4 comments about Rosenthal, Excellence for All Times: Dinnerware, Accessories, Cutlery, Glass.
- München, 19.07.2001 Yesterday I had the fortune to see one copy in a Rosenthal shop in Munich, so I could avoid the mistake to buy one. Searching a dancer figurine of the 1930' you found only a - bad - picture, no description, no words about the artist who made it, nothing.... The book is too expensive for being just a collection of - many - bad pictures without historical comments.
- This book just scratched the surface and I was extremely disappointed in the contents. Very little information about the many china shapes and patterns. Nothing about the beautiful bird figurines that Rosenthal is noted for. Lots of pretty pictures but not enough useful content.
- Loved it. It was easy to read and understand. The photographs are beautiful. I can't recommend this book more for the collector rather you are just beginning or an expert. Enjoy!
- Kerr's book on Rosenthal is an absolute must-have for those whocollect and/or buy and sell Rosenthal. It is jammed full of deliciouspictures showing numerous items in all the categories Rosenthal makes. She includes a pricing guide which is reasonably accurate, even with the advent of online auctions. Don't pass this marvelous book by, it's well worth the price!

1 comments about Japanese Export Ceramics: 1860-1920.
- While the examples of ceramics shown are well photographed and beautiful, the text is minimal. Many examples of Satsuma, for example, show signatures, which is helpful, but in certain cases the signatures are not identified for English readers. To say that the vase is marked with "red characters," and not translate them, is simple laziness in scholarship, especially given the credits to individual experts who could have read them. In at least one case, the signature translation matches no others in the same text. Visually, the book provides a great bit of eye training for that which is "good" in this field for the collector. In terms of background and intellectual edification, the text rates from beginner to worthless. Hence the middle grade of three stars. A good picture book.

1 comments about On Planet Earth: Travels in an Unfamiliar Land.
- Take the desolate sound of Tool and the bilateral lyrics of Pink floyd and combine it with the eeriness of the X-Files into photographs, and Staller's book is accomplished. The pictures leave you wondering "What the hell?" as they evoke the wonderment and slight fear you haven't felt since you were a child.

1 comments about Family Nudes.
- I like the idea of this collection very much--photographs of families who are comfortable enough with themselves and each other to be nude. For many viewing these pictures, there would be an apprehension that the models would be sexualized in some way but Mohr has avoided this, to his credit. Instead, there is something about the openness you have to have to be photographed like this that is very relaxing. There seems to be a complete lack of guile in these pictures.
I am curious about his choice to stick to pair groupings in most of his photographs--mother/child or father/child--rather than entire family groups. Perhaps this helps keep attention more focused on the models and their relationship rather than diluting it among more people; however, I would have been interested to see some of the larger dynamics.
As for the photos themselves, they are varied and often stunningly beautiful. Mohr works with normal people but achieves wonderful results, all the more so because his models look human, perhaps. The fact that the coloring of his photos is never natural does get a bit old after extended viewing and the switch between various coloring styles occasionally strikes as a bit odd but, for the most part, this is a small complaint. Mohr has done something wonderful here.
