5 comments about Nikon D70s/D70 (Magic Lantern Guides).
- I was fortunate enough to be given a Nikon 70s by a good friend who was upgrading to a higher megapixel Nikon. I bought this book hoping that it would clarify the owner's manual. What a disappointment. For a beginning amateur the book is nothing more than poorly done rehash of the owner's manual and just as difficult to understand. The type and layout of information is amateurish, jerky and abbreviated as though the author is trying to save on words and the publisher trying to save on paper. Where's the good editor? There are no clear explanations for a neophyte who is unfamiliar with photographic lingo and techniques. I put the book away at the bottom of a drawer. Save your money and and lots of frustration.
- I was somewhat disappointed to this book as it seemed to be an expanded version of owner's manual only in new covers. Additionally, all pictures are in black-and-white! You may manage without this guide by just using the manual that came along with the camera. This guide although gives you some good hints every now and then, so it might be a practical addition to the official guide. You may find Nikon D70 Digital Field Guide even more interesting.
- In spite of the several negative reviews I read here (mainly saying this book contains only that which is found in the product manual) I appreciated the subject matter being presented in a very consecutive and logical manner - so much better than the product manual. This little book IS worth buying.
- With this book even a person like me who had no knoledge about digital photography like me could take pictures like a pro. Very easy to follow.Best book I've ever bought.
- This book is a terrific guide to helping understand all the functions of the D70/D70s. The explanation is more understandable than the owner's manual. I think this is a must for all new users of the D70/D70s.

3 comments about Green Roof: A Case Study: Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates' Design For the Headquarters of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
- This book is perfect for readers who already know that green roofs are good for our planet, but are looking for technical information on how to build one. Product and plant guidelines and the construction process are marvelously detailed. It's also generous with photos and diagrams. This particular green roof demonstrates that they can be more than just sedum in planters on a flat roof--green roofs can be a building amenity and enhance the viewshed for nearby buildings as well. The book is very well written. It should be noted that the author is a German landscape architect and Germany leads the world in green roof design. An excellent resource for developers, real estate executives, building owners, and designers.
- Exceptional text, supplemented with beautiful and informative graphics and diagrams. Very good book for anyone interested in Greenroofs.
- This case study is primarily geared towards the client's requirements and satisfaction, rather than basic green roof benefits. For example, there is more emphasis put on employee/ human use of the roof over the traditional benefits that roof greening putatively confers. Although there are some interesting techniques employed, like the grating over the sedum plantings, it is quite clear that roof greening is still for the elite rather than us common folk. Considering this, the concept of roof greening still has a long way to go before it will become a truly 'sustainable' practice in North America. The ASLA intended this project to showcase their involvement in this arena, but we would all be better served if they would test/employ techniques that were affordable to the masses rather than the wealthy elite.

2 comments about Dogs: 101 Adorable Breeds.
- This is a beautiful book with very adorable photos of many different dog breeds. I found myself falling in love with dozens of the cute and cuddly breeds and even some of the types of dogs I'd never have thought I would be drawn to. Rachel Hale is a fabulous photographer who really captures the essence of the pups. What a great book!
- Dogs: 101 Adorable Breeds is a photographic showcase for dog breed lovers. Each two-page spread features a striking, professional-quality photograph of a breed of dog on one page, and a brief amount of text concerning the breed's history, disposition, and appearance. Dogs: 101 Adorable Breeds is not a comprehensive guide to caring for one's pet, but rather a brilliantly assembled tribute to man's best friend in all his beautiful glory. A wonderful coffee-table giftbook highly recommended for dog lovers everywhere.

1 comments about In Classic Style: The Splendor of American Ballet Theatre.
- [...]
"Clearly, I need to attend the ballet more often. When I think of schlepping to a theatre to see the ballet, I think of "The Nutcracker" and tight tights. This new coffee table book which has just come out (and, seriously, if you don't have a long coffee table then you won't be able to open it; she's a big girl) features glorious photography from the American Ballet Theatre's staple productions. You've got your "Romeo & Juliet," your "The Sleeping Beauty" and of course, your "Swan Lake." All the photos are stunning, all the costumes and poses are glorious, all the men's arms make me feel bad about myself and reminds me check the Equinox class schedule for that abs and booty workshop I've had my eye on. If you're like me, and not as familiar as you should be with ballet, then you'll see spreads from shows that will catch your attention and perhaps entice you to purchase over-priced season tickets. There's a one-act version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," just called "The Dream" that intrigues me, as well as "Othello." Their new season opens on 19 May, so get ready. For a peak at last year's opening night gala, check out this video on The New York Times' site. Lorne Michaels, Lynda Carter, and old folks (who are SO not ballerinas) getting their groove on at the after-party make it one of those little web treasures that makes me yearn to be back on the streets of Manhattan. Insert sigh here."

2 comments about Cherokee.
- This is a beautifully written and important book, which should be read by anyone interested in the Cherokee and the human condition in general. Also highly recommended is Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears by Jerry Ellis. Nominated for a Pulitzer, it has been in print for 16 years and chronicles his 900 mile walk along the Cherokee Trail of Tears.
- A very beautiful book.
It ads greatly to my knowledge of the Cherokee and brings back many of my childhood memories.
The presentation done perfectly.

This is a companion to "The Earth" by Alberto Betrolazzi which I just wrote a Review for on October 12,2ooy. It is by the same people, and similar in size and other qualities.
Again with 735 pages and mostly photographs. I personally enjoyed this book more for a couple of reasons.First ,there is much more involvement with people, animals fish, and overall photographs that are more inspired and interesting than just beautiful photographs. Also,in "The Earth",the photographs are nearly all taken from aircraft;but in this book the photographs are from Space, from the Air,at Sea Level,From Boats,up close with animals,( Pages 207-239 Seas of Ice are supurb ,interesting and awe-inspiring).Then there are those fantastic photographs taken Underwater!! of fish and a variety of creatures. The photographs of Man's dwellings beside the sea and his enjoyment of Surfing and Sailing on the Sea. Shipwreck and other residue of History on the Seabed, the magnificence of volcanic interaction with the sea,all make this much more interesting to the reader ,or I should say,the viewer.
I have reviewed several books of this type and this is one of the best.
- What is there about 'looking' at certain kinds of scenes and sights, and phenomena which gives us such pleasure?
Why do we love to see?
I have read other books in this series on natural phenomena which gave great delight.
But the sea somehow has a power to move our imagination, to suggestively reshape our feeling, to give us new light and new dreams?
The photos here are so richly - colored, and they enable us to see the sea in ways which we with our ordinary terms of access would not .From undersea and from distances above , the photographs give us pictures which seem to be kind of poetry for the eyes.
- I've been looking for an ocean book like this for so long. It's gorgeous and has everything you could want....colorful coral, waves, beautiful water, sunsets, etc. I 2nd the person who said "Perfect"!
- Cheapest way to get overview in amazing pictures of our sea on 736 pages. Incredible, perfect gift.

1 comments about Tender Violence: Domestic Visions in an Age of U.S. Imperialism (Cultural Studies of the United States).
- Wexler writes clearly, skillfully interspersing history, sociology, and photography to argue that domesticity was some CREATED, not just "always there" in the US. Wexler especially emphasized the role of photography in supporting a discourse of white women's purity and black slave women's (or newly freed black women's) down-to-earth, animal nature. An excellent book for all students of art, social science, or history, this text can be used for undergraduates or graduate students.

4 comments about Great Lakes Lighthouses Encyclopedia.
- If you're looking for information on the lighthouses of the Great Lakes, you will find no better resource than this book. It covers every single light out there, and yet there is still plenty of room for interesting stories and great photographs.
Be aware, however, that if you're looking for a book that you can tuck in your back pocket and take with you on a trip, you will need to look elsewhere. The book is too big and heavy to carry around overly much.
- the best lighthouse book we have seen, and we have several excellent books, this is concise, easy to read and laid out so you can make a lighthouse color tour.
- This book provides more information about the lighthouses of the Great Lakes, past & present, than any I have read before. It is an outstanding resource.
- This is really a great lighthouse book. It has beautiful pictures and a lot of information about the history of over 600 lighthouses of the Great Lakes. It even has information on lost lighthouses such the Kalamazoo River Light near Saugatuck, Michigan. I know of no other book which has more comprehensive coverage of all of the Great Lakes lights and has it all in one volume. And my copy was a real bargain purchased a lower price here than any of the bookstores in my area.
