4 comments about Male Bonding (Fotofactory Anthology Series Book 1).

  1. Though primarily a collection of young men in pairs and groups and in various stages of bonding, this little book takes the time and compassion to also look at the joy of all types of male bonding. Fathers and sons, men in crazy outfits having fun, some very artistic, 'staged for effects' photos, and then the focus on body parts conjoined just suggesting love making. This is a refreshing group of black and white photographs that encourages return readings, just for the pleasure of men with men. The range of photographers covers the very well known (Arthur Tress, Harriet Liebowitz, John Sonsini, Kristen Bjorn, etc) as well as the aspiring young talents whose works are seen here for the first time.

  2. Some good pics, others only average. Also the book is too small, only seven inches. Nice for the colector though.

  3. "Of all the male-oriented photo books that arrive every year in time for the holidays, Male Bonding stands out for both the variety and artistic accomplishment of its images. Forty-two different artists, including Arthur Tress, Clifford Baker, Hans Fahrmeyer, and Bill Costa, are represented. (This) will appeal to anyone interested in fine art photography." - review excerpt from CB at A Different Light Books

  4. A hard-to-find collection of photos of men together in couples and groups. A great collection of shots from over 40 photographers, including Clifford Baker, Kristen Bjorn, Bill Costa and Stanley Stellar.

4 comments about New Media in Late 20th-Century Art (World of Art).

  1. If I remember correctly, this book was the assigned text for the digital art class I took Spring '01 at SMCM. Interesting book with a lot of good intro material on folks like Nam June Paik. It gets a bit tedious at times but also has some pretty great color images throughout; too bad it's not an over-sized art history text -- now that would have been awesome.

  2. This book was informative and enjoyable to read. As a visual artist working more and more new media and in desperate need of knowledge on this subject it gave me a basic background and encouraged me to jump in and explore the medium. I would like to contact Michael Rush if someone can supply an address.

  4. Even when I don't know a lot about the subject, I like books that say a lot to me through their format, their content, text layout, photographs quality. Nothing such with this ordinary treaty considered as an exam composition. Disappointing for such an explosive topics. Would "new media" be already out of fashion at the beginning of this century?

4 comments about Toby & Character Jugs of the 20th Century and Their Makers.

  1. What a marvelous reference tool "Toby & Character Jugs of the 20th Century and Their Makers Is"! The dazzling photos and quality information make this book a "must-have" for all Toby collectors! Indeed, I discovered that I had actually purchased a FAKE Doulton. When I returned the jug to a local antiques store, I took along my Toby reference book. No questions were asked as for the return. In fact, the owner quickly wrote down info about the book in order to purchase one for herself.

  2. I have always been fascinated by toby mugs and jugs, but could not find the right source of information. This is one of the best reference books ever. I use it daily to help identify toby and character mugs and jugs. I was very lucky to get an advanced copy of it's companion price guide. The combination of the two has proved to be very useful. I would recommend these two publications highly!

  3. This is a fabulous book for the toby and character jug collector. The photo quality is exceptional (although some jugs are fairly small in the photos) and the organization is alphabetical by manufacturer. The information contained in the book is extensive. A wonderful reference source.

  4. When this artfully compiled book was handed to me for inspection, my first thought upon viewing it was "Wow! I wish all reference books were this thorough!"

They're not kidding when they say "Busting with Color." It also has tables with prices, edition numbers, and the item's history. I learned more about Toby and Character Jugs that I ever thought I knew! I plan to spend hours in the American Toby Jug Museum first chance I get! And the second, and the third, and ...

    Great book. Wonderful.

2 comments about Into the Nature: Of Creatures And Wilderness.

  1. I bought Into the Nature as a resource book for senior painting students. It has a wide collection of images but very little writing. If you liked Wonderland and Romantic you will probably enjoy this book. It is excellent as it has a wide variety of approaches to a single theme / subject matter. A number of the images are very challenging so don't buy it if you are easily offended. My students loved it and were very inspired by the images.
So yes I'd recommend it as part of a resource collection but don't purchase it as a be all and end all book.

  2. I'ts really very nice, and thick; It's a big book. Full of interesting photography and illustration.

1 comments about The Art of Mitch Byrd Volume One.

  1. Mitch Byrd isn't the typical SQP Glamour/pin-up artist. If there's one guy who really seems to be out to create a unique niche for himself it's Byrd. Mitch got his start in comics working first for Malibu comics before working for DC on Guy Gardner: Warrior and Starman, for Marvel on Generation X, and later for a variety of other publishers on such characters as Shi, Predator, and Lady Death. Byrd has shown he has the talent to work in any genre from horror to fantasy, to sci-fi, to crime and superhero, and, it seems, basically anything under the sun.

This book represents an overall sampling of Mitch's art from all of these genres. The Byrd woman isn't the svelte, supermodel type you're probably used to seeing in most of the great books from SQP. Mitch's women are curvy, buxom, and full of attitude, fully looking as if they'd just be as happy to punch out your lights as have a drink with you. To me his work reminds me a bit of Richard Corben, slightly in style but more in attitude.

Check page 14 with a wonderful jungle drawing of a great ape striding through some ancient ruins as a large-hipped, and very nude woman looks on with a startled expression. The work conjures up the feel of those old 30's and 40's jungle action pulp magazines. Another pure Byrd piece is the one on page 35 that features a nude woman lying seductively as a comedic, squat, Hindu man can barely contain his glee as he strokes her legs.

The Byrd woman is fearless as evidenced by the drawings on pages 29 & 59. The first showing a female warrior fighting off a hulking minotaur and the second showing a nude female about to battle a gigantic, coiled snake. Strange aliens, voracious beasts, powerful heroes, treacherous villains...gun blazing action and epic space battles; It's all to be found in this fantastic 64 page collection of Mitch's art.
