3 comments about The Cecchetti Method of Classical Ballet: Theory and Technique.
- Believe me, this is a book well worth adding to your library. It is as specific in detail as both the Kirov and Bolshoi 'lessons in classical ballet' manuals. Cecchetti classes are named after the days of the week so on any day the teacher would announce that 'today we are doing the Tuesday class'. Anyone teacher keen on investigating different techniques will find this work highly informative and it will assist in the broadening of their vocational students' dance vocabulary.
- I am very satisfied with this purchase. The shipping was very fast and the book just great.
Thanks,
Carola Tovar

5 comments about Developing A Successful Cheerleading Program (Developing a Successful Program).
- This is an excellent bookby Headridge and Garr. It's really helpful for us coaches because it brings information and photos about procedures as well as documents for every purpose, such as parents' permission forms and others.
I do reccomend this book. Purchase it without fear, either if you are a new coach or an experienced one.
- This book is helpful for coaches that are working with young programs or are just starting a program.
- I am a first time coach, and this book has been a true gift for me! Every idea is wonderful and the printable forms have been so helpful. I wish I could say more, but I have 19 girls waiting for me to begin practice right now. A practice that will be organized, consistent and well worth their time thanks to Pam's book.
Sincerely,
A Cheerleading Coach from Washington State
- This book is a completely comprehensive look at coaching a cheersquad. It is not specific to the United States, so most of the suggestions, strategies and helpful hits can be used in countries outside of there (for me specifically Australia). Just starting a squad is must less daunting with the assistance of this text, as it clearly lays out an idiot-proof way to work through each step. Thanks heaps!!
- These authors covered every detail of starting a cheer program or improving an already successful cheer program. The forms they provided were an excellent resource. Thanks for taking the time to compile your experience in coaching cheerleading.

5 comments about The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology: Soprano Vol. I.
- It has a great variety of vocal selections. If you want modern, rock musical stuff though, this is definitely not the right choice. I think that, since this is soprano, they have put much of the music into a slightly higher key (when compared to the sheet music for the musicals themselves).
- I'm a teenager and I'm using Musical Theater Anthology volume 3 as one of my books in voice lessons. It contains musical theater songs that some people might not have heard of, but all the songs are very good. At the same time it includes many well known songs. My only complaint is some of the accompianment is a little strange and some of the keys of the songs are weird. Other then that its a great book!
- I only say that the review titled, "Some Fantastic Unknown Songs!" is inappropriate, because those are NOT the songs in this volume. I bought this volume thinking I would get the songs like "Moonfall" and "Unusual Way," but I didn't. This book is great don't get me wrong; I'll still get a lot out of it. Just don't read reviews thinking they are totally accurate.
- Even after a year of heafty exploring in the genre of musical theatre, I feel as though I have only brushed the first layer off and have dozens more to go. PErhaps this is why I can't appreciate this more. The book's not bad at all, I just don't know most of these songs!
HOwever, when it comes down to it, I have to say the arrangements here are FABULOUS! Songs from Phantom, Les Miz, and Jekyll and Hyde(all my favorites) are arranged well for solo performance, and my particular favorite "IN his Eyes", though it does not contain the gorgeous duet part or characters, makes it easy to pick and change to a solo piece. In fact the arrangement is ten times better than the actual song book version.
Overall, definitely a great book to own; highly recommended from a theatre geek!
- It's best to purchase all 3 of each anthology - I find Vol. 2 to be the best selection, but since each song is in the original key, it's a far cry from the pablum of typical "vocal selections" available. The only drawback - all the good audition pieces are showing up in these, and now everything's getting overused! :P

5 comments about The Psychology of the Sopranos: Love, Death, Desire and Betrayal in America's Favorite Gangster Family.
- Great fun read, even if you've never seen a single episode of The Sopranos...as in my case. I must declare my interest however - I am a psychiatrist in training.
One chapter of this book was suggested by a tutor for some light hearted reading to stimulate discussion in an informal tutorial we have for psychotherapy. It certainly did that, and some.
I am guessing this would also be fun reading for any lay reader who has a passing interest in psychychology or psychotherapy, but in particular for those who (also) have an interest in The Sopranos.
- This book is well written, but it is not much more than an extended newspaper article. Gabbard enjoys himself opening up some interesting lines of thought and giving an overview to the series. Well worth a look.
- This book handles the psychology aspect of the Sopranos which I find the most complelling. It highlights why the psychology in the Sopranos is more realistic than anything seen before and elevates the series to a higher level. There are many shows and movies about Italian-American mobsters. This one is very special and rises above most. The show has its own style and consciousness. Psychology of the Sopranos highlights that style and enlightens us furthur.
- Like most Sopranos fans, I don't start Monday morning at work until my colleagues and I have thoroughly analyzed the episode of the night before. We all have some psych in our background and the discussions are lively and, not surprisingly, clearly include individual projection. Now, an insightful book by a psychoanalyst! Pinch me! This is one of the panel of psychoanalysts who critiques and analyzes on "Slate" after each episode. He provides understanding to story lines and characters that were previously debatable; that is, if you accept that his analysis is the final word! And you may not always.
Why didn't Tony "get" the rapist? Now I know. Why are we all so drawn to this series? Writing is great, sure, but the reasons are much more complex and personal. The relationships are examined and illuminated. Lines and images I've forgotten are brought back, and with clarification. Subtle inclusion of references to classic movies and literature in the lines or settings are examined. Our fascination with Tony is explained in context to what we struggle with personally daily. I now have a logical understanding of why I like this obviously psychopatic killer mobster! My friends and I have a ritual of providing the best line of the night and we rarely mimic each other. The lines brought back in the book left a smile on my face. Some that I missed or forgot about were hilarious, and I even underlined passages. This book was a gift from a fellow "Sorpranoette," Courtney Conlin. It fascinated and captivated me. If you are a Sorpranos fan, and especially if you are into analyzing the plots and characters, if you have unanswered questions, if you strive to learn more about human motivations, and most of all your own, you will not be able to put this book down!
- Mafia don Soprano and his associates have captured more than 11 million viewers in the HBO TV hit series; but what makes the series so fascinating ý especially to psychoanalysts? The Psychology Of Sopranos provides an intriguing survey of the characters and attractions of the series, using the gangster family as a foundation for analyzing the American psyche and its fascination with death.

4 comments about Lolita: A Screenplay.
- Ok, I'll admit it, I am another Nabokovian and my curiosity was spurred when I found out VVN's screenplay was published by vintage. My real curiosity was in what kind of insight the screenplay could offer to VVN's original novel, and it did render some of that insight. This is a fun read, not as delightful as the novel by any stretch of the mind but it is still very delightful. What makes it so insightful is the fact that the screenplay is meant for view, not necessarily to be read, and using the points that Nabokov emphasizes in the explanations of the scenery, behaviorisms, and so forth, again are extremely helpful to anyone trying to get a better grasp of the novel. In working on a piece of criticism on VVN's earlier novel The Defense, I actually used the screenplay because the Annabelle Lee theme is emphasized more than in the novel and is easier to use in a critical study.
As a work of art, it is most certainly a great piece by itself, but to readers who are expecting this to be another masterwork like the novelized Lolita or Pale Fire, this pales in comparison.
- By his own account, only about 20% of Nabokov's 213 page screenplay ended up in Kubrick's film. Even so, the author's opinion of Kubrick's end product was high, and the screenplay itself is a fine cinematic representation of the novel.
- Lolita: a Screenplay is recommended reading for anyone who loved the novel and appreciates Nabokov's wonderful sense of humor. The story goes that Nabokov presented his screenplay to Kubrick, who told him, "Look, regardless of how brilliant it may or may not be, it would take eight hours to film." So it's unfilmable; if Borges can write literary criticism about books which don't exist, surely it's not so radical to devise screenplays which are never meant to be filmed. Nabokov adds much to his existing work, including a psychiatrist who speaks directly to the camera and a cameo for himself. One wishes that Adrian Lyne had added a few of the humorous elements of the screenplay to his film, which is fine but perhaps a bit too reverent which it should be audaciously funny. All in all, I highly recommend picking up what amounts to one of the 20th century's great geniuses playing hooky.
- Its not the book, and its not the film. So what is it? Its the screenplay of course! Chances are, if you are reading this, its either because you saw the film and liked it; a fan of Stanley Kubrick: director of the film; or you read the book Lolita and the Annotated Lolita and figured "I might as well read the script;" or just a big fan of Nabokov and its the one book you dont have in your collection. Whatever the reason may be, it falls between the book and the film. This is Nabokov's version of the script that was cut, recut and then edited by Kubrick (incidentally, Nabokov still recieved on-screen credit for the screenplay). It may hold water on its own, but in comparison to either the book or film it cannot stay afloat.

5 comments about Be a Clown!: The Complete Guide to Instant Clowning.
- This is a great book for clowns, starting or otherwise. Lots of interesting ideas that warrents plenty of rereading. I have read this over and over again at least six times, and each time, I pick up something new, with spin offs coming from his ideas. The book is written with a informal, easy going style that makes really easy reading too, and the clown nose that comes with the book is a fun perk, though peeling it off damages (Or at least, for me) the book. We've (Zephyhdom, a clown company in Singapore) has used many ideas from this book and have found it useful... I hope you will too!
- A very nice book - light, easily read, many photos, with a good insight to the mind & heart of a clown. This lively, humorous handbook covers all aspects of clownmanship, including makeup, funny faces, costume, and props. Encourages the reader to create a clown persona with many photos and suggestions. Several getting-started routines are included. Written by the towering Turk Pipkin, a 6' 7" professional clown. Includes plastic clown nose. The more I read it, the more I like it.
- This is a great book to begin with but I am just starting out and don't see this book as being the only book for me. This book is, however, very well written and easy to understand.
- i am a kid who is thinking about being a clown i have been buying almost every book on the subject. this is a good book to teach you the fundementals of clowning but dosen't cover what it takes to be a real clown
- Encourages the reader to create a clown persona with many photos and suggestions. Several getting-started routines are included. MISSING: he makes wonderful suggestions about creating a flea circus routine but just try to find a book or resource about THAT. It left me wanting MORE!

5 comments about Film: An Introduction.
- This is an older edition of one of the greatest film books ever written. This book is massive and helpful. Gives insight to hundreds of different film concepts, acknowledges countless incredible films, and jump starts your brain's creative and analytical film knowledge. Great buy!
-Dr. Kenneth
- An outstanding beginning text for film study students. I am a film study and English teacher at the high school level, and I have been using this text for the past two years. The first four chapters provide essential terminology to effectively read and analyze a film. From mise-en-scene to cinematography to editing to sound, these first four chapters develop a solid foundation for beginning film students. The book provides classic film examples, both early classics and modern classics, and there are numerous examples of shots from these films to illustrate film terminology. The second half of the book provides some meaningful discussion of film genres, the context of film in society, and alternatives to live-action films. As a beginning resource, this text is user-friendly and interesting. I highly recommend this textbook for the beginning film study student.
- FILM by William H. Phillips has as its strongest point its relevancy to current events in light of past film endeavors. Recent films are discussed in the 3rd Edition as well as other editions with clarity and insight. Also, it is a rare film book that discusses the economics of film making and marketing of film in theaters and video formatting.
This work shows that other countries than the US also have an important cinematic history. This book encompasses both the American scene and the world historical perspective with its extensive chronology 1895-2003, and the relationship and mirroring of world events in film. This is a book to add to any collection of film reference guides. It is prime value for the money with 669 pages of prolific color plates and black and white photos of actual film shots.
- I've taken a couple film classes in college so far and I have to say that this book is not very enlightening. For the most part, this book discusses film concepts and assigns them terms. It spends a lot of time stating the obvious and little time going into any significant depth.
It is a long book full of general information that you will already know if you are a regular movie-goer, nevermind a student of film. It lacks significant coverage of the history of film.
I recommend avoiding it if you can and buying an inexpensive used copy if you must buy it for class.
You can learn far more about film simply by using Google or Wikipedia. The freely available information on the Internet far surpasses the mediocre offerings of this book! Don't waste your money!
- Phillips has written an accessible, up-to-date, and lively book suitable for anyone who wants a basic understanding of the art of film. It is arranged so that a discussion of film techniques is first, liberally illustrated with shots from numerous films (including newer releases). One of the nice features of the book is it identifies and points out the differences between publicity stills and frame enlargments. The rest of the book discusses how movies are developed, their sources, genres, and characteristics. There is a detailed chapter on alternatives to live-action films (especially focused on animation). The book's final section addresses the social meanings of films, and provides a sample analysis of Altman's "The Player." Throughout the text are sample student papers, to demonstrate how to write about film in a critical way. In the introductory film appreciation class that I teach, students preferred this book to Bordwell and Thompson's "Film Art." For them, all the examples and photographs enhanced the concepts, while the marginal definitions helped them remember key terms. Students also appreciated the inclusion of recent movies they have seen, as well as classics like "Citizen Kane." From this college professor's point of view, the book is best for beginners, who just want to know more about film techniques and analysis. However, even advanced students would find it a useful summary of film concepts.
