3 comments about The Book of Caddyshack: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Greatest Movie Ever Made.
- If you like the movie, this is the most comprehensive guide to everything you could ever know about the funniest film ever! It has detailed descriptions of all the scenes, with interviews and opinions from all the key players. I would recommend this book even if you haven't seen the movie, as it can only inspire you to buy the dvd. The comedy within this movie has been long copied, but never bettered. As the author states - the belief is that much of the material was "improvised" but that this could not be further from the truth, as it was created with exacting direction and srcipting. But the originality, and strength of the comedy team make it a brilliant one of! This book is a worthy disection, of the nature and depth to this originality. It's a peach hon!
- Awesome!!! Just awesome!!! I didn't think that anything could possibly increase my appreciation of this movie, but this book certainly has done that. It's like pop-up video for the whole movie. A must for any Caddyshack fan!!!
- The Book of Caddyshack is awesome - perhaps even worthy of the Dalai Lama himself!
Caddyshack is one of my all time favorite movies and this book makes me love and appreciate it even more.
The book has all types of tidbits and facts about every minute of the movie and humorous interviews with the actors and production crew members. Thanks to the author's research, after reading this book and watching the movie again, you will notice all sorts of stuff that you didn't see before...guaranteed.
Not only do you learn about the four big stars - Knight, Dangerfield, Murray, and Chase - but there are great stories about all the hilarious supporting characters: Noonan, Spaulding, Lacey Underall, D'Annunzio, Porterhouse, Maggie, Dr. Beeper, Lou Loomis, the Havercamps, and others....which is nice.
The Book of Caddyshack really is a peach, hon!

5 comments about Factory Records: The Complete Graphic Album.
- This book is an awesome look back at some of the best artwork and packaging of its time. The footnotes for each "Fac" are interesting and the reproductions of the artwork are showcased nicely. I only wish there were some photos of the packaging, for instance the famous Blue Monday single with the die-cut, it would have been nice to see how it looked. Still, I think this is a great book!
- I've always been a huge fan of Factory Records and the designs of Peter Saville so this book was a dream come true. Pictures of all the artwork from Fac 1 onwards, all the New Order, Joy Division, Happy Mondays, Durutti Column - everything you could want.
A wonderful gorgeous book, the pictures are bright and clear, plus history and stories on major aspects of the artwork - highly recommended fro any Factory / New Order / Peter Saville fan.
- This is an excellent book for fans of Factory Records. Factory was label that always had beautiful graphic design work. The album covers and poster art were a showcase for the design work of Peter Saville. I highly recommend this thorough book to fans of the label.
- FACTORY RECORDS: THE COMPLETE GRAPHIC ALBUM could have been featured in our Music Shelf area but is profiled here for its artistic visual inspection of one British music label's eye-catching covers and productions. Notes for each production outline the varying graphic design choices which made the albums notable and different, making this a fine choice not just for contemporary music libraries but for art library holdings strong in graphic arts representations.
- This is a magnificent time machine. There are a lot of labels people loved - Stiff, sst, etc. My favorite was Factory. With only a few exceptions, the music coming out on this label defined English music in the Eighties. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was unquestionably the song of the year in 1980 for instance. But what made the music even more evocative was the artwork along with it. The famous Joy Division covers, and the mighty "Power, Corruption, and Lies" are just a few examples. Thanks to New Order I learned who Fantin-Latour was, they skipped over him in my art history classes. I collected all the albums and 12 inch 45s. I especially liked A Certain Ratio, after I saw them at Danceteria in 1982 (I think that was the year). Where is the vinyl of yesteryear? The music is all on cd, but those tiny covers just dont do justice to the art. Here is all the glory in one beautiful package. If only I had made it to the Hacienda back in the day...

5 comments about Leonardo Drawings (Dover Art Library).
- Absolutely horrible print quality. Did you get these pictures from internet?
- Leonardo da Vinci
was an Italian Renaissance polymath:
an architect, musician, anatomist, inventor, engineer, sculptor, geometer, and painter. He has been described as the archetype of the " Renaissance man" and as a universal genius, a man infinitely curious and infinitely inventive. He is also considered one of the greatest painters that ever lived.
Portrait in red chalk, circa 1512 to 1515, widely (though not universally) accepted as a genuine self-portrait.In his lifetime, Leonardo - he had no surname in the modern sense; "da Vinci" simply means "from Vinci" - was an engineer, artist, anatomist, physiologist and much more.
His full birth name was "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci", meaning "Leonardo, of ser Piero from Vinci". Leonardo is famous for his paintings, such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, as well as for influential drawings such as the Vitruvian Man. He designed many inventions that anticipated modern technology, such as the helicopter, tank, use of solar power, the calculator, etc., though few of these designs were constructed or were feasible in his lifetime. In addition, he advanced the study of anatomy, astronomy, and civil engineering. Of his works, only a few paintings survive, together with his notebooks (scattered among various collections) containing drawings, scientific diagrams and notes.
- The print quality is so low and I can hardly see anything. forget it.
- I was very disappointed in the quality of the Adobe Reader version I downloaded. I don't know if the other reviewers were reviewing hard copy versions or digital downloads. A hard copy version might be OK, but the digital version is not worth a cent in my opinion. I was hoping to be able to make some small letter-size posters for my office at work, but the resolution was so poor I don't think any of the drawings will be usable. My recommendation is don't waste your money on the download.
- The reprints in this book are of absoultely terrible quality. If you are planning to use them as sources for drawings forget it! There are other Dover books that are better such as Sargent's. This book is of no use at all.

5 comments about Window Seat: The Art of Digital Photography and Creative Thinking.
- I bought this book with two goals in mind: 1) learn how to develop an eye for pleasing photographs, and 2) learn how to shoot pictures through dirty, scratched airline windows. (How does she do that, anyway?)
Goal #1 was not met. The author has dozens of great photos taken from the window seat of an airplane, but no words at all to go along with them. I thought she would discuss why she thinks her pictures are appealing, but she doesn't say a word about that. I was able to analyze her shots for myself and it helped me understand a little bit about lines and color. However, having someone else help me see concepts is why I buy books.
But the most important part of the book (for me) was the Appendix. It contains the details of how she fixed photos taken through dirty, scratched windows...and how I can use this concept to improve any poor photo (incorrect exposure, low-contrast, etc.) by the specific techniques she discusses, along with "before" and "after" photos illustrating how well the technique works. It also gives specific instructions in how to use Photoshop to correct other problems in photos, too.
Mission #2 (shoot through airline windows) was brilliantly accomplished. The appendix is a terrific "Photoshop" book and gets to the point quickly and concisely.
- I love aviation and photography yet lack any professional training in either field. I had hoped this book would be at a level I could gain something from--I was wrong.
- I have learned a new consepts in showing what is important in the picture. Great book and learning tool.
- I absolutely love this book!
I found every image, every page to be filled with breathtaking beauty.
Even the most simple photos of clouds, Julieanne Kost has managed to create images the likes I have never seen before.
She has managed to take something that I had always taken for granted, the view from a plane window, and created a whole new vision for me to enjoy. Maybe that is the best way to describe it, her work is the difference between simply seeing and true vision.
I flip through this book whenever I am in need of inspiration.
I have bought 5 copies now and given 4 as gifts.
Everyone whom I gave these to, genuinely loved them as much as I do.
I suggest you buy your 5 now ;-)
- Window Seat (The Art of Digital Photography & Creative Thinking) by Julieanne Kost
Reviewed by Diane Williams, member of the Eureka Photoshop Users Group, 6/20/07
Window Seat is 90% coffee table photo book and 10% self-help and imaging techniques work flow book.
This 147 page book is a beautiful visual memory of those sights you see when you gaze out the window of a plane. I know I have tried to capture what I see out the window of a plane and have been very disappointed by the images. I may be able to make something of them now with this work flow.
Kost shows us sample original images captured by her and we see the final image after she has applied image corrections in Photoshop. Her instructions are brief. This is not a step-by-step tutorial giving all the input numbers. It is a general overview of the work flow what may be necessary, how you get there by pointing to the tools, and what they can do for you.
The self-help part of the book lists Julieanne's 18 self help and creative thinking hints. Here they are:
Master your tools.
Listen to what your life is trying to tell you.
Be open to whatever comes your way.
Share what you know and learn from others.
Collaborate with other creative people, especially the quiet ones.
Be flexible. Learn to negotiate.
Fix whatever you complain about most.
View every challenge as a possible discovery.
Take 15 minutes for yourself everyday.
Figure out what you need to do to reach your zero point.
Integrate work and Art; both will benefit.
Take up an interest in something you know nothing about.
Look at new stuff- and what you already know- with fresh perspective.
Keep a journal.
Visualize first, Photoshop second.
Replace your thoughts with intuition
Play! Play! Play!
Know when you're done.
This book is worth a look even if it is just to vicariously have the window seat. It will not teach anyone much about Photoshop.

- Awesome -- That's all I can say. If you're interested in houseboats for any reason, this is your book.
History, information, great writing, and awesome photography! This one interests everyone. Great coffee table book. Kathy -- neighbor to "The Lindner House" featured in the book. p.s. If you live in the Portland, Sausalito, or Seattle Houseboat communities, you will especially enjoy this book.
- I gave this book to a few close friends for the holidays. I have never had such great feedback about a giftbook. The book is not only beautiful to look at, but it contains such great details, history, and stories about houseboats and their owners. I definitely give this 5 stars!! I look forward to Flanagan's next book!

5 comments about The Chicago Outfit (IL) (Images of America).
- Got it as a gift and absolutely love it. FILLED with photos and accurate info. A must have for the avid Chicago Mob collector!
- I thought that the research was excellent and the information was presented in an interesting, yet educational format. Having lived near Chicago and visiting many, many times it was great to get the goods on the organized crime and some of the background on what made Chicago what it is today. I am personal friends with the neice of one of the books long running Outfit standouts and we have mentioned this book to a lot of her travel groups. Two thumbs up for the pictures and descriptions. Mayor Daily may have tried to wipe out the past in the 1960's, but history is what history was and closing your eyes, sticking your fingers in your ears while yelling, "la-la-ls-la" while having important landmarks torn down is not the way to deal with this bit of history.
- This book is a great overview pictoral of the Chicago Outfit with a focus on the early years. For me it was a goldmine as I was doing a genealogy search as well.
- This is an exceptionally concise overview of organized crime in Chicago and Cook County, Illinois. The text is supported with a large number of archival photographs, including many which have not been available to the general public before. A significant number of the pictures appear to have originated with the Chicago Crime Commission, an independent investigatory body which was established at the beginning of the Prohibition Era. That the commission continues to exist today tells you that the Chicago Outfit continued to operate and flourish long after the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and the Volstead Act.
Many of these photographs were originally intended as to be used as resources to support law enforcement activities and many were not published in the print media. Each chapter division begins with a detailed summary of the particular decade under examination and is followed by a series of photographs with descriptive captions. Binder's comments are brief and precise. The book focuses upon Capone and his successors, but also contains some information on their precursors and rivals.
If you only have time to read a single volume on organized crime in Chicago and its suburbs, "The Chicago Outfit" can serve as your "Cliff Notes." It can also be used as a convenient reference work and starting point for those interested in reading more upon the subject before they take up the heavier tomes. You might well find yourself engrossed in another book and pausing to seek out a photograph in "The Chicago Outfit" before you resume your reading.
- This is a fantastic book. A lot of pictures that have never been seen until now. If you don't have it, get it!

5 comments about On Film Editing.
- This is one of the classic texts on the principles and practices of modern film editing. While it was written nearly thirty years ago and refers occasionally to the techniques of linear editing on actual film, its summary of the rules of good editing remains as relevant today as ever, even for filmmakers who will only ever edit video on their computers. Editing is where the film is brought to life and Dmytryk outlines in a very clear and engaging way the basic considerations that allow that to take place. The author was not only a major filmmaker but a master teacher, and it shows in both the precision and clarity of his explanations.
What makes the guide as fresh today as when it appeared is that it is primarily not about technical considerations but about how an editor has to think in order to construct seamless and engaging scenes that are true to the overall story of a film. At the same time this thinking is given a practical application. The focus is on why rather than how, but it goes much further in explaining the basics of what to do when editing and how to put together a scene than many other books out there.
Dmytryk makes a distinction between a cutter and an editor, and cutting is merely competence with the equipment of film editing, whether it is a moviola or Final Cut Pro. Editing is always thinking, and is as creative in its approach to the film as shot as directing is creative in its approach to the film as written. Subtle variations in editing can change completely the tone or mood of a film. Dmytryk illustrates his points with several examples from major films he directed or edited (e.g. The Caine Mutiny, Murder, My Sweet and many more). Dmytryk is a master of his craft and is generous in his description of what it takes to pursue this mastery. This little book is an indispensible part of any filmmaker or film lover's library.
- What if you have already read another editing book? Read this and then go back and read your other book. The author has a lifetime of experience in Hollywood and explains how Hollywood movies are edited, at least until the 1970's (most still use these methods). The methods described are the standards that form the basic language of the craft. Another plus is that the work is very concise and a good read into the history of film.
- One of the most important books in my life. I read and re-read this book in preparation for editing my FIRST film ever. Reviewers say my film possesses a "master level" edit. This book is why. Buy it. Read it. Re-read it.
My message to all young grasshopper: Read. And now read some more. Read and you become master phlegm-en-zepher.
- this is an excellent book on this very delicate craft. I also liked "the eye is quicker" but this was very informative and a better read. there is no substitute for actually editing and what works is hard to descibe in words but this book demonstrates some very subtles points and Mr. Dmytyk is a film maker. If your just starting read the eye is quicker but if you have some experience and want to go to the next level, this is a good one.
- This is not only a really awesome book to help improve
your editing skill, but also one of the nicest overall books I've
ever read. Worth while buying.
