3 comments about Collector's Compass: Movie Collectibles.

  1. Including the index, this book is only 128 pages long. What is included in its pages is valuable information for anyone beginning to collect movie memorabilia including posters, stills, glass slides, toys, kitsch, and ephemera. It is filled with photographs in both black and white through the pages and color in the insert and selling prices of some of the most valuable items. It also includes some historical information about the origins of the types of collectables as well as preservation information, how to spot fakes, and where to obtain real collectables.

This book is not exclusive to collectors, but is better suited to those wishing to begin a collection or simply interested in movie memorabilia. Because of its brevity, it is probably not the best resource for experienced collectors.

  2. This is a great book for beginners who are thinking of delving into the field of movie memorabilia. It provides an overview of the market and many "inside tips" for collectors. Best of all, the book isn't just about movie posters. It covers collectibles from all aspects of the film business, from press kits to kitsch, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Don't miss it!

  3. Nothing original or exceptionally knowlegable about this book. Just your usual "care and feeding" of movie posters, lobby cards and photos that's been done to death for years. All other types of movie memorabilia are, as usual, neglected. Author seems obsessed with the $400,000+ sale of a particular poster at auction as he mentions it several times in the book. He also uses the recent on-line auction "craze" as an attempt to make a tired book seem fresh and topical.

  1. I found this book okay-okay. The pictures were great and the descriptions were good but the choice is not so good. I expected a little bit more from this book. Like 20 more toys wouldn't hurt.

2 comments about Everything You Need to Know About Star Wars Collectibles.

  1. I purchased Semling's book based on the quality of his website, "Brians Toys." If you are new to collecting Star Wars, I recommed this book. If you already know the basics, you may want to look elsewhere. The book has large quality photographs, but the writing is at about a highschool level.

  2. This is a very good and imformative book....It's a must for any collector! Very well written and easy to navigate.

2 comments about Goldmine Standard Catalog of American Records 1950-1975.

  1. What a letdown! While this book purports to cover the period 1950-1975, I was sadly disappointed to find that it completely omits one of the most important musical influences of that period, DON COSTA, who was a noted arranger-conductor, master of the 12-string guitar, a performer in his own right, and a man who influenced the careers of many well-known performers like Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Johnny Mathis, Ferrante & Teicher, Paul Anka, and the list goes on. Don Costa's fabulous arrangements have appeared on labels such as ABC-Paramount, Columbia, Mercury, United-Artists, and his own label, DCP-International. Don Costa was a true musical genius and as such, he was hired to be the musical director of a major Boston, MA radio station when he was only 15 years old!... One can only wonder what other important performers or facts were left-out of this book, and such omissions only serve to cast doubt on the seriousness of the data that did manage to find a place between the covers of this publication!

  2. This is one of the best price guide books for American records. Due to its detailed information and clearly organized listings, it surpasses all previous publications in its scope and usefulness. It adds artists not previously mentioned in past price guides but does omit artists on a somewhat arbitrary basis. Why Getz and not Gillespie etc.? For the artists it does include, much hard work is reflected in the thorough discographies which list reissue information and pressing chronology with great accuracy. Obscure artists with limited product are, as is common with books of this type, omitted. For the money, this is the best book. Only Osborne's Rockin Records covers more ground, but in less essential detail.

3 comments about Ken Hom: Travels with a Hot Wok.

  1. The recipes are first-rate. I do a lot of "real" Asian cooking, and I find Hom's recipes a fabulous blend of "western" style cooking fused with "Asian" combinations of ingredients. Each recipe I've tried is straightforward with easy-to-follow directions, easy-to-find ingredients, and produces supreme results. My children, who often turn up their noses at Asian food, really like everything I've tried out of this book.
The only reason why I didn't give this cookbook 5 stars are because there are a few editorial errors in it. I believe there's a new edition out -- I'd try that one first to see if the errors are fixed -- mostly dealing with page numbers not matching in the front explanatory section of the book.

  2. Ken Hom was born in USA of Chinese parents. He is, quite rightly, regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on Chinese cooking. Living now, in France, Ken Hom has written extensively, describing his recipes and techniques. In Travels with a Hot Wok, he presents 160 recipes with a unique blend of West and East - easy to prepare dishes from around the world, as presented on his BBC television series.

But more than just a collection of recipes, Travels with a Hot Wok covers equipment, ingredients, cooking techniques, and basic cooking knowledge. Of utmost importance, the 'equipment' section includes how to choose a wok, what size is best, how to season it and clean it. His recipes are divided into eight sections that cover appetizers, soups, fish and shellfish, meat, poultry, vegetables, rice noodles and pasta, and finally even desserts (yes, you can prepare some amazing desserts in a wok). And what a mouth-watering selection of recipes they are. Though Ken Hom obviously uses ingredients that are adventurous, they are all readily available at good Asian supermarkets or delicatesans, so there's no need to fear that the basic ingredients are hard to get.

If you've never ventured into wok cooking, now's your chance. The amazing mixture of flavours and taste represent a whole new world, and who better to present them and explain them than the Master himself. You'll be surprising your guests in no time at all, and, once used, you'll never fear a wok again.

  3. It is the best Chinese recipe book I ever possessed. It's divided in sections so that you can find any course of your dinner easily. He is incredible cause he creates simple dishes in a short time from which you can surprise your guests and prove yourself an excellent cook. It also contains a good ingredient vocabulary which will surely make it easier for you to learn about new greens.

1 comments about House of Collectibles Price Guide to Star Wars Collectibles: 4th edition (Official Price Guide to Star Wars Collectibles).

  1. It is a great book but this is 2000 and it was released in 1998. Since then there has been a great number of additions to the Star Wars Collectibles universe and the problem with this book along with any other book / price guide is usually as soon as you get it the prices have changed and numerous items have been released. For referance it is a good book just dated.

2 comments about Film & TV Animal Star Collectibles.

  1. There are plenty of books about movie collectibles, and some about animal collectibles; but this is the only book that combines the two. It's an excellent resource, and even if you don't plan of collecting the items shown it is fascinting to see all the little promo items put out over the years. This book would make a really unique gift for animal lovers and movie lovers.

    Staci Layne Wilson

  2. This softcover 208 page volume has more than 300 large, sharp, full color photos and over 150 black and white photos. This is the first book to pay tribute to the animal stars we all remember and continue to enjoy. There's plenty of background information about each "star." Major topics include Rin Tin Tin, Lassie, Silver, Smokey the Bear, Flipper, Benjii, Babe, Wishbone and all of the great Disney animal stars. Every type of animal star collectible is shown, described and priced, including books, records, ads, pins, movie posters, lunch boxes, toys, stuffed animals, clothing, trays, cameras, etc, etc, etc. You'll be amazed at the number of items that were made. If you're interested in this topic, add the book to your library. A delightful and useful memory jogger and collector's aid.
