5 comments about Photoshop CS2: Essential Skills (Photography Essential Skills).
- This is such an excellent "basic and beyond" book for this Photoshop Program. Only problem is that it needs to be about twice as long. Anytime Mark Galer and/or Philip Andrews authors a book--BUY IT. Their books are always to the point and understandable
- the date of arrival should be make it more clearly coz last time I thought the book will arrive on 21st Aug but it actually comes on 8th Aug it make me feel nervous coz last time I need to use the book quite urgent.
- As an amateur that has spent countless hours slaving over graphics hobbying, I can say this book has extreme value for me. In spite of instances wherein I'll nod my head and babble "yeah, yeah, I know, I know,..." it does present items which I did not know and that have had a direct and positive impact on what I do. Thorough industry gurus may not see any use for it, but the rest of the planet should have a copy and actually read then use the thing. What I appreciate most of all is the attitude. I detest those "Whatever for dummies" books. The methodical and sequential layout utilized by Messrs. Galer & Andrews, however, is the better way to go. If you get no other volume on the subject, at least get this one.
- From a designers perspective, what a great book-looks fabulous. From an instructors point of view, well it can be frustrating to use. The editor didn't catch many ambigous sentences and the editor needs to hire an instructor with strong teaching skills to review and revamp the instructions in this book. For example, if a task requires 5 steps, the book will often only mention 1,2,5. An example of a ambigous sentence: "Duplicate the layer you are working before starting the extraction process as the extraction process removes rather than hides the pixels surplus to requirements". What in the world does "..surplus to requirements" mean?
- If you are new to Photoshop you might want to start off simpler than this book but it is a good book for basic skills. Flip through it at Borders or B & N and see what you think. Clearly written and spell-out tutorials. A Great read and a good buy.

2 comments about Eighteenth-Century French Fashions in Full Color.
- A lovely collection of 64 period fashion plates from Galerie des Modes. The plates cover the years from 1778-1787 and give a good representation of French high fashion in the years leading up to the French Revolution. The plates include court gowns, undress gowns, stays, day ensembles, riding habits, children's frocks and more. Complete with translated descriptions of each outfit and a decent glossary of terms.
Drool-worthy does not begin to describe in the goodies contained within. This lovely and inexpensive resource is a must for anyone interested in late century fashions. Get one for research and one to take apart and frame for your sewing room walls.
- Stella Blum has selected plates of 18th century fashion from the Metropolitan Museum's collection and reproduced them here in full colour.
You certinally don't get all the plates produced in the 18th century but what you get is a helpful and representitive selection. This is one of the few books where you can see actual colour plates all reproduced in a sequence like this. If you have any interest in 18th french fashion this book is both [inexpensive] and invaluable.

1 comments about Western Shirts A Classic American Fashion.
- Western shirts have been around enough decades to become collectible: but what distinguishes brands, makes them collectible, or makes them special? Western Shirts: A Classic American Fashion follows both the history and collectible points of the Western shirt, offering a complete listing of Western shirt labels, covering everyday wear to costume wear, and adding plenty of photos, illustrations, and sidebars of information. A 'must' for any who either collect or love the Western shirt style.

5 comments about Dead in Their Tracks: Crossing America's Desert Borderlands.
- This book was extremely disappointing unless you would like to know how many gallons of water it takes to illegally cross from Mexico into the United States. The author takes a liberal and sympathic view of illegals and tries to sway the reader into thinking that breaking the law is OK for these people. Give me a break. Where is the equal-sided journalism? What about the economic drain to healthcare, gang violence and drugs that these people bring into the United States? If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck then it is a duck. Illegals are illegals are illegals. Don't waste your time on this book.
- -"Photojournalist John Annerino plunges into a world few Americans ever consider, much less confront: a pitiless trek through the southwestern Arizona Desert that can deliver a man to steady work - or to a whimpering death," Laura Brooks, The Arizona Daily Star.
-"Anyone interested in this slaughter should run, not walk, to John Annerino's Dead in Their Tracks," Charles Bowden, author of Down by the River.
-"A passionate chronicle. The story...is gripping and profoundly disturbing," Susan J. Tweit, The Bloomsbury Review.
-"A stunning portrayal of the dangers (including death) faced by immigrants eager to work in the United States," Library Journal.
-"I'm trying to illuminate the lives of those who continue to die in America's killing ground," Annerino said," abcnews.com.
-"A gripping firsthand account of crossing the Camino del Diablo in the company of Mexican nationals...Annerino's evocative words and haunting pictures make the issue impossible to ignore," Donnamarie Barnes, People Magazine.
-"The story is riveting.Annerino's writing is emotional and graphic," Ernesto Portillo, San Diego Union-Tribune.
-"Through cholla cactus and scorpions, along sands simmering at 140-160 degrees, John Annerino and four Mexican companions stumble toward an oasis north of poverty: the American dream," oneworldjournies.com.
-"The book is a testament and a memorial.Thirty pages list the known dead...Annerino deserves praise for putting this story into words and pictures," Will Chaffey, San Antonio Express-News.
-"A gripping work of investigative reporting," Nicole Davis, National Geographic Adventure.
-"Seen on CNN and featured on CNN Bokchat, John Annerino has worked on the border for Newsweek, ABC Primetime, National Geographic Adventure, and America 24/7," KmG
- "A passionate exponent of more human solutions to the problems of illegal border crossings...John Annerino, an Arizona writer-photojournalist, tells the story up close and personal in a gut wrenching, bare knuckle account...His account puts flesh and bones on the story behind the dreams, and skeletons, too," Desert Candle.
- This book is poorly written, _utterly_ disjointed, and has a cloying sentimentality that is really annoying. By that I mean it's not at all analytical: it includes random snippets of poems, etc. that serve only to confound the reader looking for some meat. Plus, there are certain phrases like "cutting sign" that I hadn't the foggiest idea about until I looked it up. Help the reader out here.
Yeah, it's hot as hell in the desert, and it's doggone handy to have water. It sucks that people are dying in the desert and the forces that draw them to _El Norte_ are highly complex and not necessarily their fault. Still, they are breaking the law from the word go, and well they know it, and it seems to me there are worse tragedies involving truly innocent people. Plus, it peeves me to no end that these illegals have largely trashed some of the most beautiful and exotic wildernesses in the U.S. So my sympathy is just not all that deep.
The photos are for the most part of lousy quality as well. Why it took carrying several cameras, as the author claims, to produce these pictures is beyond me.
Lastly the book is VERY short, with a ridiculously long appendix addressing every single death that has occurred in this area ... newsflash: no one is going to read that.
How could the editors have allowed a book like this to go to press? It's absolutely amateurish, despite being driven by sincere emotions.
- There are those who call themselves experts on the subject and those who are. John is the genuine expert. His points on the subject can only be done by being there and doing it. That is John, that is how he is. That is how he lives. A Master photographer, a Father, Journalist. His treatment on the border issue is a no-holds-barred trip into the unknown. He makes it known, he does it masterfully! When I read Dead in Their Tracks I found it to be the best publication on the subject. It should be required reading for those who are studying Hispanic Culture here at the University of Arizona! When one has the folks at ABC News and other News organizations beating on your door for your knowledge on the subject you know it is John Annerino. When you read a John Annerino book or see his imigaes you are guaranteed that you have exposed to the very best in subject treatment. Dead in Their Tracks will take you for a ride you won't soon forget.

5 comments about Burton Holmes Travelogues: The Greatest Traveler of His Time, 1892-1952 (Photo Books).
- What an absolutely amazing book! The photos are simply stunning and painstakingly hand-coloured to bring them to life. The text is taken from Holmes' own writings which, in conjunction with the photos, gives us an insight into life back then all around the world. The things he saw and did are just staggering. This is a wonderful book that will be cherished for many years to come.
- My husband saw this book at another store for a little more money than I found it for on Amazon. So I bought it here. He loves it!
- I bought this book and found out much to my horror that part of the pages are upside down! It also contains hideous typos in major captions such as: RUSSIA: COLSSUS OF THE NORTH. Mistakes such as upside pages and unbelievable typos make one wonder about the value of the text since editing was obviously not an important part of production.
I tried to return this to Amazon but was told that since it was more than a month that I had it, they could NOT give me another book or a full refund on the cost of purchase.
As the saying goes, caveat emptor.
- This book is something you`d tresure and enjoy each time you go through its pages, high quality in every aspect.A book you`d love to browse and comment with your family and friends sipping a cup of tea.
- The world has been spinning extraordinarily fast the past several decades and fewer and fewer have memories of what life was like in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Burton Holmes had a camera and a great desire to share his travel experiences through photos, film and lectures.
Today, they are ours again in this wonderful book that takes us back to times and places that we don't recognize today. He shares the humanity of the past with the humanity of the present and future generations to come.
His journey shows us how life hasn't changed and how drastically it has changed since these photos were taken.
For me, it's very special. I have made it a gift to my family members and to my child. I want it to be seen and read for generations to come.
It helps me get a grip on what's really important on this planet. Sharing without borders.

2 comments about Time: Annual 2007 (Time Annual: the Year in Review).
- It is a great book to review the "major" events of a given year with good text and photos. I give one to each of my grandchildren with a personal note on what I observed about each one for that year.
- I started collecting "Life ~ The Year In Pictures" in 1985 and looked forward to the annual edition. In recent years, I feel the change to hard-cover has lost some of the originality of the earlier issues. As with everything, the cost increase does not equal the increase in quality; the quality of early issues is gone. I miss the old "Life" and much prefer the magazine format. It seems that as this publication grew in popularity, it was issued later and later each year (missing one year altogether)and now we have an "editors idea" of what happens when you fix something that isn't broken. Very disappointing in recent years!
