2 comments about Acting: A Handbook of the Stanislavski Method.

  1. Truly a must have reference for any aspiring actor. Not dry or boring like other reviewer stated. It is fast paced and offers practical info. A classic!

  2. This is a pretty good overview of Stanislavski's "Method Acting" as used by Brando, Dean, and Pacino.

At times, the book drones on and on...tiring you out. So if you can rent it at the library, do it.

2 comments about Sunday in the Park with George (Applause Musical Library).

  1. Sondheim and Lapine wrote an excellent musical about the pointillist painter George Seurat. I really started to love the musical when I read Marc Bauch's "Themes and Topics of the American Musical" (Marburg: Tectum Verlag, 2001. ISBN: 3828811418), which I recommend to get to know how intertextually Sondheim worked. Bauch put Sondheim in the tradition of the American Musical with reference to his themes.

  2. This show is like a work of the main Character Georges Seurat. Point and point are putted together to a great piece of art. Stepehn Sondheim who recieved the Pulitzer Prize for this astonishing work of American Musical Theatre puts all the points together to one brilliant composition of story and storytelling his co-author James Lapine who wrote the book while Sondheim wrote the lyrics does a great job, too. It is the most beautiful kind of lyric I ever had seen in this masterpiece: Children and art. I really enjoyed to read this book and it is essentially for everybody who is interested in the Musical Theatre.

5 comments about La dama del alba.

  1. this was a school book for spanish literature class, it wasn't the proper book this is the more complicated play version used for actors, but it was still quite good.

  2. Spanish literature has this strange fascination with death. This play, not a book like some below have called it, is one of the best I have read, having just finished many plays from the Romanticism era. This play has two major themes, acceptence of death and letting things from the past go. Greatly reccomended! Enjoy the read!

  3. I read this play in a college Spanish class. The play was very good, and It really motivated me to figure out what was being said. Reading Spanish literature is a great way to learn Spanish, this is a must read for anyone who is learning Spanish.

  4. This play is a masterpiece of the Spanish language. The play is inspiring, rich in the use of the language and a precise reflection of the people of Asturias (a region in Northern Spain). I fully recommend it. There is no reason for anybody educated not to like it (unless you're from Newton, MA, you're name is Alan Flamerwald and you don't know how to write nor read in Spanish). Please, read the play and judge.

  5. This play is captivating and is a fun and interesting way to learn Spanish. If I didn't understand a word, or sentence I raced to find out what was being said so that I could understand crucial plot events. I couldn't put it down until the end. Wonderful!

1 comments about Teatro Chicana: A Collective Memoir and Selected Plays (Chicana Matters).

  1. A wonderful expose from women members of Teatro Chicana from Cal State San Diego from the mid 1970's through early 1980's. Provides a political overview of the Chicano Movement, and the struggles of early Chicana feminsits seeking their poltical voice within a male dominated movement. Emphasis is on how the focus of their plays (which are included) reflected the social and cultural concerns of the times including, human rights, worker rights, immigration and gender issues. This memoir contains deeply personal and intimate memories of the actresses, and outlines their poltical development as young Mexicana and Chicana women forging new paths through their struggles and friendships. A must read for future feminists and Chicanas. A real tribute to the lasting friendship of women, and the humanitarian ideals that bind the human spirit.

1 comments about The Face Is a Canvas: The Design and Technique of Theatrical Makeup.

  1. I "discovered" this book at a conference in 1996 and had the privilege of talking with Orlin Corey about the book, Irene Corey's work and the weather (San Antonio in the summer!) I have not had the opportunity to teach from this book until now and I am finding it, far and away, the most valuable text in my teaching arsenal. The book is useful for both the actor-as-makeup-artist and for the designer. Unlike other books that either oversimplify the processes or present the techniques without applying design, Irene Corey's book is organized in logical, progressive lessons. The real value of the book, however, is in Corey's emphasis on design (that is, planning the makeup to apply to a particular artistic situation) as a platform for teaching technique.

1 comments about Tell It Like It Is: Fifty Monologues for Talented Teens.

  1. Peg Kehret's book of monologues for teens is a well-rounded, useful book for both classroom use and competition.

The scenes range from funny (Too Much Homework pg. 3, Why It Took Me Four Hours to Make my Bed pg. 112) to sweet (Fatty Patty pg. 27, Grampa's Eyes pg. 36, Heavenly Dimes pg. 45) to sad (Ryan's Gun pg 53). Kehret has several monologues concerning animals (Doggie Delights pg. 8, Toto Tells the Truth About Oz pg. 15, The Day I Was a Dog pg. 25, Roadside Rescue pg. 36, A Home for Katie pg. 84) and rites of passages (The Tooth Fairy pg. 6, Goodbye, Old Jeans pg. 19, Changing Classes pg. 49). Also included in the offerings are historical monologues about segregation (Remembering Little Rock pg. 34), the depression (Dust Bowl Memories pg. 73) and Manifest Destiny (Wagon Train West pg. 94).

She crafts both contemporary and historical characters with a large range of emotion and enough flow and peak to each monologue that beginners to advanced students in speech and drama will be able to utilize all 50 monologues. Many of the monologues are genderless which makes them even more useful. Each monologue presents a unique character voice that will challenge teens without making it impossible for them to sound natural while speaking. This is an excellent book and would make a smart purchase in preparation for the upcoming forensics season.
