1 comments about Korean Art from the Gompertz and Other Collections in the Fitzwilliam Museum: A Complete Catalogue (Fitzwilliam Museum Publications).

  1. I was disappointed by this book because Gompertz's own book on Korean celadon and Yi ceramic was (and still is) standard english reference book to study Korean ceramics. Gompertz studied many Japanese scholars at that time, and made his own perception on the beauty of Korean ceramics.
In this new book, there was no further improvement of Gompertz legacy. His ceramics are not compared to other masterpieces, and there are not enough detail analysis of the various colors, firing, and techniques. The picture quality is mediocre, and when you want to show the subtle celadon glaze, picture quality is very important. There is no new information on the text. The scholars should have tried to compare Chinese Song celadon and Korean celadon since we now have enough information about the influence between Song and Koryo period unlike the time when Gompertz was doing his research.

So far, the best books on Korean celadon/Yi ceramics are published by Japanese publishers (even better than Korean) so I recommend those books even if you cannot read Japanese, and buy the original Gompertz book for text. And price of $200..this is hard to justify.

1 comments about Daphne 01: Sketches by Daphne Yap.

  1. The cover of this book does not do the interior justice. I'd seen it for sale on various websites, and really wasn't interested. I had the chance to thumb through a copy, and what's inside is spectacular. Daphne has some delightfully creative designs inside, and a profound attention to detail and line.

The interior is entirely expertly rendered pencil line drawings. If I were to nitpick anything, I'd simply like to see more.

  2. Looking at the cover to The Art of Walter Girotto, I knew I was in store for something that was very different that most of the fine material put out by SQP. This was something with a decidedly different look. Oh sure, there's a beautiful, nude woman on the cover, but upon opening up the book I was surprised at what I found there. Walter Girotto was a totally unknown artist to me until I got this book. Girotto is an Italian artist who came to the United States back in 1985. I hesitate to categorize him as a pin-up or erotic artists, although his work certainly has those qualities. But Girotto is something more. Working in oils, pastels, even crayon and colored pencil, his work produced on wood gives it an aged, textured, grainy look. He blends a Renaissance period look with 21st century eroticism to create a completely unique style. Going beyond traditional pin-up art, Girotto's work really classifies as fine art.

His different methods and tools produce some startling work, and it's really unlike anything I've ever seen. Take the piece simply called "Nude 30" showing a radiant blonde that was finished with colored pencil on prepared paper. I don't think that paper was prepared for Girotto! "Shauna Wearing Red Boots" features the beautiful subject lying nude on a divan clad in only red boots. These pieces complement his smooth, soft style perfectly.

I love a painting called "Unconcerned" in which Girotto combines oils and pastels on this seductive woman with full, pouty lips and eyes closed. "Love Temptation" seems derived right out of the 1500's with the nude blonde subject holding a bunch of pink roses while a cherub hovers over her shoulder. Julie Strain has never looked quite so refined as she does in "Julie Strain Portrait" showing the scream queen amidst of Renaissance Era sculptures with a cherub lying at her feet.

Throughout the 100 plus page collection you'll find yourself mesmerized at this incredibly talented artists who has taken eroticism to a whole other level. The book is printed on slick, glossy stock. Fantastic!

  3. good: different style of pin-up art mixing renaissance style and modern poses in high quality

bad: this is a magazine and not a paperback; the cover and pages are very thin and crease with casual flipping; SQP publishing can do better; if you are a Girotto fan go on-line and seek out the hardback version though pricey

5 comments about Beluga.

  1. Just few pictures are beautiful , I did not like the association of sea food and dead fishes with cute girls posing.

  2. I accept my lack of knowledge or depth of understandings about many things in life. For those who reckon this book is really significant and treat it like some sort of masterpiece or something-they must be able to see things I, in my ignorance, don't.

It's a pleasant little curiosity but, like nipples on men,....why?! Is this a recipe book or a nude study? My interest comes from it's nude study component. At that level it's OK but nothing terribly special. I haven't attempted any of the recipes so would have to assume they are also `middle of the road'. I like the incongruous, things out of context and unrelated juxtapositions so it does have some appeal, but just to that eccentricity in my nature.

Though it hardly `floats my boat', if something inside you drives a need for a recipe book with a nude study made using the ingredients, kitchen, dishes etc as props, this is probably the best on the market. Even if there's better nude studies and probably better recipe books, if that's the combination you need your choices are likely to be limited and this is probably the best available.

    Cheers

    Lloyd

  3. Woah, wait a second... stop looking at me. Look at the ladies. They are even tastier than the food. Mmmmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmmm....
You know, just the other day I was thumbing through my recipes and I started thinking... these recipes need pictures of devistatingly HOT girls and then life would be perfect.
Well, apparently someone else thought the same thing, and they went out and found the girls, and just the right recipes and put them together in a book. Now, I don't have to hide this book under the bed, I tell babys momma... I'm a CHEF! And the book stays safely in the kitchen, for whenever I need that late night snack. :)

  4. Gorgeus nudes, elegant like beluga, a smooth collection rounded in a book with delicious recipes. Belongs to every good houshold.Enjoy!

  5. This fresh and inspiring book is bringing a new dimension to cooking in general, by using a very untraditional background and astonishing models combined with extraordinary recipies this is the perfect fusion of new cuisine. This book is highly recommendable for people who like something really new !
