1 comments about Artists' Handbook For Photographing Their Own Artwork, The.
- This is an excellent book for those who need to take pictures of artwork, crafts or other products and need some help to achieve great results. I am a woodworker and I have read a number of things on the subject - articles, sections in other books, general photography books, etc - but mostly these deal with the very basics to get you started, but leave you with no idea where to go next. John White gives excellent coverage of the basics, but then gives lots of options, ideas and tips for taking your photos to a professional standard. He includes a range of equipment options for all techniques, usually working from the build-it-yourself option up to the top-of-the-line choice with pros and cons of each. He assesses the merits of buying new and used equipment with precise recommendations. He also discusses selecting film, labs to develop your work and even a pro photographer if you decide you still need to hire one. Although the book is aimed at photographing fine art, the principles are easily applied to any product photography. This is an excellent reference that will remain useful for years.

2 comments about 100 New York Painters.
- Reading this book led to a magical discovery of the art of our time. Unlike most other art books, the selection of well known and less known artists is not a repeat of the familiar names. Rather, it reflects the seasoned hand of the living painters in New York. The book is composed of the works by women and men of artistic sophistication and a distinguished exhibition record. Some of them are stars of the established commercial galleries. Some are represented by alternative art spaces. The inclusion of the diverse group of painters is bold and unconventional, for the majority of books are centered around the former. This book, with its highly successful reproductions, reveals more the reality of our time. There are indeed more dedicated painters than what the traditional theorists would like for us to believe. Through her connoisseur's eye, the author Cynthia Dantzic brought to us a window to art so appetizing and distinct, it is a testimony of contemporary painting made in New York.
- Love this new book. I got a copy of this book and can not put it down. What a great selection on artists. The color and paper quality is amazing. I can't wait to learn more about the artists in this book!

5 comments about Elegant Porcelain and Glass Painting Projects.
- This book offers little direction and even less information on decorative glass/porcelain painting. The ideas are simple, the instruction, also simple, and if you have already experimented with painting on glass and are are looking for more than foufou advice, I would suggest you skip this book.
- I really have enjoyed this book! I am not what I would consider an artist and I needed something I could do easily at home. This book gave me all the information I needed to know about all the paints on the market, and all of the relevant tools I needed - making it very easy to shop, and there was a project that worked with each of the paints. The projects are great, they are not cheesy like some other books I have but, rather they are elegant, classic, tasteful and easy to duplicate. You will find lots of great ideas and I found the book easy to follow, inspiring, full of very useful information, and something fun I can handle. As the author, Carin Heiden Atkins, says something like this in her introduction - leave your worries at the door, sit back, play your favorite music, and have a great time. You really can do this. I have recommended this book to many friends and I whole heartedly recommend this book to you.
- Carin Heiden Atkins has provided thirteen gorgeous projects; from whimsical to elegant, from kids parties to champagne toasts . . . this book has it all. There are full-color step-by-step photos showing you how to paint each piece. If you want to learn to paint the gorgeous glass pieces that are all the rage now in the shops, this book is a great place to start.
These are projects that do not require firing and are perfect for the person who is trying to create the style of painting found in upscale shops today. This is a book that I definitely recommend to crafters wanting to try glass painting.
- I don't know where the one disparaging review came from I rather disagree with the reviewer, she obviously didn't read what the book was about before she ordered and was expecting something completely different and was very unfair to Ms. Heiden Atkins in her review.
For those of you who want to learn about the various non toxic paints you can safely use at home and count on for durability this is the book for you. Carin has a very easy to understand approach to glass and porcelain painting (on finished whiteware). It was very helpful when I went to my local craft store as a shopping guide and the project I chose (the cheery cherry platter) turned out beautifully. Thank you Carin Heiden Atkins for creating a very helpful and creative book. Your work is appreciated!
- This book is good for those looking for projects on finished porcelain and glass. Great for the novice, and the craft industry has a huge selection of paint which can be used for Atkins' projects. Her projects are simple for the beginner who is looking for a starting place in artistic porcelain and glass painting. A beginning artist may adapt Atkins' ideas into unique designs and have a finished product in very little time.
These projects do not include "true" porcelain or china painting on bisque. For those looking to learn painting on china (as in Limoges, Royal Doulton or Staffordshire China, etc.), "The China Decorator" magazine offers wonderful advice in learning this art as well as including several other excellent resources.

4 comments about Architectural Ceramics for the Studio Potter: Designing, Building, Installing.
- I usually do small works; handbuilt and wheelthrown pieces and tiles. It was quite eye-opening to read this book on large scale projects. It is written in a very clear manner, with wonderful pictures.
I only fault him on his tile making techniques, which could be better, but hey, who cares? His expertise lies elsewhere. He has obviously worked out the best techniques for large ceramic projects. I like the way the book is organized. The chapters are very sequentially logical (to me). Chapter 1: Tools and Equipment Chapter 2: Building and Decorating Techniques Chapter 3: Sectioning, Drying, Glazing and Firing Chapter 4: Installation Chapter 5: The Projects Chapter 6: Gallery The Projects chapter reiterates some of the information in previous chapters, but this time applied to a particular project. This is fine with me, since reiteration is a good teaching technique. The Gallery chapter is quite inspirational! There are lots of pictures of installations done not only by Peter, but also other artists. Makes me want to try some architectural ceramics!
- I had the wonderful experience of apprenticing for Peter and finished soon after we did the photoshoot for the book. I have to say, Peter and his brother John both went through great lengths to make sure the book would have as much practical information in it as possible. The only thing better than the book is one of Peter's workshops. But with the book, all of the information that Peter gives is easy to look over time and time again. The pictures are great! As soon as you start making and install a floor, sink, fireplace and so on I'm sure that you'll be hooked. You'll realize that it is possible to do on your own or with a friend. You'll also see and understand how much farther you can push clay than you had ever expected. Plus, above all, it's alot of fun!
- The pictures are fantastic! For those of you who are tired of tiny pots, this is the book.
I'm a student and as such I'm very new to the game. This book gave me not only inspiration but enough detailed information to allow me to plan my bathroom sink. The plans include the sink, tile, and following the example in the book, the plans for the forms I need to make so that the pieces will be shaped correctly. I hope to create and fire the pieces early next year.
- For those of you who have been searching for a book on the contemporary art of handmade ceramic tile, your search is over. Peter King has twenty five years of experience in architectural ceramics. His attention to detail and design help new and experienced ceramists alike in producing their final product. He even discusses designs for inexpensive tools that can be made by the artist. I have seen the author's proof of this book and it is nothing short of spectacular. If you are interested in this medium, no other book will give you this wealth of information. I highly recommend this book and the workshops Peter gives several times a year. He is clearly a pioneer in his field.

1 comments about Engraving and Decorating Glass: Methods and Techniques.
- This is the best book I have found on diamond-point engraving, which is what I do. I think it is better even than Boyd Graham's Engraving Glass:a Beginner's Guide. Barbara Norman, an English glass engraver herself, has a conversational style of writing that is also helpful and encouraging. I wish I had found this book when I was just getting started, it would have made things so much easier. Even so, I learned ideas for tools and methods I hadn't used, and it inspired me to do more with my work. Norman also includes historical information, somewhat English based, on glass decorating techniques included in the book, i.e. drill-engraving, cooper-wheel engraving, cold-painting, gold engraving under glass. I would love to see her do an updated edition of this book, because the photographic style of the book is dated as it was published in 1972; until then this is the best, especially on diamond-point engraving.
