2 comments about Veronese: Gods, Heroes, and Allegories.

  1. This art book of Veronese is very beautiful, and the price is reasonble. I enjoy many pictures with intelligible description of his life and work.

  2. This book is a tremendous disappointment. The Veronese works featured in this book are based on a Musee de Luxembourg exhibition. The paintings featured in the exhibition were secondary works that do not reflect the great artist's mastery of color and form. Many of the works featured in the show demonstrate Veronese's debt to Titian, Tintoretto and Parmigianino, but reflect little of the artist's innate brilliance. The text accompanying the artworks provides little insight into the works' creation or provenance. Unless the purchaser is an ardent devotee of Veronese or an art historian, I strongly advise against purchasing this work.

2 comments about Bev Doolittle: New Magic.

  1. Finally getting around to writing a review on Bev Doolittle's books; this one and and her other book from 1990,"The Art of Bev Dolittle".Two of my major intrests are Birding(and Nature) and virtually any kind of puzzle (Optical Illusion,Mazes,Take Apart,Rubik's,Mathematical Puzzles, etc.)I also am fascinated with the West and have spent time in New Mexico,Arizona and California;birding and travelling. The Wild West, Cowboys and Indian cultures all intrest me,provide me with many books for reading, photos and art.
So,you would think Sue's work would be right down my alley--you bet;it is!
She creates images that astound me.They are not just simple hidden pictures but also have great mood.,feeling and inspiration. She has that uncanny ability to create an image that you can grasp in an instant as well as study for a long time.Other artists do this;but none do it better.
I look for her work in every art store I see and hopefully we'll see another book soon.
In the meantime I must get to work an the 750 piece Jigsaw puzzle of "Many Eagles"(pg.41) I recently bought.
Now there's an Indian,Nature,Western Bird,Hidden Image ,Inspirational PUZZLE for you.
    Thanks,Bev

1 comments about Water Media Techniques.

  1. If you're interested in learning about watermedia, a term used to include watercolors, gouache (opaque watercolors), casein (a paint based on milk protein), and acrylics, I highly recommend this excellent book. No, it's not the newest book on the subject, and yes, a lot of the illustrations are in black and white, but the graphics are basically very good and the information supplied even better. This is especially true for qouache and casein, which never seem to get much attention in books.

Quiller gives good, in-depth information about each of these media, as well as a series of exercises to develop one's skills in working with them, and plenty of illustrations of his own work, including works in progress, which showcase the versatility of these paints.

This definitely is a book you should have if you're interested in watermedia. Also recommended are Quiller's other books on color theory and acrylics...these are newer and have all-color images, and will get you thinking in different ways about color. The art is colorful, vibrant, and creative, and certain to inspire you.

1 comments about Complete Art Foundation Course: Drawing, Watercolor, Oils and Acrylics (Foundation Course S.).

  1. I love it. I'm doing a beginner drawing course and the book answers all my questions concerning drawing and painting. Every illustration is relevant and useful, the text is informative, simple, entertaining and practical at the same time. The layout and the quality of the book itself is very good. It was the perfect choice for me.

1 comments about Stories: Eleven Aboriginal Artists (Art & Australia Monograph.).

  1. I have not read the book. I am actually looking for a book of Albert Namantjura's (this might be spelled wrong) paintings. He was a very popular Aboriginal artist back in the 1950's in Australia. I believe he used watercolor, but I am not certain. Can anyone advise me on where I can get a book of his paintings?

4 comments about Norman Rockwell.

  1. Perhaps more than any other contemporary artist Norman Rockwell enjoys popular mass appeal with his warm scenes of Americana. His Saturday Evening Post covers, which he created for more than four decades, enchanted a generation, as he painted his particular visions of daily life.

His work bespeaks timeless values and tolerance, so much so that one of his ads was borrowed by an AIDS activist group to promote safe-sex awareness. What would Rockwell himself have thought of this? His son, Tom, said, "One of the things my father was associated with was tolerance. So I think it's fairly easy to know what he would have said."

  2. The work shows important illustrations for the Saturday Evening
Post, his wedding and the Art Director's Club. Famous illustrations; such as, the New Tavern Sign are depicted. An
illustration of "A Family Tree" is presented in full color
together with other famous renditions of the artist. The Spirit
of Education and the Airplane Trip are presented in full color.
These were famous presentations in the Saturday Evening Post of
the 1930s. There is a famous Christmas illustration from 1929
and the "Dreams of Chivalry". The famous "Golden Rule" is
presented together with "The Prom Dress" and "The Outing".
This is an important work for ownership by anyone interested
in the modern artwork of the previous century.

  3. I thought this book of Norman Rockwell's work was a fascinatining look into the typical/almost idealistic life of everyday embarrassing/comical/poignant situations which do commonly occur. The picture I enjoyed the most was "The Gossips" where upon I could imagine the tale behind the laughter and enjoy looking at the different facial expressions and that there was such a great twist to the tale. Thank you for such a great book!.

  4. The book is small, but the illustrations still are reproduced extremely well. The essay alone is worth every penny. If you feel uneasy about your love for the work of Norman Rockwell, this book will give you the courage to like what you really like, without any more appologies. Buy it, read it, enjoy. You will, I guarantee.

2 comments about Images of Power: Balinese Paintings Made for Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead.

  1. I am Balinese and enjoyed this book. It is a catalogue of Margaret Mead's and her husband Gregory Bateson's collection of paintings. They were in Bali off and on throughout the Thirties.

Batuan is a village in Central Bali, which is not far from my own village of Ubud. They are both artists' villages, but the painting styles are very different. Ubud has attracted a lot of foreigners, who have influenced the local artists. This was not the case with the painters in Batuan, who developed their own style.

Professor Hildred Geertz is a renowned anthropologist, who writes well, and explains the stories behind these paintings, which would otherwise be rather hard to follow. I think that some of the points she mentions are original and interesting.

Most of the painters are profiled with a short biography. Margaret Mead and Gregory Bates interviewed the painters and made notes. Some are charming and very personal, like the fact that Ida Bagus Made had been to a movie once.

    Recommended.

  2. This is a definitive and well written book on Balinese paintings from the village of Batuan. This book serves as the exhibition catalog for the Batuan Painting exhibition from the collection of Bateson and Mead. Prof. Geertz illusively decribed the relationship between the Balinese culture, tradition and myth, the western influence and the development of Balinese Paintings. Highly recommended for the patrons and the students of Balinese Painting

1 comments about Petrus Christus Renaissance Master of Bruges.

  1. Thank you Maryan Ainsworth for this wonderful comprehensive text on Petrus Christus, the "most minor of the major masters" of the Northern Renaissance. He is often overshadowed by Jan van Eyck, and this book allows Christus to shine in his own right.
