5 comments about Advertising Photography: A Straightforward Guide to a Complex Industry.

  1. I bought the book. Two, by accident. Started to read it and thought "I know someone who could use this" (besides myself). I loaned the extra copy to a fellow photographer that does a "commercial photo" class at the institution at which I teach "fashion" (subtitled "forget the crap the other teachers taught and have fun).
Anyway, he liked it so much, he is asking that it become the text book for his class! Truly, although I probably wasn't ready for it, I wish this book had been there when I had graduated from College/Assisting...

  2. Lesko relays equal parts insight, humor and experience into what might otherwise be a droll subject. Surprisingly, I found myself glued to the pages and I before I knew it I had learned something too! A great read.

  3. excellent real world knowledge, with a friendly, real world voice. A photographer who knows the business, and is firm in his knowledge- like he should be. Highly recommended.

  4. Not only does Lou walk you through the intricacies of doing business as a commercial photographer, he offers basic insights and meaningful advice any photographer can use. Further, his style of writing makes this a fun and interesting read. A definate thumbs up.

  5. This book is a good book to go through whether or not you are a photographer. The stories that Lou tells are great. They make you laugh but also have a lesson and a point to each one. The photos are beyond amazing and I enjoyed all of them and the lessons they taught as you go through the book. I would recommend this to any reader whether you are an avid photographer or just a point and shot type of person.

5 comments about Very Charleston: A Celebration of History, Culture, and Lowcountry Charm.

  1. Good books with fast service!
    Thanks, Sent right away~

    Thanks,
    Gloria

  2. Well written and hightly entertaining.
This small book captures the remarkable
charm and southern sleekness of this
city. AND the recipes are wonderful.

  3. I've been going to Charleston since I was a small child, and I learned a few things from this fun little book. I bought it for the illustrations- I love maps and "Did you know" kinds of books-and thought this was the perfect marriage of the two. Charleston is so interesting that I think there is more to tell, so I wish it were a little longer.

  4. My daughter had this book with her when we visited Charleston for the 2nd time. After reading it (couldn't put it down), we found more reasons to return to this wonderful area; learned more interesting facts about already viewed streets, homes and history. It is a light read with beautiful watercolor pictures throughout the book. Don't pass it up!

  5. The wonderful watercolor drawings and short descriptions make this book a must have for those people who have been (or will soon go) to Charleston, South Carolina. The spirit and color of Charleston is captured in this small volume. I traveled to Charleston with three other women and we all bought this book! One lady even used it as her trip journal, making comments in the book about places we had been. I bought one for another friend going to Charleston and she, too, loved this little book.

2 comments about Photoshop CS3 for Screen Printers (Wordware Applications Library).

  1. This is a decent book but I think it could have been better. First of all its not in color therefore when working the tutorials it is difficult to see changes. Second the tutorials seem to skip steps which can leavie a newbie like me lost. But the screen priniting info is valuable

  2. I love this book. I have bought other photoshop books, but they are not concentrated on screen printing.
In each chapter it has clear and easy to follow step by step exercises that is accompanied by a CD.
The only downside is, there is not enough simulated process exercises. I hope the author can write a book filled with simulated process exercises, because I surely will buy it.

5 comments about Creative Digital Printmaking: A Photographer's Guide to Professional Desktop Printing (Photography for All Levels: Intermediate).

  1. While searching out another photography book, I stumbled upon this one and bought it on a whim. What a revelation! I am totally thrilled with the book, the authors' writing, and the info - both aesthetic and concrete - inside. I've had several print b/w darkrooms - bathroom affairs that I've loved - but no longer have the space. I really have missed the print-making experience. Thus Creative Digital Printmaking opened new and exciting doors to me. Even better, it clearly explained how to handcolor digiprints, something I'd done with my b/w images, but never imagined I could do with a digital print.
The book's instructions and explanations are masterful - clear and concise, yet full of exciting techniques. While the book takes the reader on interesting creative journeys, Airey also focuses on the concrete, such as how to calibrate a monitor and the best way to scan a negative or photograph. The combination works. So do the excellent photographic examples. If you have the urge to make digital prints that last and ones that resonate with and excite viewers, this book will guide you on your way. I can't recommend it highly enough.

  2. You can spend weeks following web users groups that discuss specific papers, inks, printers and combinations of archival inks and papers etc. You can subscribe to numerous artists' magazines. But in this book, you can save yourself months, because of Theresa Airey's practical information and lists. The book not only helps photographers looking for quality in printing but it also gives people who hand tint photos good advice with the current lineup of digital materials. From the applications standpoint, I like that this book takes readers from basics to difficult, creative projects. The listings for companies, websites, papers and other media are excellent. To Amphoto Books: Please give us more from this talented and extraordinarily helpful author.

  3. BASIC Digital Printmaking -That should be the title of this book. Perhaps for the amateur photographer who is unfamiliar with basic digital processes. There is so much more that can be done, missed completely by this book.
The book is filled with cheezy Photoshop effects equal to those "star" filters back in the 70's. cheezy, cheezy, cheezy...

  4. For those who endeavor to perfect fine art digital printmaking, this is the book to read. It is a "how to" and so much more. The book covers paper, ink, techniques, hand coloring and the practical application and intereaction of all of these variables. The book is cogently written and elegantly displayed. It is a must for anyone's library who wishes to expand their horizons in the digital printing arena. Ms. Airey is a master of her craft and it shows.

4 comments about Hummingbirds of North America: The Photographic Guide.

  1. Awesome book. Received quickly and in perfect condition. Thank you so very much!! Peggy Bender

  3. I'm now able to correctly identiful many species of Hummingbirds. Great source of information. Very detailed book.

  4. This is a very useful book for birders who want to be able to identify hummingbirds in the U.S. It includes photos and accompanying text for every hummingbird that you are likely (or lucky enough) to spot within U.S. borders. The text is particularly good, and the photos are shown large enough to be of use to the beginner/intermediate birdwatcher in addition to the experienced observer.

5 comments about The Photographer's Guide to the Puget Sound & Northwest Washington: Where to Find the Perfect Shots and How to Take Them.

  1. I will be extremely busy this year. I like that the guide concentrates on the "non" typical areas of the Sound. We all know that Mt.Rainier is the bomb. It can have it's own book. This book covers the areas a local would most likely seek out versus a visitor. (ie Bremerton, Poulsbo etc) As a local I'll be spending a lot more time than usual on the Olympic side of the sound this year. Very good detail on times of year, day and lenses types for the various locales. All in all very thorough and for 10 bucks! what a bargain.

  2. For those who live in the Seattle area, this book will be a great guide to some not-so-well-known (as well as some VERY well-known) locations in Western Washington. I've already used it to plan several shoots to locations I never thought of before, and have been delighted with the results.

Now for the caveats: first off, this is for full-time residents of western Washington, not the summer tourist to Seattle. Unless you're visiting for a month or more, have no intention to do anything other that photograph, and have access to your own vehicle, you simply won't have the time to hit more than a handful of the locations listed here. Second, and this is my biggest gripe, while the book covers Puget Sound and the Olympic peninsula, there's only one location listed in the Cascades, and NO coverage whatsoever of Mount Rainier! Considering that this is probably the most spectacular area in all of Washington for nature photography, its omission is a little like a tourist guide to U.S. cities leaving off New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. I wish the author/publisher could have seen fit to expand the volume to include Rainier, as well as other mountain areas such as Stevens Pass and the North Cascades Highway.

  3. As a photographer who has lived in the Puget Sound region for over 40 years I was astounded by the numerous locales detailed by Mr Barbee that I have not(yet)visited. I found his directions and suggestions to be clear and concise and very user friendly. I particularly enjoyed Mr Barbee's unpretentious and conversational style of writing sprinkled with subtle humor.

I am a bit confused by "BookGeeks" negative comments. The purpose of this book is primarily to detail many of the exceptional photographic opportunities in the Puget Sound area. Certainly, for me, that task is well accomplished. In addition, Mr Barbee has included a substantial amount of very useful suggestions regarding the more technical and practical aspects of photography both in general as well as locale specific. I would also disagree regarding the quality of the photography in the book. Admittedly this is not a "picture" book and so does not highlight Mr Barbee's considerable photographic talents and yet I found many of the images to be exceptional and inspirational.

If one is looking for a "how to" book of photography there are many other books out there that will do the task. On the other hand, if one's plans include photography in the Puget Sound area this is the book to get.

  4. I have to respectfully disagree with BookGeek.

Before a two week vacation/photo trip to Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula I bought about 10 books through Amazon. Several had awesome photos (like Art Wolfe's book), but none gave much detail on exactly where a given photo was taken.

That's the purpose of this book, on the other hand. I felt (as I often have in real life) I had met a fellow photographer that was happy to dole out his local experience. My son and I spent several days on the Olympic Peninsula, and because of the book visited several places we otherwise wouldn't have - with great results (Rialto Beach and Sol Jardin for example).

I'm already on experienced photographer, and thus don't really need the input on wide vs telephoto, but I don't see anything wrong with his recommendations.

In summary, I think the book is great, and as an owner of probably 100 photo related books, this one stands out in practicality for what I like to do.

  5. I pre-ordered this book based on the title and description... I should have waited until my local book store had it so I could take a look at it first.

This book is not worth the money. The description is very deceptive. The photos inside are OK and many of the locations covered do not include a sample photo. In addition the sub-title "... and How to Take Them" is deceptive. The How To is limited to things like... wide angle lense, or early in the morning, many of the targets are not even defined let alone some tips on photographing.

For a photography book I give this 0 (zero) stars.
For a picture book with good examples I give it 1 (one) star.
For a book that gives you good locations for taking pictures 3 (three) stars)

Overall this book hardly deserves 1 (one) star, however it does have some content that is interesting.

Sorry for the harsh review but this book is not worth the money or time.

5 comments about It's Complicated: The American Teenager.

  1. This is a dead on compilation of the most misunderstood segment of our population. Photos are honest and terrific. I have shared the book with many people and they are all capitivated.

  2. Although my teenagers are in their 30's now-I read this with much interest. The photography was beautiful and captured the spirit of these people. You could see that they really trusted Robin and her camera. A wonderful idea. A wonderful book for me to share with my children-who have children and for friends who are wondering who their teens really are! Thanks to Robin and Robert and to Umbrage who let them tell and show their story!

  3. I sat down with this book with the intent to peruse, but found myself totally absorbed for the entire evening. The photographs are amazing on their own, but the coupling with interviews opens up the experience - I found myself wishing I had been in that car with Robin as she explored the teen world. Robin has left me with wanting more... I'll be sharing this book with my teenage daughter to offer perspective on her life in this day and age.

  4. This is such an extraordinary collection. The kind to be viewed over and over again in different moods and for different insights. In particular I recommend this collection for libraries and other resource rooms where teenagers roam - my own high school students have been glued to it since it arrived and I love hearing them reflect on what they see. Thank you Ms. Bowman for providing us with this entry into our past, present, and future, and for those young people who are young right now - for giving them insight into their peers - near and far.

  5. My 15 year old received this book as a Christmas present. It has remained out and open since then. All of her friends have picked it up and found entries that they found interesting and compelling. The book truly represents the cross-section of the teen experience in America. The author's compassion and concern for the teens as individuals is evident throughout the profiles, allowing it to speak to the universal truth about making it through those teen years. "It's Complicated" indeed.
