3 comments about Rosenthal: Dining Services, Figurines, Ornaments and Art Objects (Schiffer Book for Collectors) (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. The book is not bad but isn't great either. The text is ok,the system of determining the year of production according to the mark is very good, but pictures do not include the best figurines,eg The girl with pearls, etc.

  2. I found the book difficult to navigate. It does show many pictures but really misses the mark as far as information in regard to values and descriptions, the information was rather sketchy and incomplete in many areas.

  3. This is the best Rosenthal book available in the English language. It has many photos, explanations and a complete list of marks and model numbers. Most of the information is taken from the extremely rare German book 100 Jahre Rosenthal (100 Years of Rosenthal).

    Highly recommended.

2 comments about The House of Haeger, 1914-1944: The Revitalization of American Art Pottery (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. We have been collecting Haeger for years. This book gives us a better understanding and history of our collection.

  2. This wonderful book explores more than just Haeger's early years. It contains a wealth of information about Martin Stangl and his connections to the Fulper pottery and of course Fulper's later incarnation as Stangl pottery. I recommend this book without reservation to anyone seeking more information about Haeger, Fulper or Stangl. I have collected Fulper for a long time but still found useful insights. The photos are grand!

4 comments about Greene & Greene.

  1. I have read every book available today on Greene & Greene and have found Mr. Bosley's to be the most informative. Many of the images found throughout are unique to this book and are an excellent companion to the text. If you're looking for either a general introduction to Greene & Greene or a valuable reference to their life and work, this is the book to own.

  2. I am a furniture maker working in the G&G style and have been a serious fan for many years. In fact, I have just finished writing my own book on Greene and Greene furniture ( from a woodworker's viewpoint). I relied on information found in Edward R. Bosley's book for my own book. I found his book to be the most in-depth and accurate book available on the subject of Greene and Greene. If you are a fan of G&G this book is an absolute necessity!
I would also highly recommend Bruce Smith's book "Greene and Greene Masterworks".

  3. Above normal production with some very nice touches. Very well written and complete text, although there is a painful flaw to this publication. The floor plans and a vast number of the desriptive pictures are improperly sized for viewing. Greene & Greene's art-like floor plan drawings have been reduced to something impossible to read and interpret. Considering the price of this volumn, this is an inexcusable flaw. As a coffee table publication this might be acceptable but for the money its a shame the publisher did not catch this oversight.

  4. I grew up in Pasadena and have been waiting for a book like this on the greene and Greene brothers. This book makes all the other previous books look naive, fawning, and lame. This book treats the subject, that is, the architecture, properly.

2 comments about Nymphettes.

  1. First off, some people need to be able to know what is and isn't an elf. Pointed ears usually means the character is an elf. Round ears, they aren't.

Work is mainly pinups. Many characters from Blairs other 'Elflord' and 'Sapphire' series appear here, including the brief 'Bianca' series in 'Sizzle'.

Fairly tame erotica for this artist. Wonder when we might see v2?

  2. It was an enormous thrill for me to provide a review of "The Erotic Elfin Art of Nymphettes" by Barry Blair and Colin Walbridge. Barry and I go way back, almost twenty years. We've never met, never even spoken by phone, but when I put out my fledgling fanzine "Alter Limits" back in 1986, Barry's comic company Aircel was one of the most helpful independent comic companies to a young writer, supplying me with review copies, artwork, even paying to advertise in my little zine and I've always appreciated it. I've been an admirer of his work ever since he first produced his legendary fantasy comic, Elflord. Influenced by both Wendy Pini and Wally Wood, with a touch of Anime, Blair has carved out a nice little niche for himself and garnered a legion of fans with his comic works over the past two decades.

This 48 page over-sized book feature Blair and his partner Colin Walbridge presenting an extraordinary collection of full-color paintings of erotic and sultry Elfin art, all with the wily and spry humor we've come to expect from them. One thing I love about the book is that the each piece is titled. I wish this was done more in art collections. Blair and Walbridge use colors that are as bright and feisty as the characters they illustrate.

Dark Elves are popular character in fantasy fiction these days and one of the standout paintings in this collection is "Rosehawk" featuring a dark elf female, clad in contrasting red leather, holding a sword and ready for battle. In "The Lynx and the Serpent Lagoon" a beautiful red-haired elf battles for her life against a monstrous sea-serpent. Showing off their wry humor is a piece called "Now you will tell me" depicting an elf buried in sand up to her chest as a female pirate waits for her to spill her secrets.

"Unexpected Visit" is an aptly named painting. A cute elf is lounging in a refreshing bath when she's suddenly startled by the appearance of an unwanted companion in her bathtub. And in a nod to playful pin-ups of days gone by, "Bad Bianca" shows a pretty little elf on the receiving end of a good spanking while several other elves laugh and giggle in the background. It's a superb collection by one of my favorites from the "golden age" on independent comics. Well worth checking out for fans of fantasy or erotic art.
