5 comments about The North Light Illustrated Book of Painting Techniques.

  1. This is full of lots of pictures and great for a student of painting. They cover everything. You will love it and use it!

  2. I too checked this out of the library first and then went on to buy it. This book is well organized and will introduce you to various techniques that you can work up on your own or go forward and do more research on. It is the kind of reference book that will allow you the knowledge that a paticular technique is available when you otherwise might not even have known about it....This will sit right next to my How To on leaves, flowers, animals, pen....and I would recommend to others also. Every page has a creative idea that will push you onward to better creations. I am glad I bought it.

  3. This art book is good for everyone. It covers all sorts of art problems that you might be having. Visually it is a beautiful book. I highly recommend it to artists of any level.

  4. The book is useful in the sense of being a quick resource to learn about (or recall) painting techniques. Lets say you hear or are told about an specific technique for your painting. You will find about it right away. Do you have doubts about the generals of a technique? Check it on the book.

The drawbacks of this book are that the author does not go deep into some techniques and If you are trying to find a book to guide you or to give you a sense of an specific medium (pastels, oil or acrilycs) it is better to look for other book since it is going to be a cumbersome task to do it in this book the techniques are ordered alfabetically, not by medium. So, lets say that you are interested specifically in pastels. Then you will have to skip trough al the pages in order to find all the techniques that may apply to pastels.

  5. Great book for techniques in mixed media. I have to admit i checked this one out at the library first and realized when it was a month overdue and i was still having problems returning it that i should just buy the book. Tate gives great ideas on different effects that you can acheive while painting etc... but i was also hoping for some more actual finished product examples where she illustrated the ideas presented. It didn't hinder the wonderful inspiration and ideas too badly, but it'd be nice to see more of the final works- or different ways you can incorporate the uses shown. I use this book all the time when questions arise or i just want something cool to inspire me.

2 comments about Creative Watercolor: Step-By-Step Guide and Showcase.

  1. I picked this up as a toss out book from the library. It had hardly been used, but the information is invaluable. I have just completed my sixth college art class, and I am constantly looking for new ideas and new inspirations. Bechwith's selections are inspiring. The book is divided into three parts: Techniques inspired by nature, techniques inpired by materials, and techniques inpired by technology. It covers the realm of naturalistic forms in novel approaches to digital art processes. There are some beautiful ideas in these pages. There are actual step-by-step examples of complex techniques - an approach that makes sense, followed by "showcase" sections of really fine artists who use varied techniques.

  2. The Ice crystal technique is a nature artist's dream! The images created by the cobweb technique was my favorite. It really brought the child out in me. This book will be appreciated by all watercolor artists, beginner and professional.

5 comments about The Art of Color: The Subjective Experience and Objective Rationale of Color..

  1. As an artist who uses color in my work, this book has been invaluable. The color wheel has always been my primary reference for color combinations; however, since reading Johannes Itten book, an entirely new world of understanding and enlightenment has evolved. I love this book for how it has enriched my knowledge and passion for color.

  2. A little expensive, but well laid out and designed. On quality paper. Thoroughly recommended.

  3. This book of Johannes Itten is a good example of the use of colour in the antroposofic way. He connects the different colours with moods and feelings, religious symbols and even gives it a spiritual dimension. For me it was an eye-opener on the aspect of harmony. Itten emphasizes that the eye and mind are always looking for balance, harmony in the sense of a grey-tone. If a work of art does not reflect this kind of harmony, for instance because of a distonality in the use of colours, the eye and mind get restless and agitated. But if used on purpose this aspect of colour gives a work of art a very strong impact and makes it a masterpiece.[...].

  4. This book might be expensive, but what do you expect for such genius. I love this book, and would recommend it to anyone into color theroy. Itten is a color genius, and this book proves it.

  5. I'd studied physiology and neuroscience, later switching careers from a medical path to that of a designer. I've dived into many sources for my self-education/training. Itten is the grand-master of color; no other book I've read compares to those of Itten. His teachings have enlightened me in ways that I'm amazed by, touching on scientific, psychological, behavioral, and the most personal aspects of color as a study and an experience. It's changed the way I look at my environment, and it's changing the way I use color in my work as a designer.

I'm so impressed with the value this book has had to me, that I bought Itten's book on Form and Design, even though I didn't necessarily feel lacking on those aspects of design. It's rather because of the likelihood in the quality and richenss of knowledge I'll gain, as I did from this book.

1 comments about Portraiture (Reaktion Books - Essays in Art and Culture).

  1. This book provides an essential overview of the theory of portraiture. Brilliant provides a concise and well written handbook that will help any student who wishes to understand the way people portray people. Although he is a scholar of classical art, he approaches the subject through the full cannon of Western art.

1 comments about Dutch Seventeenth-Century Genre Painting: Its Stylistic and Thematic Evolution.

  1. Franits gives a very thorough and leveled image of Dutch 17th century genre painting. He is careful to represent the various opinions that exist on genre painting and doesn't push his opinions too strongly. The book includes a complete bibliography, in-depth footnotes and a great deal of glossy colour images. This is the best book on genre painting since that of Peter Sutton.
