2 comments about The Power of Icons: Russian and Greek Icons 15th-19th Century.
- Lovely book. Lavish with illustrations. Perfect for what I wanted.
- This is one of the best books on the subject to have been published in recent years. It is very informative and well written - there are one or two minor spelling mistakes, but that does not affect the overall quality. So many books are repetetive and pedestrian that it is refreshing to find one which covers so much including the history of the thought behind the Icon as well as technical details. If anyone only wants two or three books on the Icon this should be one of them.

3 comments about Breaking into Graphic Design: Tips from the Pros on Finding the Right Position for You.
- The author's writing style is very funny. I liked his "thriller" chapter when he started interviewing for jobs after gathering all the info for this book! He had me hanging on every word.. asking "Well, did you get the job? What happened?". What an ingenious way to get a head start on what to do and help everyone else while you're at it!
That's what Rudi Giuliani did when he decided to run for mayor of NY, he created a "Mayor's School" and learned everything he needed to know by inviting former successful mayors to instruct at his school where he was #1 student.
The reason for only 4 stars? Well, the Websites that were recommended to post on for jobs costs $75 per year for an individual to join, or you can't view the job listings or post your portfolio & resume. That wasn't mentioned in the book. Most people just out of school and unemployed don't have $75 to spend just to view a job listing. And there was no postings for Orlando, FL which is a fairly large city for Graphics. Very disappointing for such a "highly traveled" avenue for Graphics per the interviewees. Another Website highly recommended out of 4 was not much to look at. Some winners of a competition, the work was nice.. but is this all there is to the Website? I didn't check the other two after being disappointed in the first two.
Viewing the portfolios was free though, and there is some absolutely WONDERFUL talent on the portfolios page!! I was truly blown away. If for no other reason, visit [...] just to look at the awesome design and art!!
- As a graphic design student about to graduate into the real world, I've been at the verge of a nervous breakdown trying to figure out what I'm going to need to do to get a good job. This book gave me so many answers that my design classes didn't provide. Part of Jefferson's book gives information and advice such as how a designer should approach a cover letter, a comprehensive list of websites where design jobs can be found, and exactly what needs to be sent in an application package.
A large bulk of the book is dedicated to interviews with designers and people who hire designers. They were asked specific questions about what gets an applicant an interview, what they look for in an applicant's samples, etc. After reading this, I feel much more prepared to go out and start finding the job I want.
- Before this was released I bought some other books about design employment and they were useless. I'm so glad I was able to get a copy of "Breaking into Graphic Design". The book explains very clearly the steps that designers should take to find all kinds of work. This book helped me find a job and I'm sure it will do the same for many others. If you have any interest in design as a career, you should get a copy.

5 comments about Still Time.
- In my view, three works by this gifted photographic artist should be treated as a triptych: this volume, At Twelve, and Immediate Family. Taken as an ensemble, they mutually inform each other both for the range of stylistic and technical mastery exhibited by Ms. Mann, as well as demonstrating the breadth of her photographic vision.
The most recently published of the three works, Still Time is also the only one that displays both black/white and color photos. The subject matter includes portrayals unique to this book and also a brief selection from the two volumes mentioned above. Her cibachrome and polaroid color pictures demonstrate her eye for pure design. Several platinum prints display her awareness of texture and contrast; one of them--a photograph of an arm draped in a flowing sleeve against a multiply flecked, aged wall--is exquisite.
As is all of her work, taken as a whole. Less appealing to me were the impressionistic black-and-white photos presented in a circle as if peering directly through the camera. However, this is part of her creative experiment and it is to be expected that not every subject or mode of presentation will appeal to all.
Were you to buy only one volume of Ms. Mann's work, or as an introduction to it, this book would be a good choice.
- a rehash of photos from other sources. interesting, but the buyer should have been made aware so as not to duplicate previous orders.
- Sally Mann was so shockingly good in her book of photographys of her children called "Immediate Family" that I was sure none could be as good. And this book is not as good but it's still five stars.Just the cover of a night blooming cirus draped across her daughter is enough.........like the flower yet to be and the book is fully of much more. In her first books prologue there is the story of the very unconventional growing up that Sally Mann had......her father was a wildly creative man who had his children experience the unusal to say the least........but the most unusal is they apparently experienced the beauty of youth and family and life. Today some would stone her.....we know who they are ......so sad for them.
- I bought both "Still Time" and "Immediate Family" sight unseen after seeing her new book "What Remains". "Still Time" is a compilation of works from various periods. It is easy to see her promise, and there are some nice photographs. Her progress is interesting. But she really hits her stride when she photographs her children in "Immediate Family". Some of the early shots in "Still Time" seem sort of concocted and overdone-until the photos from "Immediate Family" which are breathtaking. Save your money and buy "Immediate Family".
- I am an English/photography teacher at a high school in southside Virginia. I had always been a fan of Sally's work and used this book as a teaching tool in my classroom. The way Mann has captured the human form and the "inner workings" of something as private as her family is breath taking in the flawless medium of black and white photography. I had an opportunity to meet her and after explaining to her how her book was used to inspire my students, she happily signed my copy of the book (my students went wild when when they saw her signature)!

2 comments about The Art of Indonesian Textiles: The E. M. Bakwin Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago (Museum Studies).
- This book is full of gorgeous photographs of Indonesian textiles - it's an amazing read!
- A superbly presented work of seminal scholarship, "The Art Of Indonesian Textiles" by Brigitte Khan Majlis (Curator of Textiles at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum of Ethnography in Cologne, Germany) is a joint publishing project of The Art Institute Of Chicago and the Yale University Press. Showcasing exquisite examples of the batik and ikat techniques associated with Indonesian textiles enhancing the informed and informative essays, "The Art Of Indonesian Textiles" is enhanced with the inclusion of almost seventy examples drawn from the Bakwin Collection. Many of these textiles were made for ceremonial use, playing prominent roles in rituals marking key moments in the lives of individuals and their communities. The complexity of patterns and the techniques used to make them are among the finest examples of textile art to be found anywhere in the world. From Sumatran skirts (tapis), to a Javanese head scarf (kain kaligrafi) the range of the garments is simply impressive and reflect artistic and cultural influences from China, India, Europe, and the Middle East. Embellished with the inclusion of 126 color illustrations (plus five black-and-white images), "The Art Of Indonesian Textiles" is especially recommended for inclusion into personal, professional, academic, and community library textile reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

1 comments about The Golden Deer of Eurasia.
- Ably edited and with informative commentary by Joan Aruz, Ann Farkas, Andrei Alekseev, and Elena Korolkova, The Golden Deer Of Eurasia: Scythian And Sarmatian Treasures From The Russian Steppes is a showcase volume of spectacular artifacts crated from about the fifth to the fourth century B.C.E. by the nomadic people who lived on the steeps of the southern Ural Mountain region and uncovered by recent archaeology expeditions in Filippovka, Russia. The objects include wooden, deer-like creatures overlaid with sheets of gold and silver, as well as gold attachments for wooden vessels, leather, and fabric. Very highly recommended for art history, anthropology, and archaeology reference collections, The Golden Deer Of Eurasia is the catalogue for an exhibition presented by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and is a 320-page compendium of 335 illustrations (280 in color) and seven maps.

1 comments about Prado - New Edition.
- Every picture is in color and many have a few words about the painter and the work of art. Covers both the "Spanish Collection" and the "Foreign Collections". I was particularly interested in the works of Bosch in the "Early Netherlandish and Flemish Painting" collection. The reader learns about the the history of the times as well as the things to notice in the paintings. The book is too heavy to carry while traveling, but it's just right for preparing to visit the Prado which is what I'm doing. I have the edition from Scala Publications Limited, reprinted in 1998. Every page is European art lover's delight.

1 comments about Children of the Gilded Era: Portraits of Sargent, Renoir, Cassatt and Their Contemporaries.
- As many know, American painter John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925) was not only a gifted landscape artist but was also recognized as the outstanding society portraitist of his day. One often thinks of him in connection with his painting of Madame X and the scandal that ensued. However, we are reminded of a much different Sargent when we view his portraits of children, so innocent, so appealing.
Sargent, of course, is not the only artist noted for his children's portraits. James McNeill Whistler rendered a stunning full length portrait of Miss Cicely Alexander, the daughter of a London banker and art collector. Renoir left to the world warm canvases depicting his family, Thomas Eakins immortalized children at play, and Joshua Reynolds portrayed an angelic child with "A Little Girl.."
These artists and more are represented in "Children of the Gilded Era: Portraits by Sargent, Renoir, Cassatt, and their Contemporaries" by Barbara Gallati, well known lecturer and Curator of American Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
More than a collection of memorable paintings of children this lovely volume represents how children were seen at the end of the 19th century. At that time, one's place in society was often undergirded by commissioned portraits. Thus, the children were seen not only through the artists' eyes but as the family wished them to be regarded and seen.
With 80 illustrations, each accompanied by a brief sketch, and seven succinct essays the reader is offered pictorial and narrative insight into how yesterday's society viewed children.
