. This book is, a waste of time and money.

  4. This book has a couple of pictures in the front. And the rest are complete and extense lists (vintage & modern dolls and accesories). But the prices are usually not accurate. And to be honest there is no actual good price list to apply to the second market barbie. You pay what you want and can afford. So, it is completely useless to have this book, since 1- It only contains names (no pictures) so it is hard to identify something unless it is NRFB - (in which case you don't need to because it says what it is on the box). 2- The prices are unrealistic.

  5. I had a huge box of Barbies from various years. This book helped to identify them. I also recommend a fun read about dolls, Dolls Aren't Just for Kids.

5 comments about Hamburger Heaven: The Illustrated History of the Hamburger.

  1. Hamburger Heaven is a blast to the past, when there were Drive-Ins instead of drive-throughs. Starting with the history of the hamburgers as it related to the Tartars and brings it into the 70's, 80's and then 90's. It reports on the glory days of the Hamburger, when McDonald's was in it's infancy and there were far more unique chains than we can dream of today.

The history of the hamburger is much richer than most could imagine, and Tennyson does a wonderful job of exploring the past. Presented not only with facts, but with pictures, he does a wonderful job of showing the past so it's not only interesting, but nostalgic.

I love the fact that he is clearly enamored with his subject, and I love all the older graphics and pictures depicting the chains we have lost along the way. My only complaint about the book, and the reason that it got 4 stars instead of 5, was he doesn't talk about the excellent, out of the way places still open! Yes, he has two pages of addresses in the back, but only addresses. He doesn't tell us anything about these places, about what makes their burgers special. I would have really liked that.

The only other thing I want to say is that Tennyson is a graphic designer, and that does show. There are equal numbers of pages dedicated to graphics as there are to words, and sometimes the words are crowded by the graphics.

Over all, though, a nice, charming book.

  2. If you like hamburgers and nostalgia like me, you will love the book Hamburger Heaven. I've literally spent hours flipping through this book. Sometimes I just look at the picture and other times I have read the whole book over. Who ever knew there was such a rich history behind the common hamburger?

This book is great for the coffee table too, and it has been the source of countless conversations with my friends who just happened to pick it up.

  3. Hamburger Heaven is a delight. Five Stars isn't nearly enough to rate this eloquent, visually brilliant, ode to the nexus mundi of fast food gastranomies.

All aspects of Hamburger evolution are included here - the early, hotly-disputed origins of the beloved patty; the concomitant rise of the hamburger and the highway; the first real chains; the evolution of McDonald's, Burger King, and other current hamburger giants; and everything in between.

Moreover, the book is worth the price for the illustrations alone!

For anyone who appreciates the sheer nostalgia of burgers - the ads they spawned, the intimate connection between hamburgers and the ascendancy of the automobile and the simply delicious fusion of fast-food culinary genius, architectural treasures (in the form of early diners and drive-ins) and the thousand-and-one ways in which the almighty hamburger has changed our lives - this is THE historical record.

    Read it with relish!

  4. From it's inauspicious beginnings in the late 19th Century in America, this book follows the burger craze from it's supposed creation at the 1904 World's Fair through the present day.

You'll find out how the architecture of burger stands was both a reflection of and inspiration for the development of 20th Century American pop culture.

Every successful "hamburg" purveyor had its imitators, but the author shows how the rise of the "Big Boy" chain was an important predecessor of today's omnipresent McDonald's, Burger King's, Wendy's, et al.

The book is marinated with vintage photos, and concludes that America is still in love with the "slider" as evidenced by the Checkers chain's success.

If you're looking for a book on the history of the Wurlitzer adorned diners of the Art Deco era, this isn't the one. But this is a great book for people who want to know if there was life before Mickey D's two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.

A fun and quick read that you'll love to share with children and grandchildren alike.

  5. Hello, my name is Wayne Henderson and I am the author of 8, going on 10 books on petroleum collectibles and the history of service stations and gasoline marketing. I am also a publisher of nostalgia books, and a collectibles magazine, and when I read Hamburger Heaven, I found it to be an absolutely fascinating look at the cultural icons all around us...fast food restaurants. Since I have been so deeply involved in other "roadside" Americana, I've always been interested in other "roadside" interest books. Folks, this is one of the best. And a note to the author...If you see this, I have some information that may be of interest. E-Mail me at PCMPublishing@worldnet.att.net. Thanks! It's a great book!
