3 comments about The Watercolor Landscape Techniques of 23 International Artists.
- If you wish to have a book showing you different artist's work then you will love this book, but if you buy it as a beginner artist to aid you in your quest, do not waste your money.
I bought the 'Watercolour Skies' by International artists, and that was a great book with step by step demonstrations by each artist, this was the reason I ordered this book, but was a very disappointed....don't get me wrong the book is nice to browse through....but if you are wanting it for a teaching guide...forget it!
- If you are new to watercolor, or a watercolor artist looking for new ideas to shake up your work, this is quite an inspiring book. Landscape painting is a tremendous challenge to begin with, and watercolor can both be an excellent and incredibly difficult medium to attempt in landscape. This book shows how 23 artists with very different styles and methods tackle the subject.
Each chapter presents a different artist's work, including several completed paintings and comments from the artist on his or her approach. "Art in the Making" examples in each chapter then show how each artist creates their images, sometimes in very specific detail including colors used, brushes, papers, and step-by-step illustrations. All images are in full color. The artists' styles range from highly detailed realism to more abstract and spontaneous work. I might not like the work of each person included in this volume, but nearly everyone presents ideas that are worth considering or trying out at some point.
While this book alone may not make someone a world-famous landscape painter, it can certainly help provide inspiration and make a challenging genre more approachable.
- I am new to watercolor painting, and I found this book to be the perfect medium between advice and inspiration. Each artist has a page of examples of their paintings, advice about painting (watercolor), and a step by step painting with explanations and photos all along. This book is full of different watercolor styles that are all inspiring. I look through this book for ideas, for a reminder that anyone can paint watercolors, and for style tips. I highly recommend this book.

5 comments about Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting.
- This is not a product review. This is a money saving review. While researching this book I found that you can buy it directly from the author. Hardback: $95, Paperback: $50. Just Google his name or the name of the book. The one star rating refers to the price others are charging for this book.
- Everything I know about painting? Well, not exactly, not everything. Don't expect to learn everything. Many reviewer on this book maybe expected too much. This is not a step by step painting book. This book does not show you the magical short cut to become a better painter either. But this is the best and only book you'll ever need in painting. I've never seen any book or any artist that explains better in terms of Edges, Values and Colors. The most important 3 ingredients of painting. His teachings on these 3 ingredients are so easy to understand and if you apply them to your work.... you're much better artist/painter already. Invaluable information on chapter 4, 5 and 6. This book will change the everything you know about painting.... well... not exactly.
- This is a great book which I refer to repeatedly. BUT, I bought it used at Amazon for a rip-off price. Lots of people are complaining about the high price, so do yourself a favor and google his name to go to his web-site. Much cheaper there!
- First off, I can't believe that I payed more than US$140 for this book, especially when it only 204 pages, with 118 plates - I feel like I've been taken advantage of. There is no dobut that Richard Schmid is an excellent painter but I fail to see why this book has had such rave reviews over the years. The advice that you get in this book is no better than I had during my 1st year of art school and for the price tag that this book commands I expected a whole lot more. My advice is to have a good look at this book before you consider buying it. Me, I think it's a total waste of money and I can't recommend it, unless you have money to burn.
- If you look around you can find this book for a much lower price.
There is a paperback version of this book for a much better price.

3 comments about Cezanne : A Biography.
- Rewald's biography of Cezanne is a very fine piece of work. It is beautifully written with substantial information about the artist & his work. As for all reputable art books, the paper quality is very good to render lovely reproductions of the paintings.
It is very nicely presented & a pleasure to read. . . or just look at the paintings.
- I have read many books on Cezanne over the past 10 years and in my opinion this is the best. For a combination of well-written text and excellent reproductions of the paintings this book cannot be beat. The text is jargon free. Mr. Rewald was a wonderful writer and he gives you a warm and sympathetic biography of a great artist and complex and difficult man. Cezanne was very neurotic. He had a fear of women and would not use nude models. His famous bather series was worked up from photographs and plaster casts, etc. He could be very anti-social: he sometimes would cross the street to avoid meeting someone he knew. He was very emotional and struggled to keep his emotions under control. This was reflected in his work. His early work was full of violence and shadows and you feel as though he barely was able to keep himself in check as he coated the canvas in a thick impasto. The later, carefully controlled and beautifully harmonized works are the more familiar to the general public. The cover gives you some indication of the beautiful reproductions which are inside this book. This is a great addition and in my opinion a must have for anyone's art library.
- I really enjoyed this wonderful book about a wonderfully delightful artist. I would recommend reading it if you are a Cezanne admirer, absolutely a wonderful book!
