1 comments about Icons of American Protestantism: The Art of Warner Sallman.

  1. Most children of Protestant families, like myself, are probably familiar with Warner Sallman's "Head of Christ" and have seen it many times. However, Morgan and his fellow authors give us a reason to actually look at Sallman's work. They debunk the myth that Protestant privelage of the word has brought forth no visual culture and that popular visual piety has no place in scholarship. The writings in this book give the reader a clearer picture of Protestant immigrant visual piety and a man named Warner Sallman, who created a Jesus Christ Superstar for a conservative Christian movie era audience.

  1. Your porduct was passable but rather steep a price to pay for a
struggling artist. Delivery was very prompt and all kudos to
    Amazon .com for that.

  2. This book is great for the begginner in acrylic painting.

4 comments about Richard Schmid Paints Landscapes.

  1. I rarely posts reviews but felt obliged to add one here to clarify the value of this book. I own Schmid's "Alla Prima" (which is excellent) and have also enjoyed many of his DVDs.

I was pleasantly surprised when this book arrived because it also excellent, but in a different vein then "Alla Prima". For one, this book predates the other by several decades so naturally the color pages are going to be fewer. This book is dense with the nuts & bolts of Richard Schmid's approach to the landscape. There is much more rudimentary (but not basic) information here that was not appropriate for the higher level approach of "Alla Prima". Plus there are many more examples. So what if they're black & white. The text that accompanies them, with Richard's insights to each painting, is worth it.

So buy "Alla Prima" and watch some of his DVDs to acquire an appreciation to Richard Schmid's approach to painting and to also whet your artistic appetite for more. And once you are hungry for more, buy this landscape book to "savor" his painting instruction.

  2. Some photos are black and white but there are many demo photos are in color. This is quite a substantial book for its genre; the author is very generous with his considerable knowledge, and I recommend it for serious landscape painters. It may be a little too technical for beginners and casual hobbyists.

  3. Richard Schmid's newer book Alla Prima is much better. Try to find the Paints Landscapes in a library - its not worth paying over 200 dollars for. Paints landscapes has mostly black and white pictures which shows how dated the book is. Check out his website for the really good videos also.

  4. I stumbled upon this book in a library and knew I had to own it so I could study each and every word. Richard Schmid paints landscapes like no one else! (If you don't beleve me check out his website and you will buy this book! ) My paintings improved immediately! I take it with me when I paint now! He gives clear steb by step guides but this book is clearly above and beyond a "how to paint landscapes" book. I'm now saving my "starving artist" pennies to buy his "Alla Prima" book!

5 comments about Jerry Garcia: The Collected Artwork.

  1. This is a nice book to own if you want to understand another side of Jerry Garcia, his artistic skills through blissful colors and scenes. Bought this used book for real low price and find his art pretty damn good, a definetive style he creates.

  2. My dad is a bigtime deadhead, so I am always searching for unique dead-related gifts for him. Well, he loved this book of Jerry's art, and said he'd had no idea how prolific he was. Sure to please the true Jerry lover in your life.

  3. The diversity and accumulation of art pieces in this book is extensive and includes a variety of media representations, including early and late drawings, water colors and gouche, accrylics, and digital works that are for more than just for "dead heads." I personally was never a "dead head." Myself I was more inclined to some of other musical projects like the fine countryesque CD entitled Grisman & Garcia which was a fine collaboration or the jazzy So What which was Miles Davis inspired. Back to the book, the body of work includes exhibitions as well other contributions to popular culture like Ben & Jerry's: The Inside Scoop: How Two Real Guys Built a Business with a Social Conscience and a Sense of Humor where the authors detail the influence of Jerry Garcia on their now famous ice cream and, of course, Garcia ties that are ever so popular in the bay area. Some of the works recall the art of GoyaGoya: The Complete Etchings and Lithographs (Art & Design) and Picasso, especially his etchings and drawings. His early drawings reveals an underlying talent influenced by Mad Classics with a yet to be developed style but budding for expression and growth like a plant coming through the earth reaching for the sun. The art works goes from sublime to macabre, spacey and surreal to life like earthy pieces. Some of the contemporary works he produced digitally are modern "Shamanic Vibrations" as the essay indicates that leads into this particular ending chapter. The essays are well written homages to a man of many talents who emerged from the California scene of the 60's to leave a tremendous legacy. I really enjoyed the essays that were contributed to this book by a variety of boheminan artists and such like people that encountered Jerry Garcia while he walked this earth. This is an interesting table top book that is colorful and a great addition to any library or home collection of art books.

  4. Jerry Garcia is as talented an artist as he is a musician. This book shows his full talents as an artist.

  5. My future daughter-in-law had a very short wish list for Christmas. This was on the list with a note that said, "You probably won't be able to find this anywhere because I have been unable to locate it." Well, thanks to Amazon I was able to get her this book and just in time for Christmas wrapping!
Thanks for quick shipping... I'm truly Grateful!!!

1 comments about Robert Mangold.

  1. This is a wonderful book--easily the best book on Robert Mangold available. Beautiful color images of paintings from across Mangold's career (up to 1999), along with images of Mangold's drawings and preparatory studies, make this worth the price alone. But there's also a fascinating set of essays (by Richard Schiff, Robert Storr and Arthur C. Danto), an entertaining interview between Robert Mangold and his wife, artist Sylvia Plimack Mangold, a comprehensive bibliography and chronology (often including images of gallery catalogues, promotional materials and such) and an interesting set of images of the work of other artists somehow related to Mangold. (Not much on Mangold's prints, alas, but this was evidently written before the appearance of the limited edition catalogue raisonne of the prints.) Mangold is one of the best abstract artists of our time, and this is a book that does him justice.

The book is beautifully designed too: clean, attractive layout inside and a simple cloth cover inlaid with a printed paper reproduction of one of Mangold's paintings, all protected by a mylar jacket. I know a paperback edition is promised for Fall '04, but unless it has updates or new material, the hardback is worth the extra money just for the sumptuous presentation.

5 comments about Darkwerks: The Art of Brom.

  1. I saw this book in a store yesterday. The title, Darkwërks was what first caught my eye. So I picked it up, looked at the covers, back and front, and began to flip through the first pages. I was amused very much by the art created by Brom in his earlier years. For instance, when he was age 6, he drew quite a bloody scene; a body riddled with knives and sharp objects. So, I started to look through the pages. Immediately, I was captivated by his morbidity and uniqueness. The graphic beauty of each picture shot into my eyes and made my heart quicken. I had only planned to glance through the book, but within seconds I had become a slave to each work of art.

While definitely not for the....."Normal" person, anyone who loves the morbid and macabre will love this book with all their heart and soul. Beautiful, beautiful blood and violence. Femme nikita, freaks of nature, tortured souls and Dark Angels fill the pages of this magnificent masterpiece. BUY IT NOW!!! Hah...

  2. Just pop in some FrontLine Assembly, VNV Nation, Funker Vogt, and Apoptygma Berserk mp3s, and browse through this amazing collection of sci fi/fantasy artwork from the master known simply as Brom. Large, crisp, full-color photos of his amazing paintings grace this informative book. See sketches for some of his paintings in the margins, and view his talented early sketches from age 5, 11, and 20 years of age.

  3. Brom is the most amazing artist in the Fantasy genre. This book is a great buy if you love Fantasy art and you want to see a true master. Forget Frazetta, forget Vallejo, Brom is the one. This book portrays Brom's art to it's fullest. Beautiful, full color prints adorn every page, showing off Brom's masterful talent and attention to detail. Don't miss out on this one or it's sequal 'Offerings'.

  4. If you like to draw, like great art works, sci-fi, well fantasy art this book is for you. Brom his a great artist, very talented, his art book got lot of nice to weird art works. It had been a while since I search for a great fantasy art book and this one is the best I saw so far!

  5. Brom is a fantasy artist who is best known for his work on his work Dark Sun, Deadlands, collectable card games, and book covers. He stands out from Boris & Julie as well as Frank Franzetta partially for the sole reason that most of (though not all) of his portraits contain people who wear clothing, albeit usually something fetish inspired, leather and latex. He has a very distinct style, painting very beautiful moon-skinned redheads and tan wild-elven creatures, which stand along detailed landscapes that insipre the imagination. Some of his work is disturbing (though not quite as disturbing as H.R. Geiger), and mostly very dark (what would you expect from a man who listens to Nick Cave while he paints?) but all of his work is remarkably well composed and masterfully detailed.
Brom has a larger influence than many people realize, for example the evil albino in the recently released movie Time Machine could very well have come directy from the pages of Darkwerks. To get an idea of how popular Brom has become, just type in his name in any search engine (Google works best). Darkwerks is a very good collection of his art, containing very little text and allowing all of the pages to be showcased in full-sized, full-colored glory.

3 comments about Chinese Brush Painting: A Hands-On Introduction to the Traditional Art.

  1. Chinese brush art is a special way of painting that uses ink, paper and imagination to create art, and beginners now have access to this thousand-year-old art form through a step-by-step guide that closely follows traditional Chinese methods. From simple materials painting traditional subjects with imagination, this is an excellent starting point recommended for any library where introductory painting in general is of interest, and Chinese art in particular is a focus.

    Diane C. Donovan
    California Bookwatch

  2. Chinese Brush Painting is not well known by western artists. This book gives the new reader an exceptional grounding in the theroy and practice of a painting style that combines delicacy and spirtual context seldom found in western art forms. The authors present a wide variety of illustrations and work practice to discover the depth of methodology and meaning in this thousand year old art style.

  3. No matter what age or skill level you have achieved, you will not be disappointed. From the graceful beauty of the artwork within to each carefully worded, easily understood step that guides, this extraordinary journey is a well worth anyone's time. This book peels back the layers, revealing the soul of this elegant art and its tools. By understanding the philosophy, point of view, and choice of tools, I know that I will never view another piece of Chinese brush painting in any museum the same way. This book has opened the door for me to not only learn to create, but forever appreciate this ancient art form in all its elegant grace, beauty, and meaning.

  1. If you are looking for a great calendar, I suggest you make your own with the illustrations from this book. I don't know why it was listed in Calendars ... it isn't one. But I can't complain. Otherwise I might never have found it.
