5 comments about Beginner's Guide to Adobe Photoshop.

  1. I really enjoyed this book ,it was easy to follow and I learned alot from it. I had no prior experience with photoshop what so ever, but now I can say that after reading this book I know the basics of the software. Thanks alot Michelle 4 writing a beginner's guide 2 photoshop!!!!

  2. Michelle Perskins' Beginner's Guide To Adobe Photoshop, 3rd Edition provides an excellent basic set of structured lessons to help beginners with photography background enter the digital world of Photoshop editing. Here are foundation lessons on everything from rendering and resolution to file formats and working with image enhancements. Combine these with basics on how to remove dust, dirt and scratches from a picture and you have an excellent primer.

  3. This is a great beginners guide to Adobe Photoshop. The author takes the time to explain all of the important tools in this comprehensive software program. You will certainly gain many valuable insights in how to improve your photographs.

  4. I wanted to get a strong but basic overview of all the features of Photoshop. Based on other reviews I thought this book would be great. The section on filters tells you what filters are available, but doesn't go through the differences between any of them. The theme throughout most of the book is: Play with all of them to see what the differences are and if you make a mistake, there's always the Edit>Undo command. If this is the way you want to learn, don't bother buying the book. I was very disappointed.

  5. Being computer literate but novice in photography I bought the book expecting to be hand-held, as a toddler; It turns out that I am much more of an expert in photography than I expected: All the information presented in this book is absolutely common sense, there is no reason to pay in order to get advice on "what is a tool; what is cropping, etc". What this book is missing is the absolutely first and last steps, and the most important: how do you bring an image into photoshop from your camera and, how do you save an image outside photoshop, after you edited it.
The book deals perfunctorily with the resolution, but not with how to change and save the image after you modify it for emailing, which i think is much more important than dedicating 2 pages to LIQUEFY. In conclusion, this book dedicates way too much time (and paper) to advanced details (and does not explain them sufficiently to be used well) and way too little on the real basic stuff. IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT PHOTOSHOP AND EXPECT TO GET A RUNNING START, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK TO DO IT!

2 comments about New Orleans in Photographs.

  1. I lived there for many years and love it still. This book brought back many memories and, knowing what is there now, much heartbreak.

  2. I was born and raised in and around New Orleans and after Katrina destroyed my hometown, I wanted an album of beautiful photographs to remind me of what once was. I believe New Orleans will rebuild bigger and better, but it will be different. These beautiful photographs capture the New Orleans of my memories. This book is a stunning pictoral of New Orleans beyond what tourists see in the French Quarter and Bourbon St. Along with the photos are a brief history of the city I love. Along with New Orleans in Photographs, I purchased New Orleans by Jan Arrigo/Laura McElroy which I also recommend. They are great coffee table books and you can't beat the price for the value! Laissez le bon temps roulez!

5 comments about Photoshop 7 for Windows & Macintosh (Visual QuickStart Guide).

  1. The book looks brand new and arrived in record time. Thank you so much!

  2. This book, as well an several other Peach Pit Press books, did a great job of immediately losing my interest. The layout doesn't seem to flow from one section to the next. It seems like the author thought of a new topic at random, and dumped that information in the book with no consideration for logical order. In general, it seems that most of the Peach Pit Press books that I've read follow this "shuffling of information" approach.

  3. This book is not for beginners. Very confusing and poorly written.

I don't know if it makes a good reference because I'm new to Photoshop, but I do know one thing, this book does not teach a beginner anything.

    I am taking it back.

  4. OK you're still using PS7 and want to get up to speed.
You want all the technical details and tips and even some background on print design.
You want a couple of exercises and clear examples.
You want to go from beginner to a confident intermediate level.
And you want a shelf reference to PS7.

Note: You also acknowledge PS7 to be the greatest
image editor this side of the milky way(!)

    Get this book.

  5. How can you do a great Photoshop book in black and white? Turns out, you can't. There is a lot of good reference material here, but it doesn't connect very well. And the full color section at the middle of the book that you would expect to have the color versions of some of the examples had artwork from a variety of artists.

I recommend O'Reilly's Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One instead.

2 comments about Lee Friedlander: Self Portrait.

  1. Lee Friedlander is truly a wonderful photographer with fun, witty self portraits as well as more serious and thoughtful self portraits. It encompasses what would seem to be his entire being and should be on every collector's shelf.

  2. I love this book, a collection of unusual self-portrait work by Lee Friedlander. Often he's only shown as a shadow, or reflection. In many cases, his use of his image is a clever and even humorous comment on the other elements within the photograph. Sometimes, you even must hunt for him.. "where's Lee now?". The book feels like a chronicle of his travels. If you're interested in creative self-portrait photography, or a fan of Freiedlander, then I think this book really is a must-have.

The book is some 54 pages long, with a foreward by the artist and an afterward by John Szarkowski. The majority of the book's pages are, of course, photographs, with the opposing pages empty except for the page number, place where the image was taken, and finally the year shot. The print quality of the images is truly wonderful, and the paper itself is nice, thick and crisp. It is a black cloth hardbound book, with a quality matte slipcover.

    Beautiful. Recommended.

1 comments about Madagascar Safari Companion (Safari Companions).

  1. I did not expect much from this book. What was my surprise when I finally have a look at it! Composition of the pictures, lighting, colors and what is very important - quality of the print - is excellent! Photos are taken with all kind of lenses: from macro to telephoto. Commentary provided to each chapter is short but informative enough. If you are planning trip to Madagascar this book could help decide which national parks to visit. There are also some general traveling (what to take, when and where to go) tips.
