2 comments about A Trekker's Guide to Collectibles With Values (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. This is a perfect look back over the decades of Star Trek collectibles and toys. It is well organized. Fans of only one series may go directly there and concentrate on those items. General Trekkers will enjoy browsing throughout. It is amazing how many items are listed. It is hard to believe a book would be misjudged on the basis of one small line of items so far on the edge of the field! Get this book!

  2. There are many collectibles listed in this book. Also there are good pictures and descriptions. However, some of the best Star Trek collectibles and memorabilia are the Star Trek Autographed Plaques/Items done by "THE SCORE BOARD, INC.", but unfortunately in this book there are not informations about them.

1 comments about The Animated Film Collector's Guide: Worldwide Sources for Cartoons on Videotape and Laserdisc.

  1. This book is essential for any animation fan or scholar. It contains cross-referenced information which cannot be found anywhere else. In the week that I have owned it, I have used it at least ten times to find information I need. Now if only I had the budget to buy all of the animated films listed in the book! If you have any interest in animation at all, buy this book and become an expert!

1 comments about Pen, Ink, & Evidence: A Study of Writing and Writing Materials for the Penman, Collector, and Document Detective.

  1. PEN, INK, & EVIDENCE is a good companion volume to Nickell's DETECTING FORGERY: FORENSIC INVESTIGATION OF DOCUMENTS. Like that work, it is apparently targeted towards the beginner (me) and NOT the practicing professional. For example, when an analysis technique is mentioned (and not all techniques are covered) Nickell tends not to go into elaborate detail on the actual practices. The chapter notes serve as a bibliography and are valuable leaping off points for more indepth research and understanding.

This book is divided into five major sections: (I) Writing Instruments, (II) Ink, (III) Paper, (IV) Writing, and (V) Examining Documents. There are three appendices covering (1) Eighteenth Century Scripts, (2) Chronology of Writing and Writing Materials, and (3) Laboratory Identification of Pens, Inks, & Papers.

Nickell has access to a huge array of relevant materials which are profusely included in black and white photographs throughout the book. The photographs are of fair quality and I assume that higher quality photos would result in higher price (duh).

Overall, I found it interesting, useful, and satisfyingly broad in subject coverage. Nickell's writing style is accessible and clear. The ubiquitous use of anecdotes is essential and entertaining. E.g., "Of course, one approach to duplicating security watermarks -- like those placed in prescription blanks for alchohol during Prohibition ... -- was simply to dupe a legitimate paper company intor producing paper bearing watermarks." -pg 85. I want to know more about alcohol prescriptions during Prohibition!

1 comments about 20th Century Rock & Roll-Women in Rock (20th Century Rock and Roll).

  1. I'm a freelance music journalist who does a lot of writing about women in rock. This book scores very highly with me based on range, subject, and knowledge of the individuals covered.

The author divides the book into a section devoted to the 50 women who have defined rock and roll, with a short essay on each, and a recommended discography. I like the selection much better than some books (including the truly disappointing Rolling Stone Book of Women in Rock). He doesn't include ALL the artists I consider essential, but that's a personal matter. I think he did a very good job, with a range from the obvious choices like Joan Jett and Tina Turner to more obscure but important artists like Lita Ford and Suzi Quatro.

He includes several appendixes with info on all-girl bands, all-girl groups (singers as opposed to instrumentalists) and spotlights on frontwomen of renown, ranging from superstars like Stevie Nicks to the cult heroines like Christina Amphlett and Doro Pesch.

This is a book to give people who don't know much about the subject, or to throw at people who say "women can't rock."

It's not a historical survey (though the author recommends several books, including the one I think of as the definitive volume, Gillian G. Gaar's "She's a Rebel"), but it's a very good basic reference volume.

5 comments about The Illustrated Collector's Guide to Led Zeppelin (Volume II).

  1. This is a book devoted entirely to the collecting of Led Zeppelin non-commercially available recordings (Yes, the infamous bootleg of lore!) and that's pretty much it. Well researched, but listing only CD bootlegs and no vinyl recordings, this is a book for the hardcore Zeppelin collector only. My copy featured a CD that had a interesting interview with the group's guitarist, Jimmy Page, I'd never heard and my being a hardcore collector and fan I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

  2. Having collected Godwin's books since 1984 I can say that this one was as good as any other. Some reviewers have noticed it doesn't have everything in it. That's because it is VOLUME 2! The rest of the stuff out there was in VOLUME 1. Also this book was published in 1998 and obviously doesn't include the hundreds of new titles that have come out since then. Godwin has never reviewed the performances since his first book. He has always said that his opinion on the band was irrelevent. I would much rather have an objective opinion about the recordings than Rey's tantrums about whether Jimmy was good or not. It is also the only book with pictures of all of those bootlegs. When Godwin's first book came out it helped me avoid buying crap boots. It has been doing that ever since.

  3. I cannot recommend this book. I'm an avid collector of Zep shows, and was amazed at the falsehoods printed in this book. This is also not a complete guide. I found myself looking in this book for several widely available boots that are either not listed, or lists tracks or other info incorrectly. If you're interested in reading more about Zep in concert and live tapes, get Luis Rey's Led Zeppelin Live.

  4. Mr Godwin takes his book one step further, and enhances it with the medium of CDROM. Its so much fun exploring this CD, because you never seem to get to the end! There is always something new to look at! If you are a collector of Led Zep live CDs, then this book is also very indespensable in terms of guiding you on what is what. This CDROM can keep you from wasting your money on something that you don't want. Plus, Mr Godwin includes LP records in this version, which wasn't in the previous printed version. Recommended! A++++

  5. This book is the bible of live Led Zep CDs. Using this book, you will save many dollars and hours when you collect and buy Led Zep recordings. If it saves you from buying ONE bad CD, then this book has paid for itself! Buy it!

1 comments about Elsie (R) the Cow & Borden's (R) Collectibles: An Unauthorized Handbook and Price Guide.

  1. My parents both worked for Borden's for many years. So Elsie and the rest of her family were a real part of my upbringing. This book brought back a ton of good memories. I bought it as a Christmas gift for my Dad, and he loved it. The photos and paper quality are really top notch, the collection very complete. There were things shown that even my folks didn't know existed. As kids, my brother and I use to play with, and eventually destroy, a lot of the items featured, not knowing at the time what treasures we had in our hands. Oh, to go back and retrieve those items. If you loved Elsie you'll love this book.

1 comments about Affordable Art Deco: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. This is a fun little book. It's being little is my only complaint. For the price I would like to have had a bit more. However, it does have a lot of color photos nicely reproduced so you can really see the designs.

It has a nice mix of furniture, accessories and even appliances from that period. Books that showcase museum pieces are nice to look at but "Affordable Art Deco" is for the rest of us -- those who want to create a Deco look in our homes. The authors give an idea of what things should cost, which is very helpful. For instance, two lighted art glass cigarette stands should run $75-$150, depending on condition. I've seen the same stands at an antique store priced at $400. I thought that excessive but now I have backup.

I certainly don't regret purchasing "Affordable Art Deco" and would recommend it to anyone out there shopping for the real deal, e.g.; Not just looking at it in a museum.
