5 comments about The Art Of Joseph Michael Linsner.
- This book is big and chock full of beautiful Linsner paintings (many of which are of his greatest creation: Dawn). If you have ever seen any of his work and you liked it, I would recommend this book. There is an intro by Linsner that's pretty interesting and there are snippets about each painting throughout the book. It's a stout book that would be better as a hardcover, but that's my only complaint.
- I believe the book is now out of print, but if you're lucky you might be able to pick it up at a comic book shop which is where I got mine. This book is FANTASTIC!!! Definitely one of the best fantasy art books out there. Great colors, excellent depictions of Dawn - the fiery redhead with one eye showing *grins* and some of the most imaginative and creative art pieces you'll ever see!
Even the backgrounds are incredibly detailed, with everything from dragons to architecture to detailed walls and textures. He really sets the mood in every piece he does.
Excellent work of art. Absolutely excellent.
- The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner is essential to any JML collector, but also an awesome item for anyone who appreciates the beauty of art. The softcover edition of this collection makes it affordable to the big fans with small bank accounts. Looking through the eyes of Joe, one will see a woman as a work of art or poetry and not a piece of meat. The colors are vibrant, the details are lucid, and the annotations throughout truly give insight into the mind of the artist, who he is, how he feels, and what inspires him.
Edited by JML and Eva Hopkins, with special thanks to Zeke Feldhaus, The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner is cleverly divided into sections. It begins with a nice introduction by Richard Kane Ferguson, then proceeds to a fabulous story by JML about the first artbook he bought which reveals how his taste for art began when he was just a boy. After that, we see exquisite images of Dawn, Death, and Dark Ivory along with many others (women, men, and vampires, oh my!) throughout the Love, Hate, Heaven and Hell sections. Then we move on to About the Art, comments by JML (about art, of course) which include images from the creation of the Dawn: Three Tiers #1 cover from its birth/sketch stage to the gorgeous finished painting. And of course, no collection of art would be complete without an About the Artist segment (with pictures). But wait, that's not all, there is also a two-page spread with photographs of Dawn Lookalikes from DragonCon, some Dawn collectors items, and a few other odd and end pictures. This definitely adds a personal touch to the entire thing. Well, if you've read this far, you must be interested, so what are waiting for? Get your copy today.
- WOW! If one could give out 10 stars on the 5 star scale this would be the book to score that high.
More that just a detailed, beautiful look into one of America's leading illustrators, this is an insightful prose into the mind of that artist. Here is the successor of the great artists of the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Done in a style that is very today, and very much his own. An amazingly well produced book, with quality throughout. From the paper, the binding, to the wonderful reproductions, everything is top notch. This is an art book you would expect to pay two to three times more for. I feel this is a chance to glimpse into tomorrows major gallery artist, before he explodes on the scene. Live a little dangerously and venture into some unknown areas. ENJOY!

1 comments about Art Works: Place (Art Works).
- Dean & Millar's text will be a very helpful text not only for artists but those from other disciplines as well who are exploring the complexities of place/space. The chapter "Entrance" is a fine introduction for artists and others to the idea of place, its relevant discussions and thinkers. Those well versed in the conversation of place and those interested in the variety of artistic manifestations of place/space will find the remainder of the text a delightful introduction as they explore specific artists and their works.
Chapters include:
1) Place - The First of All Things
2) Urban
3) Nature
4) Fantastic
5) Myth/History
6) Politics/Control
7) Territories
8) Itinerancy
9) Heterotopias and Non-Places

1 comments about American Impressionism: The Modern Landscape (Phillips Collection).
- The book is filled with works not in other books on the subject (or at least books I'm familiar with). I especially love the details of the pictures. They beautifully depict the brushwork and texture of the works. The book contains a really nice selection of paintings. It also includes biographical information about the artists without too much digging into the meaning of their work. Beautiful book! Amazon sent an email about this book, and I checked it out. Glad I did! I like an art book with more art (after all that's what it's about)...

3 comments about Hollywood and History: Costume Design in Film.
- As you will gather from the title, "Hollywood and History" is essentially a review of the costumes worn in the great (and not-so-great) historical epics produced in Hollywood's salad days, with a side trip to look at the costumes of science-fiction films. Lots of interesting stuff here (such as a chart showing how men's and women's "looks" in hairstyling, makeup, and the like changed decade by decade), and the photos and illustrations, both color and in B&W, are first-rate. My only real quibble - and this is something that's basically out of the control of the authors, as this book was published to accompany a museum exhibit from some years ago - is that the book doesn't cover more modern movies. As I said, though, that's not really something the authors can go back and fix at this point, and if you keep that in mind, you'll enjoy this book. Recommended for any film costume student's library.

- This is a beautiful exhibition catalogue that shows how movies depict historical and SF costume. It is full of beatiful illustrations from the movies being discussed and also has examples of the actual costume worn in that movie.
What is very interesting is in the historical sections. You can clearly see how *wrong* these costumes are. Superfically they look right - but that's about it. Even 'gone with the wind' has it's problems. There is also a section on SF movies and how the costuming in those are affected by what people are wearing at the time they are made. Out of this section the movies that seem to have stood the test of time the best are 'bladerunner' and 'flash gordon 1980'. This is a very interesting book for people who are interested in the movies and costume.

5 comments about Archaeological Mexico 2 Ed: A Guide to Ancient Cities and Sacred Sites.
- I have used Archaelogical Mexico for personal use and have placed it on reserve in the college library to supplement the scholarly texts in my Latin American Culture course. The book contains over 400 pages of concise history, illustrations, photographs and quality anecdotes about the Mesoamerican cultures of ancient Mexico. This is one of the most responsible travel books I have seen, so I wanted to write to congratulate Mr. Andrew Coe on a delightful compendium of Mexican archaelogy. Kathleen O'Connor-Bater
- I think that the reviewers that gave this book lower scores may have had misplaced expectations. While this book gives a reasonable amount of information about each of the sites that it covers, it does not provide an in depth treatise on them. It does, however, provide sufficient detail for a starting point and, more importantly, is invaluable in identifying the major sites and in recommending which sites are potentially more interesting. I found the rankings (in number of trowels) to be particularly useful.
- I know it's hard to keep up to date, but that's why new editions are published. What got my attention was the fact that this book's description of getting to Yaxchilan clearly pre-dates the construction of a paved road from Palenque all the way along the Guatemala border to Lagunas de Montebello. The publication date of the book is September 2001, yet the road was opened in 2000 and must have been under construction for some time before then. I hate it when something I know is wrongly described in a book; it makes me mistrust the rest of it.
- I really looked forward to this book and took it with me on my tour of mayan sites in the Yucatan. However, I found that this book offered very little more than was available on the posted signage at the sites. Also, many of the maps are inadequate. I often found myself going to my Lonely Planet guide (Belize, Guatemala & Yucatan) for more detailed maps and decriptions of archeological sites.
Although the author presents the sites in a "tour" format, in practice it is hard to follow, and since the descriptions lack photos, it's very difficult to compare what you're seeing with what's written in the book. Although there are photos of the sites, but not of the specific items that the author is describing.
- this book can be deceiving, it's small, doen't use very technnical language, fits in your backpack and looks very innocent. But is full of information, maps, step by step guides to the sites and some tips on hanging around the sites.
I'm not disapointed of buying it.

5 comments about The Hand of the Poet: Poems and Papers in Manuscript.
- There is something magical about seeing well known and loved poems in the poet's own hand... this book provides an interesting insight into the works of a good number of well-known poets. A must-have for those who read poetry with more than just a passing interest, this book is also a good starting point for biographical information. Nice photographs, and, when necessary, captions transcribing the poets' sometimes illegible handwriting make this book a gem. Perfect for browsing.
- I bought the book, and interesting as it is, I'm just not sure what it's worth to me as a lover of literature and as a writer. I like seeing some of the original manuscripts, the various pictures, and such, but that really didn't enlighten me to anything. Yes, there is a small biographical introduction to each writer, but it's so short as to be almost pointless. This is the kind of book you check out of the library, not buy. I don't want anyone to think it's not a good collection. It is. But I can't in any good faith recommend someone spending this much money on something that really doesn't bring to light anything new or special about any one of these writers. It's just...well, it's just neat. If you want something special, then look elsewhere. If you just like spending money on neat books, then maybe this is for you.
- this was a nicely done book that helps show you the importance of the poet's original manuscript. all poets and poetry lovers should pick this one up.
- This book is based on an 1996 exhibit in the New York Public Library which featured original material from one hundred poets, covering centuries of work, including poets as diverse as John Donne and Allen Ginsberg. Part of the appeal of the exhibit was seeing the actual original manuscripts, jotted notes, and correspondence right in front of you, and in that regard, the book can not live up. It is, nonetheless, excellent in its scope and interesting in its reproductions of the material from the exhibit. It would be particularly appealing to students or enthusiasts of poetry, that is, those with a prior background knowledge of the poets included. It would be of less value to someone looking for an introduction to poetry. I did thoroughly enjoy both the exhibit and the book and do strongly recommend it to any poetry enthusiast.
- Contains reproductions of original manuscripts,
about one page each, of a wide range of well
known authors. Nicely bound and wrapped, a good
gift especially for aspiring authors or people
very involved in literature.
