3 comments about Napco (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. This is the best book you can find on the subject of NAPCOS. It is not 100% complete, since so many thousand NAPCOS were issued since the mid 1900's; however, this book will give the collector a very nice basis on the subject.

Excellent photos. Printed on nice paper!

  2. This is a fantastic book for the Napco collector. It offers beautiful pictures of some of the best figurines ever made. If you're a fan of Napco, this book is a must have!

  3. This is by far the best book on Napco figurines and has MANY of the hard to find items fully photographed. I have been looking for a book to help me on my Storybook collectables for years and this one is a dream come true! Also has birthday angels and many, many more! So much information all photographed and in beautiful full color! Kathleen Deel knows her Napco collectables and now I will too! I highly recommend this book!

2 comments about The World of Wade Figurines And Miniatures (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I'm not a Wade collector but needed to research a 1950's figurine given to me by my aunt. I couldn't find anything like it on eBay, so I ordered this book. Within minutes of opening it I had found my piece and enough information about it to list it successfully for sale. As with any reference book on antiques and collectibles, the values must be treated with skepticism since prices change with shifts in collectors' interests. But for basic background information, including illustrations and dating of backstamps, it is excellent.

  2. I love the Wade Whimsey figurines, but I was flying blind until I got this book. I am now a much more informed collector. I highly recommend this book to any collector.

3 comments about Decorative Art 50s (Decorative Art).

  1. Taschen writes this is a sourcebook. It just shows where design comes from. What was done in that era. And this book does just that and does it good. No high-brow comment, just reproductions of pages of house-plans, chairs, sidetables, glass ceramics etc. So, if you want to know if your old chair has any historic relevance, look in this book and see if there is a design original, or you might own it! Emphasis on the US, England Scandivavia, Italy and the Netherlands.

  2. Once you get past the lovely cover, the interior of this book consists entirely of magazine pages from the 1950's reproduced wholesale. While that means authenticity, it also means small, uninspiring black and white photography. Like looking at an old magazine, not the beautiful graphics one usually expects from Taschen.

  3. An absolute must have for anyone with a love for the modernist design movement of the 50's and 60's, or if you're looking to stay consistent with a modernist theme while redecorating. It's so sleek and plastic and modular. I love it! And in the tradition of Taschen books, the price is well worth it!

1 comments about Janet Cardiff: The Walk Book.

  1. An amazingly engaging art book, almost a new form of writing in which the artist's work and her words and process diagrams are interlaced with adroitly framed essays on the background of her works, philosophical thoughts, discourses, side-journeys, mental experiments about the meaning of time and memory, explorations into listening and sound. Mirjam Schaub explains Cardiff's ephemeral walking pieces in a manner that is deeply sympathetic with her themes and the significance of Cardiff's voice. Each page rings with poetic truth and Schaub is selfless in presenting Cardiff's ouvre.

1 comments about Two Centuries Of History On Long Beach Island.

  1. Mr. Lloyd's book are well-researched and well written, accompanied by numerous rare photos. I have all of his books and have found them to be both entertaining and informative. They give the reader an in-depth history of Long Beach Island, it's people, their culture and lifestyle, and events which have shaped the island's past and present. Anyone wanting to gain an understanding of the rich history of LBI needs to read this book. Bravo!

2 comments about Understanding Greek Vases: A Guide to Technical Terms (Looking at Series).

  1. The book begins with a quick general overview on Greek ceramics - its history, techniques, trajectory in themes, artists, mythological characters, Greek culture/society that finds itself within the art, etc - that provides the reader with a pretty good base for the number of pages it takes up. There is then a short section on the 'conservation and care of ancient Greek ceramic objects' that explains some more technical things.

After that comes the large section on Greek potters and vase painters, listed in alphabetical order and accompanied by colorful and informative images of the relevant vases. The artist's period, name, style and whatnot are explained in detail. Definitions for unfamiliar terms used in this section can be found in the next part of the book, which explains vase shapes and technical terms in normal English (also with nice images). Thus through the cross-referencing, most of the book's content can be understood without much trouble. At the end is a chart of vase shapes, which is useful because you can compare them without having to flip a single page.

This book is excellent for purposes of quick reference. I would say that most people would not read it like they would a novel, but if you have any interest in Greek vase paintings, this is an excellent book to have.

  2. Understanding Greek Vases, published by the Getty Museum, is a compact reference guide that provides the essential background (painters, styles, terminology) needed to study and appreciate ancient Greek vases.

The major part of the book consists of short (half-page), encyclopedia-style, entries for Athenian potters, vase-painters, ceramic styles, and other essential terminology. Coverage, although limited to Athenian pottery, is broad and expert, ranging from "bilingual vases" to "Six's technique." Entries are generously illustrated, mostly in color, by important examples (including many "name vases") from museum collections in the U.S. and abroad.

What really sets this book apart is that the individual entries are so extensively cross-referenced, that they look and feel more like a hypertext-linked web site than a conventional book. For example, if you look up the entry for the "Brygos Painter," you'll get cross-references in the text to three other Cup-painters, to Cup-painting itself, to the Pioneers, to Workshops, to Attribution, to Kylix, and to seven illustrations.

This is an amazingly effective reference, one that I will use often at home, and take with me whenever I go to look at Greek vases in a museum. Tip: don't plan to read it cover-to-cover like an ordinary book. Begin with some topic that interests you, and follow the cross-references as you would with a Web page.
