1 comments about Losing Your Dog: Coping With Grief When a Pet Dies.
- Left me feeling more depressed. I stayed with my dog during euthanasia, but was very very sad and crying. Author indicated crying made it harder for my dog. Belle was my best friend, and I needed to be with her, as well as her needing me. But to indicate weakness, because of strong emotion is not sensitive. Also includes stories of cruel pet owners who considered, or did have dogs killed because of behavior, minor illness etc... I was looking to cope with my pain not feel additional sadness. If you are not opposed to a religious book, read "Cold Noses At The Pearly Gates" very comforting.

1 comments about The Human-Animal Bond and Grief.
- I was desparately looking for a book on grieving the loss of a pet when I lost both of my cats to illness. I was prepared for one loss, but not the other, which took me by surprise. I came across this work by Lagnoni, Butler and Hetts, and found that it not only helped me see what was going on in my own emotional situation, but it also taught me what I should be looking for in a veterinary clinic. Working as a volunteer at an animal shelter, I also see the effects of euthanasia on the workers there, and perhaps this book would be helpful to some in those situations. It is clearly written, stocked with good examples and true life experiences, and sets up a protocol for vet practices to be better able to deal with their clients, both people and animals, in life changing situations. It accepts that animals are a large part of many peoples lives, as important as people. In doing so, the authors recognize that compassion, empathy, and understanding are necessary to help clients cope with their pet loss, and grief. It also recognizes that staff working in the animal health care field are also in need of guidance on how to cope with these difficult situations. The book is well organized, and makes a good reference text for specific situations, as well as provides general overview on how to achieve a compassionate and caring clinic.

2 comments about The Good Shepherd: A Special Dog's Gift of Healing.
- This is a book that is well worth reading. If you like stories about dogs who help people in ways that they very much needed, then this is the book for you.
- This is an amazing story of inspiration and hope about a very special German shepherd named Grizzly, his young master who battled long and valiantly with terminal cancer, and the boy's courageous mother who was rescued from her own crippling grief by this incredible dog. Fulfilling her son's dying wish, Lana Davis began bringing Grizzly to hospitals to visit sick children, and soon began training others to do the kind of work she and Grizzly were doing. During the next six years, Lana and Grizzly co-founded two successful animal-assisted therapy organizations, including the Utah Animal-Assisted Therapy Association, trained hundreds of volunteer teams to carry on their work, and helped to heal the broken hearts of dozens of abused and emotionally troubled children. Today, though blind, Grizzly continues to inspire others with his almost unbelievable intuition for discerning what people need, be it his special brand of talk or a furry body to hug.
Here's what some early reviewers have said about this book: "I cried throughout this incredibly moving book. It proves what I claimed in Dogs Never Lie About Love, that dogs have a greater capacity for love than do humans. And they are more sensitive, and wiser and more compassionate, the list goes on and on. This book shows the profound love and compassion that dogs feel, mysteriously and wonderfully, for us. A book for anyone who loves dogs, and children, and the love between dogs and children." - Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of Dogs Never Lie About Love and When Elephants Weep. "Do not be fooled into believing that this is merely a book about a brave boy, a mother with a fierce and tender heart, and their uncannily intelligent dog. It is, of course, about these things but, more important, it is about relationships and about healing. The Good Shepherd teaches us just how broad and strong and miraculous the horizon of relationships can be when we include animals in the mix as friends, family, and--yes--as mentors and healers." - Susan McElroy, author of Animals as Teachers and Healers, in her Foreward to The Good Shepherd "This book of love and courage demonstrates the healing powers of animals when our hearts are open to them. It gives new meaning to being 'touched by an angel.' Many angels are animals, and many animals become angels in our lives." -Dr. Michael W. Fox, veterinarian and author of The Soul of the Wolf and numerous other books. "Tears of sadness and tears of joy streamed down my face as story after story opened my heart to the love, miracles, and healing shared by Grizzly and Lana. A must-read for all animal-lovers." - Dr. Allen M. Schoen, author of Love, Miracles, and Animal Healing "Jo Coudert's words touch one like gentle hands on an animal--and reach the same level of communication." - Betty White, actress and author "After reading The Good Shepherd, no one can doubt the ability of animals to teach and heal. Readers will enjoy abundant moving stories of troubled individuals changed by the power of the human-animal bond and animal-assisted therapy. Following the examples of Lana and Grizzly, I hope thousands of people-animal teams will seek training to share their special kind of love with people in need in their own families and communities." - Linda Hines, President and CEO, Delta Society

1 comments about Absent Friend: Coping with the Loss of a Treasured Pet.
- This book helped me tremendously in coping with the death of my dog. It addressed every feeling and question I have surrounding the euthanasia. It also has chapters on lost pets and re-homing which would be very helpful for anyone in that circumstance.
If you are reading this, you probably need the book. Good luck to you, I hope you will be able to resolve your grief issues.

5 comments about Good-Bye My Friend: Tributes, Poems, Prose, and Other Ways to Remember Your Pet.
- I love this book! From the moment I saw the beautiful images that adorn the pages of this tribute to lost pets and the memorials their owners have built I knew this was a book I had to own. The resources in the back of the book are also essential information for any pet lover.
- I felt happiness and sadness when I read this beautiful and unique book. Happiness when reading about all the joy the animals have given to their people, and sadness when reading about their losses. Only so many stories and pictures can be put in a book, but I feel that these stories also represent every animal of every person who reads this book. I am currently dealing with my 8-year old German Shepherd going lame, and it was very hard for me to pick this book up and read it again. But I did, and the story of Arlo, the German Shepherd/K-9 Hero from Oklahoma City touched me and made me cry. I know I will eventually have to deal with the loss of my dog, maybe sooner that I want to, but this book has helped me to think about that inevitible time, and what I will want to do then. This book also has a great list of resources that are available all over the country. I highly recommend this book to purchase for you and all of your friends/family members that love animals.
- This was a unique and beautifully arranged book. It brought back so many memories of the pets I have lost. It's truly touching. I will buy this for my many animal lover family members and friends when that day comes for them too. It would make a wonderful gift!
- This is such a unique beautiful book. If you love animals you would love this book. Those stories about pets inside this book made me cry. I lost 2 dogs in recent years and there are a lot of stories I can relate to. This book helps you to deal with your pets' deaths. It is also an art book. The pictures are all beautiful and artful. You can enjoy this book in that sense, too. I highly recommend it!!
- A book that will let you know that there are others out there, just like you, who mourn the loss of their pet. Good-Bye My Friend shares sorrow, laughter and love. The pictures show how others have given tribute to their lost companions. A great gift to a grieving friend or a resource for a veterinarian's office.
