5 comments about The Monkees Collectibles Price Guide: Collectibles Price Guide.

  1. I am late on reviewing this book but had to comment. I LOVE this book. Very goog work and research! Great photography! It's so nice to see someone put this much effort in a Monkees collectible book. My only complaint is the records are not valued correctly. We need a Monkees record collecting guide. If not for values, just to see the great world wide covers of the albums, single and EP's that differ from country to country.

Marty Eck ( Is that his real name?)bought most of the items in this book. Since most of us could never afford such a collection or FIND some of these gems, this is a great coffee table book. Again with putting values on collectibles, any kinds, is a matter of supply and demand.

To me, Ebay is where I usually can find recent values. Being a Monkees record collector, I am thinking of joining forces with a major colector in the UK to create the book I always wanted. This book is a great asset to anyone's Monkees collection! Buy it!

  2. I love this book it has everything you need to know what is very valuable. There's a lot of interesting stuff in it that was very popular and sold very well back then when the Monkees were quite hot......So I also consider this book a classic because it has so much information in it I just love it......

  3. If you enjoyed The Monkees you can't miss with this 208 page, softbound volume that contains more than 400 large, sharp, full color photos of every type of The Monkees collectible. More than 600 items are documented and priced for the period 1966 to 1972. Pre-Monkees items involving individual band members are included. Topics range from The Monkees history, books, magazines, music, fan clubs, trading cards, concert items, movies and counterfeit items. There is sufficient text included that is interesting and informative. If you were a Monkees fan you'll enjoy reliving times past. A super book you'll enjoy. Add it to your library.

  5. I also know the Author very well and I am glad that he finally put out the one and only Monkees Price guide. I do recommend it. I have bought stuff from the author personally and he really know this stuff.

2 comments about Classic Coca-Cola Calendars.

  1. This new hardbound 176 page beauty of a library volume with colorful plastic laminated covers features 125 full color and 20 black and white very large, sharp photos of these gems. Its loaded with information including: Development of early printing and advertising, role of promotional materials in the early years of the Coca-Cola Company, Distributor Calendars, Bottler Calendars, Foreign Calendars, Home and Reference Calendars. A complete Guide For Collectors tells you what to collect, preservation and display of early calendars, protecting, restoration info, and a very complete grading guide. 1999 values are shown in 3 grades. A really beautiful and unique new reference that belongs in the collector's library.

  2. Second book in Petretti's/Beyer's comprehensive look at specific areas of Coca-Cola collecting. This book provides a great deal of history behind the calendars as well as some beautiful color pictures of nearly every calendar that Coke ever released, including some very rare pre-1900 calendars. There is a guide to storing and preserving calendars in the back, as well as the most up-to-date price guide available on the subject. Those who bought Classic Coca-Cola Trays know what to expect and others should be pleasantly surprised. Recommend this book to collectors (a must!) and to anybody that is interested in the history of advertising.

4 comments about Official Price Guide to Role Playing Games.

  1. Price guides come in two types. The first type are ones that are well researched and reflect real world prices/values as determined to the best of the authors' ability such as the Overstreet Comics Price Guide. This one is in the second category, those that function solely to help dealers convince people unloading their collections that whatever they have is not worth much and that the dealer would be 'doing them a favor' by taking the material off of their hands. While 90%+ of RPG material sells for cover price or less in Near Mint+ condition, there are some very valuable items which this book does not address or otherwise undervalues the items (at 1998 prices even).

This book also fails as a comprehensive reference book for several reasons. One, it dates from 1998, so it's not reflective of modern materials. Two, it is incomplete for many second tier publishers. Three, magazines are some of the most collectible items, and quite a diverse field - yet, this guide is woefully deficient at covering them. Four, publisher product numbers are absent - particularly strange since all lists done of the main line of RPG collectibles, TSR products, include the publisher's product code number. Five, index and table of contents are very weak and inadequate for what information is in there.

Avoid this book except for a very cheap clearance priced copy as the internet can, in most cases, provides better lists of published RPG items. The prices in this book do not reflect real world sales.

  2. As an RPG collector, I've been looking for a good desk reference (I live & breathe the Internet as a reference tool, but sometimes it's nice to have an old-fashioned book...).

This particular book is part of the Official series (They have many useful books of the type for collectibles: Coins, stamps, sports cards, etc.) and written by RPG veteran Timothy Brown. On the surface, it shows much promise. With a 1998 copyright date, this includes most RPGs up to the dawn of the D20 rules.

On the plus side, it is well-organized with games listed alphabetically by game system. Brown also does a good job telling what components belong to a particular game accessory (ex. Is this module supposed to come with a poster map?). Cover price, year of release, authors, companies, and occasionally a very brief description are included.

Unfortunately, Brown neglects to include product numbers (ex. TSR 9143), making RPG research more time-consuming. This flaw is shared by the otherwise superior "Heroic Worlds" (ISBN 0879756527 HC; 0879756535 PB). Of course, the values given for the RPGs are completely obsolete given the rise of eBay since the book's publication.

    Summary: Useful, but not necessary.

  3. Do not be fooled by the words "price guide". The books fails profusely in that department. It can be used as a list of role-playing games, but there are plenty of those, most of them are better than this. Try to avoid this books if possible. I see no reason to buy it.

  4. This book purports to be a price guide, but it is a mystery as to where the authors pulled out the prices for the products listed. The prices are way off from what items have sold for at any conventions I have attended or others have attended, on usenet marketplace newsgroups or on ebay. I can only conclude that the authors picked out the prices at random. The only redeeming point of the book is the listing of RPG material published. But since this book's title states that it is supposed to be an official (according to whom?) price guide, and that this was the primary reason for its publishing, I conclude that this book is a total failure as a price guide that will serve no purpose for the purchaser of old RPG material. In short, this book should be avoided at all costs except for use as kindling material.

5 comments about Harry Potter Collector's Value Guide.

  1. The amount and variety of Harry Potter merchandise never ceases to amaze me. Rather than collect much of it, just buy this book. The pictures are detailed and printed on high-quality paper. Want to see what some foreign editions look like? It's in here. Want to find out some basic info about J.K. Rowling? It's in here, too.

Sure it resembles a catalog, but what book of collectibles doesn't? Its biggest flaw is being out of date, thereby leaving out quite of bit of recent merchandise, but it's a good start. The focus is on items based on the books, not the movies, which is okay by me. I'm late to HP fandom, so I get to see what I missed out on.

I also had the advantage of seeing this book in a store, so I knew what I was getting. It would be nice if there were an updated second edition, as this one only scratches the surface of HP collecting.

  2. The book definitely has an entertaining value, but as far as a book for collectors, it isn't up to par. Most of the sections on Harry Potter collectables are not up to date, and they feature very vague values or prices. I think the reason is that Harry Potter merchandise is fairly new, and so it is hard to calculate an item's worth when it just came on to the market.

The book also includes several interesting sections on the upcoming movie, JK Rowling, and England, which are mildly entertaining. The thing that I thought was the most appealing in the book, however, was a section on Harry Potter around the world. I found it very interesting to see the covers of the Harry Potter books in Germany, France, Japan, and many other countries. Out of everything, I would say that that section helps redeem this book, which is otherwise a failure.

  3. this "book" is the worst book i have ever read. the reason is because the "author" is putting 101 advertizements for harry potter mechandise. i reapeat myself, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

  4. My previous review of this product was removed by Amazon after receiving 54 of 58 "helpful" votes, with the remark by the editor to me that "It is not clear from reading the review that you have read the book you commented on." I don't see how so many of Amazon's potential customers could disagree, and I assure you all that I have indeed read this "book" and that my comments below are thus informed.

To even consider that this is a "book" is misleading. It is much more of a magazine format, and although it does contain some articles, they are obviously filler for what is otherwise an advertisement for Harry Potter merchandise, of which this book is one. The articles contain nothing that is not readily available elsewhere--much of it available on the net for free. This book seeks not to inform or entertain, but to part you from your hard-earned dollars with the least amount of effort on the publishers. If the "book" were half the price or less it might be a reasonable value. But since the Collector's Value Guide is as expensive as it is, beware of the information included--obviously the "authors" have no true sense of worth.

Were this truly a Collector's Value Guide, there would be some discussion of value, and what value might actually mean when the market is flooded with cheap garbage like pieces of colored plastic that are supposed to be "magical stones" whose real purpose is to enrich their makers, not entertain children. But of course, no such discussion exists. Granted, not every Potter "collectable" is a monstrosity, but how terribly unfortunate that the real value of Harry Potter, the delight of a child, has been eclipsed by the soulless and almightly dollar. The Harry Potter phenomenon is amazing, and I'm delighted to see so many kids interested in reading, and engaged in the worlds of fantasy and imagination, but this "book" is not about that at all. Instead, the "writers" of this "book" have managed to make a "collectable" from a "book" about "collectables." Clearly the world is not the way I'd have it...

  5. I liked the books that CheckerBee Publishing have done in the past like beanie babies, but this book did not have the information I expected. I would not waste my money on this, unless you want to keep track of everything you have bought, but it is not even current....
