3 comments about The Unauthorized Guide to Collecting Sohio: "Bring Your Card Up to Standard".

  1. The book looks very promising at first glance. You get a 4 page history (nothing here). Chapter two is 50 pages of oil cans , moth spray and home drip oil cans dated through 1989. Mainly 20/30 buck stuff.(moth balls and parrifin,WOW).After pages of Maps, credit cards, calenders, salt & pepper shakers and ice scrapers, now the meat.Pumps and globes.I was ready.18 common globes pictured, I can accept that. Two whole gas pumps pictured.(50's Tokheim, wow).A small globe list.1/3 page(no pics). Then 70 pages of signs, patches, uniforms, toys. No mention of years of pumps built specifically for Sohio, the hundreds of offshute globes used. Islander lights, air machines, the stuff you drove up to are not to be found here. All the unique to Sohio station things in the 30's,40's,50's. Not pictured here.If your looking for that memory of pulling into an old "modern" Sohio, this book is a blackhole. Great icing, NO CAKE!

  2. Excellent source of history and information. I just ordered the new book by the same author and have heard nothing but good reviews. (COLLECTING OIL CANS)

  3. This is an excellent guide to all of the Sohio memoribilia. Anyone who enjoys perusing antique stores for petroliana will enjoy this book -- especially since it is the first of its kind for Sohio merchandise!

2 comments about Camel Cigarette Collectibles: The Early Years : 1913-1963 (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I'm generally thought of with a magnifying glass in one hand, and the bowl of a pipe in the other, but truth be told I've been a cigarette man most of my life, and since discovering Camel cigarettes in the 40s, they are my preferred brand. I was always quite fond of the illustration that adorned the package of the original non-filtered Camel cigarette, and at one time collected the empty packs until a doctor friend of mine told me that my smoking habit was bad enough without adding another addiction to the mix.

This fine book, "Camel Cigarette Collectibles: The Early Years: 1913-1963" should bring back warm memories for all those who would walk a mile for a Camel if only their failing lungs would let them. I still smoke 'em, enjoy 'em, too, but people lacking my sturdy, nay, indestructible constitution, are advised to heed the advice on the package and quit. Now that you can read about Camel cigarettes, that's almost as good as smoking them.

Sherlock Holmes (yes, the one and only)

  2. Camel is one of the most famous trademarks of all time, and in this book you will get a chance to see some of the funny things, that the RJR-people have made to promote the cigarette.

2 comments about Remember When: A Nostalgic Trip Through the Consumer Era.

  1. The author takes us on a delightful trip through the consumer age with its roots in the Victorian era, when mass production first began. Since then, fashionable clothes, cosmetics, books, music and other good things have become available to the general public. The higher standard of living also went hand in hand with increased literacy and greater freedom for women.

This engaging book explores the 20th century decade by decade, looking at aspects of daily life like food, shopping, fashion, entertainment, travel, toys and games through the packaging material, advertising and products themselves. Important events like the World Wars, the coronations, the first man on the moon and the impact of radio and TV are also covered.

Opie's wonderful collection of original items includes comic books, records, newspapers, posters, magazines and various types of souvenir. These objects and images relive history as people remember it, bringing to life again the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of the 20th century.

The book contains an introduction under the headings The Robert Opie Collection, Understanding Our Past, Memories and Our Consumer Society. This is followed by separate chapters on The Victorians and The Edwardians. From there, the chapters follow the decades from The 1910's to The 1990's. The book concludes with an index.

Remember When will appeal to all readers with a fondness for the past, from historians to graphic designers, music, movie and art lovers to those just into nostalgia for the sake of it.

  2. I first set eyes on this gem of a book at my neighbours beach house whilst we were relaxing with a glass of red, and was entranced from the moment I picked it up. I am an avid collector of memorabilia and found this book to be excellent. I can identify with many of the items that were shown as being popular throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's. I regret that so much of what I had has long ago perished in rubbish dumps, and some of the items are so rare and collectable now. I found thememorablia from the 60's and earlier the most exciting, and loved reading about and looking at items that I hunt for in antique shops and markets! This nostalgic book is very hard, if not impossible, to put down once you start flicking through the pages, and is an absolutely essential purchase for anyone that has an interest in or is a collector of memorabilia. I cannot wait to order my copy!

3 comments about The Art of Barbie.

  1. I have collected Barbies for many years and received this book as a gift. I thought it was wonderfully interesting to see many different artists' interpretation of Barbie and her influence on society. I haven't looked at the book for a few years, and I can still picture some of the images - Barbie swimming in French Fries (a play on American diet vs. Barbie's slim figure?) and many dolls watching a huge Barbie face on a movie screen (Is Barbie taking over the world? Should we be on the lookout for Big Barbie?). Overall, I agree that this is a fun coffee table book that would stimulate a lot of interesting conversation.

  2. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) reading this book. The pictures are great and often amusing. This would be a great coffee table book.

  3. As a lifelong Barbie fan, I must say- I love this book. It has something for everyone and you'll see something new every time you pick it up. This book is a must have for Barbie Collectors!

1 comments about Radio & TV Premiums: A Guide to the History and Value of Radio and TV Premiums.

  1. There are more comprehensive books on premiums, but I doubt there are more nostalgic. This might be considered a more focused update of "Jim Harmon's Nostalgia Catalogue," by the same author. The book addresses the shows, in alphabetical order (with cross-references to shows with title changes)twice: once for show descriptions; then to list premiums. Included are show-related premiums from other media (comic books) and stores.

The author makes two points: the book doesn't attempt to be all-encompassing. As the author puts it, "Reading this book will tell you something about the value of premiums, but certainly not everything." He also warns of counterfeits and confusion of items ("...some real items may be misrepresented to be something else.")

Many of the illustrations are monochrome, but there is a section of color photos, too. This is a good complement to other radio-premium books.
