  1. Very nice 224 page book with about 40 very large, full color, sharp photos and 750 large black and white photos. A brand new reference, published in 2000. Features a very complete table of contents with more than 200 entries. Topics cover from Addams Family, Banana Splits, Beetlejuice and Casper, to Scooby-Doo, Shari Lewis, Thunderbirds, and Underdog. Background information is provided for each topic and prices are up-to-date. A great reference for this topic.

4 comments about Official Price Guide to Role Playing Games.

  1. Price guides come in two types. The first type are ones that are well researched and reflect real world prices/values as determined to the best of the authors' ability such as the Overstreet Comics Price Guide. This one is in the second category, those that function solely to help dealers convince people unloading their collections that whatever they have is not worth much and that the dealer would be 'doing them a favor' by taking the material off of their hands. While 90%+ of RPG material sells for cover price or less in Near Mint+ condition, there are some very valuable items which this book does not address or otherwise undervalues the items (at 1998 prices even).

This book also fails as a comprehensive reference book for several reasons. One, it dates from 1998, so it's not reflective of modern materials. Two, it is incomplete for many second tier publishers. Three, magazines are some of the most collectible items, and quite a diverse field - yet, this guide is woefully deficient at covering them. Four, publisher product numbers are absent - particularly strange since all lists done of the main line of RPG collectibles, TSR products, include the publisher's product code number. Five, index and table of contents are very weak and inadequate for what information is in there.

Avoid this book except for a very cheap clearance priced copy as the internet can, in most cases, provides better lists of published RPG items. The prices in this book do not reflect real world sales.

  2. As an RPG collector, I've been looking for a good desk reference (I live & breathe the Internet as a reference tool, but sometimes it's nice to have an old-fashioned book...).

This particular book is part of the Official series (They have many useful books of the type for collectibles: Coins, stamps, sports cards, etc.) and written by RPG veteran Timothy Brown. On the surface, it shows much promise. With a 1998 copyright date, this includes most RPGs up to the dawn of the D20 rules.

On the plus side, it is well-organized with games listed alphabetically by game system. Brown also does a good job telling what components belong to a particular game accessory (ex. Is this module supposed to come with a poster map?). Cover price, year of release, authors, companies, and occasionally a very brief description are included.

Unfortunately, Brown neglects to include product numbers (ex. TSR 9143), making RPG research more time-consuming. This flaw is shared by the otherwise superior "Heroic Worlds" (ISBN 0879756527 HC; 0879756535 PB). Of course, the values given for the RPGs are completely obsolete given the rise of eBay since the book's publication.

    Summary: Useful, but not necessary.

    Wayne Gralian
    Wayne's World of Books

  3. Do not be fooled by the words "price guide". The books fails profusely in that department. It can be used as a list of role-playing games, but there are plenty of those, most of them are better than this. Try to avoid this books if possible. I see no reason to buy it.

  4. This book purports to be a price guide, but it is a mystery as to where the authors pulled out the prices for the products listed. The prices are way off from what items have sold for at any conventions I have attended or others have attended, on usenet marketplace newsgroups or on ebay. I can only conclude that the authors picked out the prices at random. The only redeeming point of the book is the listing of RPG material published. But since this book's title states that it is supposed to be an official (according to whom?) price guide, and that this was the primary reason for its publishing, I conclude that this book is a total failure as a price guide that will serve no purpose for the purchaser of old RPG material. In short, this book should be avoided at all costs except for use as kindling material.

5 comments about The Ultimate Roy Rogers Collection: Identification & Price Guide.

  1. THIS IS A KEEPER... great price guide. Better yet a great read

  2. This book definately lives up to its name, "The Ultimate Roy Rogers Collection" and is an absolute "must have" for all collectors of Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gabby Hayes, Trigger & Bullet memorabilia.

208 pages of rare and vintage collectables, more than 1,000 color photos, item descriptions and pricing information as well as a special interview with Dusty, Roy & Dale's son.

Ron Lenius displays exceptional overall quality and first class presentation throughout this book.

Happy Trails, Ron Lenius, and Thank You.

  3. Exceptional job from cover to cover. A great tribute to the Legend of Roy, Dale, Trigger, Gabby, Pat, Bullet and the legacy that they left us. From Chapter 1 to 21, through the 1,000 plus colored photos of incredible memorabilia, it is unquestionably the best of the best Roy Rogers collector guides published. Thanks, Ron Lenius, for your tremendous effort and wonderful contribution. Happy Trails.

  4. Hey I think your book absolutly rocks!
I loved looking at all the interesting old things that were around when my mom was younger. All the colorful pages, and pictures really grabbed my attention while looking through the book. I loved seeing all the different prices for all the different items you have in your book. It really makes me see that old things really do have value. Even if you don't know much about Roy Rogers, this book takes you through his life so that you will have a better understanding of him and who he was.
I'm 13 so I don't really like to take the time to look through a book and read it from cover to cover. But this book really interested me with it's humor, pictures, facts, and stories.
If you are at all interested in learning, studying, or collecting Roy Roger things I strongly suggest that you read through this book. It will greatly help you to know what Roy Roger things are valuable.
    *Kristel*

  5. Brand new, year 2001, 208 page book with more than 1,000 full color sharp photos. Current values are shown. This book includes plenty of information and photos regarding Roy Rogers, Dale Evens, Gabby Hayes, Trigger, and Bullet. There is a lot of informative text, and item descriptions are very good. An interview with Roy Rogers Jr. is included, and chapters on advertising and premiums, autographs, badges, buttons, jewelry, books, clocks and watches, club memorabilia, magazines, toys, displays, and much, much more. A delightful, useful book, highly recommended.

4 comments about Barbie: Four Decades of Fashion, Fantasy, and Fun.

  1. my sister is 9 or 10 or something. its hers. i hope she liked it

  2. This book is very good,really... I learned how to recognize Barbie head molds by period, learnd about the world's fashion history in the ultimate forty years and became much more a Barbie lover than before I knew this book...

  3. THE BOOK HAD SOLID INFORMATION, WAS SUPPORTED. IT HAD GREAT PICTURES. I ALSO WANTED TO SAY THAT THE BOOK HELP ME LEARN MORE ABOUT BARBIE!

  4. Since an Italian writer, he revolves a little more around the Italian part of Barbie (i.e., the fasions, models from Italy, excerts from Italian magazines, etc.) but he does go through a lot of the very famous styles that made Barbie "Barbie" like Enchanted evening, Solo in the Spotlight, Busygal, etc. There is also a 4 page visual on the steps in making a Barbie which I thought was pretty neat. He also shows about 16 of the around the world barbies. And lots of special edition ones too. A very good book; anyone who wants to know about the "special" barbies should get this book

1 comments about Barbie Doll Exclusively for Timeless Creations: Identification & Values : Book 3 (Barbie Exclusives).

  1. This book by Margo Rana is fun and informative. The pictures are very detailed, bright and well done, making the reader feel like they own each doll. I got my book over a year ago for $25. I missed out on this great deal, but I hope that others won't. Margo Rana really explains the dolls in full detail, but they are in her own words. She marks pricing well, so when you go to a doll show or are shopping for dolls, you know what is a good deal and what isn't. When Margo talked about the Pink Splendor doll, the last doll she talked about, she commented to the reader about the $900 listing price on the doll. She said, "Be kind when judging this doll; it's not her fault she is so expensive." This book is extremely fun to look at. I seem to find something new and special about each doll every time I read it. I hope that you will buy this book and enjoy as much as I did. Even as a young collector (I'm 13) I find this book a great blessing.

4 comments about World War II Homefront Collectibles: Price & Identification Guide.

  1. Jacobs must be given credit for producing the very first priceguide on homefront collecting. And Jacobs has assembled photographs of some fairly uncommon items from his pool of experienced contributors. But thats where the kudos end. It is mostly all B&W with just a few color. The organization makes it almost impossible to identify an item that does not have a picture. He lists two different prices for the same item on different pages. His coverage of the homefront area is poor. He wastes several pages on listing gum cards while completely failing in the areas like anti-axis where covers, cinderellas and postcards are just about all that is listed missing ceramics, toys etc in that subcategory. He has a slug of jewelry photos that someone obviously spent a great deal of time shooting but they are all in B&W completely subduing that contribution. And his prices are plain and simply not credible especially when compared to his V For Victory book which has many of the same items but radically different prices without explanation. Overall I'd say buy it just for the pics but throw out the price guide part. Its a woefully error ridden text. An obvious rush job. I give it two stars for being the first.

  2. World War II Homefront Collectibles: Price & Identification Guide presents more than 2,000 items known in antique collector circles as "homefront collectibles" originally produced in the United States to bolster civilian moral during the years of World War II. Profusely illustrated with 600 photos (including a section of full-color photography), World War II Homefront Collectibles is a unique, invaluable aid and guide for both beginner and experienced collectors and dealers. From jewelry, postcards, movie posters, and matchbooks, to toys, games, trading cards, and anti-Axis memorabilia, this definitive, authoritative, reliable, highly recommended guide is an essential addition to any personal, professional, or community library antiques/collectibles reference book collection. Send for the free Krause Publications catalog for a complete listing of fine antique/collectible price guide titles.

  3. Tom Brokav said it all in his best selling novel, The Greatest Generation: "The World War II Victory era from 1941-1945 will undoubtably be forever known as the 'Greatest Generation' in America history! My book is a visual journey into the most humerous, often outlandish, and fascinating World War II collectibles ever assembled.206 pages.Over 2000 listings, 600 wonderful detailed photos, chapter biographies, with a price and identification guide for each collectible. Chapters include: V for Victory, Remember Pearl Harbor, Patriotics, Civilian Defense, Anti-Axis, and Wartime Kids. Homefront hobbyists as well as collectors of Americana will treasure this book.

  4. Great, new 208 page volume with over 600 black and white and more than 60 full color photos. Covers homefront items ranging from: arcade pin-up postcards, greeting cards, matchbooks and POW, to stationery, comics, gum cards and toys. Numerous paper items are shown. Each major chapter includes an interesting and informative introduction to the topic. Values are provided. An outstanding compilation of a variety of collectibles, providing insight into life in the U.S. during WWII that will be of interest to people of all ages.

4 comments about Restaurant China : Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware (Volume 1).

  1. I was very disappointed in this book. The colors in the photographs are beautiful. But as a reference for china patterns, it is seriously lacking. Except for a select few companies, the author seems to offer only one example rather than a more complete listing of the different china patterns used by each company over the years. There are some very nice photographs of railroad dining cars, steamship dining rooms, and airline meals being served, but again as a reference, the pictures do not show the china in these photos very clearly at all. In addition, the listings and descriptions of company logos as well as time-frames for china patterns are sometimes inaccurate and other times incomplete. As always, price guides become outdated quickly and would have been better in a separate addendum instead of being placed with text and captions throughout the book. I feel the book was too generalized. As a new collector I wanted help in identifying the different china patterns used by these transportation companies, when each pattern was used, and who manufactured them. All this book provided were scattered bits and pieces of that information. I do not intend to buy Volume II.

  2. I was referred to this book for price and identification and was sadly disappointed to get the book and look up the china I had to find that it had some of the pieces and history but by NO MEANS is a complete guide. The China Company I had was in there but it didn't have the history from the year the company started but it did have the identification stamps from the year the company started go figure. The price guide consisted of showing a few pictures of china this particular company producted and gave a few prices. I couldn't believe it. The only reason I kept this book is because I was so busy I didn't get to return it before the 30 day return was over. Oh well I'll know better next time.

  3. Barbara Conroy shares her extensive personal experience as a collector in this invaluable reference work. The photography is exceptional, with hundreds of examples of dinnerware pictured in each of the four main categories, along with copies of period advertisements and brochures. Each section also includes a painstakingly assembled collection of hundreds of logos to assist the collector in identifying the company the dinnerware was produced for. A must-have reference book for the serious restaurant, airline, ship and railroad china collector! Pair this book up with Volume 2 of the series and you can push all your other books to the back of the shelf, you won't need them anymore.

  4. Barbara Conroy's new volume on restaurant china is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature regarding this largely American genre of utilitarian ceramic art.

Restaurant china represents an age of americana where restuarants cared enough to invest capital in individualized ceramic pieces that would advertise and represent their establishments. It is a practice that is being undertaken with less and less frequency in our time. Many manufacturers are no longer in business. It is accordingly a genre of increasing interest to collectors.

Conroy's book chronicles this fine craft form well. It offers a fairly exhaustive listing of topmarks and backstamps of interest to collectors. Substantial full-color illustrations are both informative and entertaining. Historical information as well as primer material about production processes are welcome inclusions.

The book's title is a bit midsleading, however. It is really a volume focusing primarily on airline, ship, and railroad china... with some coverage of military, western, government, oriental, sports-related, casino, department store and corporate pieces. Logo china manufactured for restaurants and diners receives is afforded little coverage. And non-logo pieces in stock patterns receive virtually no mention at all; the topic is beyond the scope of the book (though Conroy plans, I believe, additional volumes which may address these areas in further detail.)

Future volumes may benfit from incuding information on how to read backstamps to determine date of manufacture, information on stock patterns, and changes in ceramic form and decorative practices from the 1950's and 60's to the present day.

No one volume, however, can be expected to exhaustively cover all facets of this increasingly valued utilitarian art form. On the whole, Conroy's volume enriches the literature currently available to growing number of restaurant china fans and collectors in our culture.

  1. This book had all black and white pictures, and almost all of them showed the item in its package. I needed a book to help me IDENTIFY individual figures, which this book DEFINATELY DID NOT DO. I immediately returned the book.

  2. This was a very informative book. I liked the fact it went back a while to older figures I am missing, as well as all the hints and thips along the way. Kudos to Amazon for featuring this book!!

4 comments about Television's Cowboys, Gunfighters and Their Cap Pistols.

  1. I SAW THIS BOOK ADVERTISED IN ANOTHER PISTOL BOOK I HAVE. IT IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! BETTER THAN ADVERTISED

  2. This is not just a book about toy cap pistols, it is a time machine. Not only does Mr. D'angelo present the cap pistols of our youth but he reveals the actors who played the part on television. A fact filled, exhaustive research of a love he shares with us. I had forgotten many of the toys he describes. Each page brought back memories of a childhood where honor and truth was the spoken word of the cowboy. So fans of the 50's and 60's westerns, return to those thrilling days of yesteryear when all boys wore their six shooters with pride and rode into the sunset.....

  3. A masterpiece of research and delivery. This is a book I keep out and enjoy referring to every time I watch a western on TV. The unexpected benefit from this book occurs when friends notice it on the table. I thought I knew everything about people I have known for years, but this book starts conversations into childhood favorites that are truly enlightening and very enjoyable. A must have for anyone who has every watched a TV western of owned a cap gun.

  4. MR. D'ANGELO HAS BROUGHT A WEALTH OF PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE AND WARMTH ON THE SUBJECT INTO HIS WRITING; HE HAS COMPLETELY AND EXHAUSTIVELY RESEARCHED THE BACKGROUNDS OF ALL OF THE CHARACTERS AND THE WEAPONS, AND DISCUSSES THEM WITH OPEN FAMILIARITY. FOR THOSE RAISED DURING THE 50'S AND 60'S, THIS IS A TRIP DOWN TV AND THE MOVIES'S MEMORY LANE. THIS BOOK IS OBVIOUSLY A LABOR OF LOVE, AND IT TRULY SHOWS. A GREAT ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTOR'S LIBRARY, AND GREAT FOR THE NOSTALGIA BUFFS!

  1. This beautiful, completely revised, latest edition, 296 page volume has colorful, laminated hard covers. There are over 1,300 full color, sharp, large photos of very type of TV toy and memorabilia. If you were around in the 60's or 70's or enjoyed re-runs of some of these shows you'll really enjoy using and owning this book. Having the book is almost as good as owning the items! It includes shows from Beverly Hillbillies to Fantasy Island, to Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Partridge Family, Patty Duke, Welcome Back Kotter and Saturday morning shows. Estimated values are shown. Very, very nice book.

  2. Tv Toys is the all time greatest book ever written for toy collectors. I haven't found anything that even begins to compare to this book. I wish that Mr Davis and Mr. Morgan would write more like it. Great job guys. Thanks
