5 comments about The Sacred Heart: An Atlas of the Body Seen Through Invasive Surgery.

  1. A book that had been left behind in a gallery my ex girlfriend was working in, it had been given to me since I love the human body. Quite possibly, as a photographer, some of the best photography I have ever seen. The story is well written, and does not detract from the amazing images that grace the viewer's eyes upon opening the cover. After our break-up, the book still was amazing, and I decided to share it with someone from my gym. I have seen neither recently, and really miss this book as it just grabs your attention and latches on to it like an alligator initiating a death roll. I need to get another copy, I have another to share this with.

  2. I, too heard the NPR interview when this book was released, and he said the most interesting procedure ended up not being in the book because it didn't photograph "well." It was a transurethral prostate resection (performed through a scope inserted into the penis) done on a fully conscious patient under saddle block anesthesia who conversed with him throughout. Dr. (now) Aguilera-Hellweg found that interesting partially because his mother had a saddle block when he was born and he was impressed to see its effect on this man.

Full permission was given by patients or their guardians before publication, and IMO the best (and most graphic) photo was the very last - the AIDS patient whose body was opened for autopsy.

In short, it's a coffee-table book you really wouldn't WANT on your coffee table.

  3. This book covers the topic from an artist's point of view. It is elegant and haunting in its illustration and text. It has affected me profoundly and I'm sure will do the same for all readers.

  4. This book is brave, and very well put-together. The work of photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg, whose shots can also be seen in the yearly calendar issued by Philadelphia's Mutter Museum, is brilliant in its lighting and composition.

The subject, as revealed in the subtitle, is invasive surgery. Those who say the book is exploitative since the photographs are disturbing, probably need a Hallmark Card version of truth, and reality.

Invasive surgery invades the body. There are not photographs of Kate Moss, though it might be of Kate Moss later in life after the effects of her smoking finally rear their ugly head. But the photos in The Sacred Heart really come to terms with the ugliness and contradictory beauty of the human body in its most elemental stage.

The introduction is by Richard Selzer, whose other extremely readable books achieve direct paths to the most curious and disturbing aspects of what is seen by the doctor of medicine.

  5. There is no doubt in my mind that An Atlas of the Human Heart was a labor of love on the part of Max. The photographs are at once the most reverent and irreverant portrayals of the human body that I have ever seen. I will never quite be able to think of my body the same way again. Max's work is ambitious, inspiring, and challenging. The book gives you a glimpse of a truly sacred place -- the inside of the human body.

1 comments about Barns: Styles & Structures.

  1. I was really looking for a book that can give you ideas of how to remodel your barn in different climates. We recently purchased a new home in Oregon and put all of our machinery in the pole barn. Well, the machinery is starting to rust. So I bought a bunch of these "Barn" books thinking that I could find some ideas of how to insulate our barn. No such luck. However, this book is pretty nice.

4 comments about Mexico's Copper Canyon: Barranca del Cobre, Canyon Train Adventure, Sierra Tarhumara.

  1. It was just fine - for what it is. The layout is not so great -- has a sort of mish-mash graphic design. The maps are great -- it is written in both English and Spanish -- so a little hard to follow - but all the parts are there in both languages. It's fine for the price - tho' a bit odd.

  2. This is the only book I could find on the canyon. It gives you a good overview of what to expect before you leave home and is a handy reference for when you get back. There are some photos - many of places you will not see unless you have your own independent mode of transportation.

  3. Fabulous book--great color pictures! A must for every travel library. I am ordering a second book, so I can lend it out to friends!

  4. Whether you plan to take a trip to Mexico's Copper Canyon or not, this book is a wonderful journey into that region. It provides both a fascinating look at the Tarahumara Indians as well as travel tips for the adventurous traveler.

Padre Luis Verplancken, S.J., the co-author of the books, has lived in the Copper Canyon region for more than 20 years. He provides an intimate portrait of the Tarahumara, both in words and pictures. Through Padre Verplancken, we learn about the Tarahumara people, religion, and social structures.

Mr. Fisher has compiled additional information on some of the other interesting places in the region. No trip to the Copper Canyon is complete, for example, without a visit to Batopilas. Or take a trip on the the Chihuahua El Pacifico railroad.

So whether you are an armchair traveller or a hearty hiker, this book is a must.

  2. I read this book with great interest and believe it's an important book. Burson makes the unbelievable believable. It makes sense to be calling these beings "Extra Celestials" as they are like angels, here to help us and change the world for the better. I look forward to connecting with them myself.
