1 comments about Dog Days Bogota.

  1. I am so clearly biased, as my wife and i adopted a baby girl from Bogota, Colombia in February of 2007. These images were part of our journey, adn speak to us on a very personal level. But, having shared the book with many non-adoptive friends and aquaintences, I know they speak to them as as well.

An amazing project I highly recommend!

1 comments about Vivienne Westwood (Va).

  1. We caught the Vivienne Westwood retrospective traveling show at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, and were blown away by the inventive, fun, nutty clothes this woman produced. This book serves as a exhibition catalog, although many of the pieces in the show are not in the book, and nothing matches seeing the wild shoes, hats, dresses and frocks in person. The book design is a minor annoyance, as it can be a little hard to find the garment pictured, who was wearing it, or when it was created. And I think frankly the girl has her best work behind her, but the glory of it cannot be exaggerated, or, to put it another way, her exaggerations were truly glorious. Over The Top in the very best way.

    Thoreau would no doubt disapprove....

5 comments about Anton Corbijn: U2&i: the Photographs 1982-2004.

  1. Brilliantly put together coffee table book - i recommend this to U2 fans - fantastic collection of photography- great variety covering each band member and even some family photos- loads of unseen photos - great idea with the hand written notes .... worth every cent

  2. This book have new photographs that not has been seen about U2, and they have very good quality. This is not another book about U2, in my point this is a essential book for fans of U2.

  3. Gorgeous pictures! Must have for true fanatic fans. A little pricey for the casual or average fan unless you have a crush on one of the band members. Anton's handwritten comments are a wonderful touch. They make you feel like you're part of the family. Definitely worth the money to me.

  4. No words can describe the beauty, quality and detailed work of this book; you can really tell the dedication Anton Corbijn put into it, as well as his loyalty to the band through all these years. It's not only a masterpiece describing through pictures and notes the history of the greatest rock band in the world, but also a must have for any major U2 fan. It's personalized album type format makes it a wonderful experience both to read and look, and the quality and art work of all the pictures is out of this world; it's almost like you grow closer to the band! I loved it and can't get enough of it!! It's worth every cent. Really!!

  5. The iconic photos in this book are an essential addition to any U2 fans collection. It's great to see other shots taken in the same session as the well known images that have graced the magazines and album covers over the years. Best of all are the explanations behind the shots and the honesty that comes across from the photographer and the band.

5 comments about The Best of Robert Service.

  1. I was actually very disappointed with the condition of this book when I received it. It had been packed in an envelope that was close to being too small, and the jacket was torn in several places. I purchased this book among others, as a 45 year anniversary gift to my wife. Robert Service had been a particular favorite of her father, and I knew she would treasure the book. I will just have to tell her that I meant well, but it didn't turn out so well.

  2. I am very happy with this book. It combines a lot of Service's greatest poems with great Photos of the land and people he wrote about. It is a lovely book that you can be proud to have in your collection.

  3. I love Robert Service's raw tones and poems. He tells them with a grit that is true to heart and really just gives you a feel for what is going on and what it was like to be in the real wilderness days. I have heard he described as crude and if that's how you want to view it...go ahead but these poems aren't crude...they tell the true spirit of the classic days with great detail and life.

  4. I first stumbled upon Robert W. Service when I found a small volume of his poetry from before and during World War One in an antique shop in Maine. I hungered for more, searched the internet, and was thrilled to find this book available, as well as others. Service's poetry is what poetry should be, at least in my mind. It flows evenly, it rhymes, it tells stories about human beings' lives, feelings, and struggles. Plus, he deals with people, places, and times in history that interest me, especially World War One, northern North America, Europe, etc. This is an excellent, excellent collection of his works.

  5. Robert Service, if anyone, could be called "the grandfather of cowboy poets." This has been a popular genre over the past few years and much of the work done by these wonderful men and women can be traced back to Service's poems and style. Being called the "Bard of the Yukon" is certainly true, but sells this particular writer short. His works include so much more that just the delightful poems of the Canadian Territory. Simply written, with a story, they are quite a delight for both old and young alike. I recent years, some of our elitist in our academic world have been less than kind to this poet. This is all well and good with me. They simply don't get it. Service's work will quite likely endure far longer than some of the ranting I read in the professional journals. I read these poems to young folks in my classes, and they seldom fail to delight and indeed, inspire. It is difficult to go wrong with this one. Highly recommend.

5 comments about Born to Run: The Unseen Photos.

  1. For any true Springsteen fan to have anything that gives you a glimpse into the beginnings of greatness is awesome. Great photos, some amusing, worth the purchase. Only disappointment had nothing to do with the book itself but with the way it was shipped. Came in a bit banged up and dirty - Amazon should bubble wrap the individual item and not just toss it in a box.

  2. Very professional and quick delivery time. Would do business again in a heartbeat, no complaints.

  3. This book has been made by a person who really apreciates Bruce's songs and for people who feel the same. It's a beautiful review of the pictures taken 30 years ago for Born to Run album. The paper used, the quality of the material, the compositon of the images...

  4. We just took a ton of photos of my 6 month old twin girls for our Christmas card. Looking at all those digital images trying to decide which was the best shot reminded me a lot of looking at this book. A lot of pictures of the subjects (in their case Bruce and Clarence Clemons and in my case Katie and Maggie) in a couple of different outfits in poses only slightly different from the shot before. After awhile they all start to look alike until finally you just say, "Uhh, that one," the person next to you agrees and you have your album cover/Christmas card.

Seriously, I am a big Springsteen fan and liked both his music and his look from that time best, so the book was a must for me, but if you're not that kind of fan and like Springsteen because you think he is or was cute--this ain't the book for you.

  5. A book with really great pics. It's a must have for a Springsteen-fan. Worth every penny. What more can I say.

4 comments about Prints and Drawings of Kathe Kollwitz.

  1. This book is a great teaching aid for drawing and the transition from drawing to print processes. Great examples of the simplicity of marks necessary to create a form or mood recognisable to all. It is as much about what is left out as it is about marks made. Very dark subject matter delt with in a sensite way, a must for all for teaching and inspiration.

  2. This large-scale volume does a very nice job of covering many of Kollwitz's finest works...and at a very nice price, thanks to Dover Publications.

  3. Kollwitz was hated and persecuted by Hitler for taking the underside of humanity. She presents the real effects of modern warfare upon our defenseless civilians women and children. She presents the weary face of defenseless despair under relentless attack. She is the face which must be seen, like the courageous and proud Frida Kahlo, yet hers too weary for pride and fierce resistance.

Get this book and LOOK . . .

  4. Kathe Kollwitz shows real people dealing with the real problem of the Second World War. Her drawings are poignant reminders of the love and humanity that can exist in the midst of madness. She is also not afraid to show the horror of the war and the tolls it takes on its victims.

5 comments about New York Vertical.

  1. This book may be appropriate as a guide of skyscrapers in NYC. But I feel a little frustration when I look as a photo catalogue.

  2. I ordered Horst Hermann's "New York Vertical" after a trip to New York where I feel in love with the height and grandure. I bought it because I wanted something to remind myself of the magic I had experienced. I was then amazed to find this book of postcards being offered and decided to buy it so I could share them with friends and family. I was completely disappointed in the photographs that were chosen for this endevour as there are far more dynamic photographs in his book. I wish that care had been taken in the selection of photographs for this collection. If you are just wanting some cards it is fine, but if like me you fell in love with all of his work it will be a let down.

  3. New York Vertical is to my knowledge the best book there is! I want to congratulate Horst Hamann, he did the impossible to photograph the New York we all love. The black and white photographs captured the beauty of the city, the format of the pictures is incredible! It's a masterpiece! BRAVO

  4. I fell in love with New York many years ago and visited for the first time last summer. The photographer's capture of the architecture is outstanding, the accompanying quotes well worth remembering. So, until I return the pages of New York Vertical will keep the memory fresh.

    Thanks Horst.

  5. As a photographer who also has captured images of NY in black and white, I can appreciate this most beautiful publication. The meticulously printed duotones should be the standard for all photography books. Congratulations to Horst. Your book has an honored place on my coffee table. And this new, smaller size, makes it much more practical and affordable with little loss of enjoyment from the larger edition.
