5 comments about The North Light Illustrated Book of Painting Techniques.

  1. This is full of lots of pictures and great for a student of painting. They cover everything. You will love it and use it!

  2. I too checked this out of the library first and then went on to buy it. This book is well organized and will introduce you to various techniques that you can work up on your own or go forward and do more research on. It is the kind of reference book that will allow you the knowledge that a paticular technique is available when you otherwise might not even have known about it....This will sit right next to my How To on leaves, flowers, animals, pen....and I would recommend to others also. Every page has a creative idea that will push you onward to better creations. I am glad I bought it.

  3. This art book is good for everyone. It covers all sorts of art problems that you might be having. Visually it is a beautiful book. I highly recommend it to artists of any level.

  4. The book is useful in the sense of being a quick resource to learn about (or recall) painting techniques. Lets say you hear or are told about an specific technique for your painting. You will find about it right away. Do you have doubts about the generals of a technique? Check it on the book.

The drawbacks of this book are that the author does not go deep into some techniques and If you are trying to find a book to guide you or to give you a sense of an specific medium (pastels, oil or acrilycs) it is better to look for other book since it is going to be a cumbersome task to do it in this book the techniques are ordered alfabetically, not by medium. So, lets say that you are interested specifically in pastels. Then you will have to skip trough al the pages in order to find all the techniques that may apply to pastels.

  5. Great book for techniques in mixed media. I have to admit i checked this one out at the library first and realized when it was a month overdue and i was still having problems returning it that i should just buy the book. Tate gives great ideas on different effects that you can acheive while painting etc... but i was also hoping for some more actual finished product examples where she illustrated the ideas presented. It didn't hinder the wonderful inspiration and ideas too badly, but it'd be nice to see more of the final works- or different ways you can incorporate the uses shown. I use this book all the time when questions arise or i just want something cool to inspire me.

4 comments about Frederic Remington Art Museum Collection.

  1. A fantastic pictorial record of history, giving a flavour of the atmosphere surrounding events that complements contemporary sources and academic writing on the times.

  2. I have long been a fan of Remington's work. This book presented new material on both his work and on his life. I was impressed with the details presented in this book. I only wish there were even more samples of his work included in the book. I would have then given it a rating of 5 stars.

  3. bad reproductions of colour "sketches" by the artist-sadly his best work was not present.

  4. I recently purchased this book for my husband. The book is fascinating and traces the history of Remington's art. I had no idea the vast body of work created by this talented artist. The book clearly details many facts and interesting tidbits. The picture plates are wonderful. Fabulous book!

2 comments about Webb on Watercolor.

  1. Webb is a natural teacher who is easy to follow from basic concepts to complex compositions. He has an innate ability to take painting beyond capturing likeness to how the subject is structured or feels. His book would be helped by more step-by-step sequences for technique or process analysis. Thanks Frank for a great reference book. Two thumbs up from Totino and Busby.

  2. If you're looking for a general purpose, intelligent and informed book on watercolor, this is it. Webb -- formerly an illustrator/graphic artist -- has designed chapters on motivation, materials, setup, color and values, techniques, composition, design, all illustrated by examples painted by other top painters as well as himself. This is accompanied by pithy, appropriate one-liners quoted from philosophers, artists -- whoever his incredible memory finds the most apt. He encourages painters to experiment, take risks -- after learning the necessary first. As a watercolor instructor, and author of a book on outdoor landscape painting in watercolor, I recommend Frank Webb's two books, Nita Leland's book on color, and David Lewis' "Watercolour Painting Techniques." That's all you need for starters.

  1. While the text provides some interesting information all the art work is in mostly poor black & white images. The book is a major disappointment.

2 comments about Monet's House: An Impressionistic Interior.

  1. I ordered the copy of Monets house and inadvertently entered the wrong address. The shipper kept me updated and sent me the book as soon as the post office returned it to them. I was very impressed with the service of the bookseller.

  2. The impressionist master,Monet's home represents a palette of vibrant color harmonies, and light fused into a radiant home of personal warmth and beauty. A perfect setting for the lush gardens flourishing outside. A full view of the rooms, that made Monet's house truly an artists abode with its elegant, yet simple furnishings.

1 comments about Classic Glass Painting: Inspirations from the past.

  1. This is a wonderful introduction to the basics of glass painting. Color photo and step-by-step instructions help guide you through a wide variety of techniques.

The book starts out by quickly demonstrating many basic techniques as well as covering safety & materials. Some techniques include outlining, marbling, blending, adding gems, frosting, gilding, & using a self-adhesive lead or gel.

There are many great multi-cultural projects for learning each technique. These include an Asian floral plate, Tiffany window panel, Celtic knotwork frame, Victorian rose bowl, Egyptian bookmark, & a mosaic box.

Templates accompany each project. There are a few extra templates given for each style as well. Though it may take some practice to create a masterpiece, this is definitely the book to get you there.

2 comments about Copper as Canvas: Two Centuries of Masterpiece Paintings on Copper, 1575-1775.

  1. This book is one of my favorites in my extensive art history collection. Komanecky is an excellent writer and alothough the pictures don't give justice to the real thing, they are still vibrant. The layout of the book makes it easy to follow, and the author describes everything in detail, and even goes so far as to describe copper in general. Very impressive book and I highly recommend it!

  2. Catalogues of this kind serve the noble purpose of casting light upon obscure or uncharted areas of art history. Imagine a perfectly vivid Rembrandt , about the size of a three by five card, painted with the full talents of that great master. This perfectly preserved masterwork, as well as works by El Greco, Frans Hals, Murillo and lesser well known artists make up the superb exhibition documented in this complete catalogue. The only drawback to this book is that the color reproduction of the paintings is yellowish, murky and occasionally even flipped! I would have given it the coveted fifth star , except that in presenting such works of miraculous detail and perfection, only perfect reproductions will do.
