4 comments about Welcome to Big Biba: Inside the Most Beautiful Store in the World.

  1. This book brought back the wonderful world of Big Biba. I was 19 and in London for the first time when my friend and I walked into Big Biba. What an amazing site--I felt like Alice in Wonderland just stepping into a fantastic new world. We had never seen anything so splendid, creative, beautiful. We didn't have much money to spend but I bought eye shadow, lipgloss, and grapefruit face toner. I kept the bottle for years as a keepsake. I wish the book had even more photos but the ones that are in it are wonderful. What a great way to relive these memories! I recommend this book for anyone interested in fashion, design, the 1970's, or if you were ever lucky enough to have visited Big Biba.

  2. This book makes me want to go back in time and step out in 60's London and experience Big Biba. Such a great story with so many fantastic photos that really capture the punkiness of the atmostphere. Great book. I highly recommend experiencing Big Biba.

  3. What else can I say but buy this book to travel back to a time when fashion was fun! A great read and a treasure to own.

  4. For those who were there, it brings back memories. For those who were not, "Big Biba" shows what you missed. For everyone, a look through this over-sized picture book will fill you with awe-- how could this have been???? But it was... Although, as a transatlantic visitor, I had mixed opinions about Big Biba (see reviews of "The Biba Experience"), it was still a wonder to behold. Time has done nothing to dilute that wonderment. In fact some of the most successful retail concepts (Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters for example) lightly but lovingly tiptoe down the Biba path. "Big Biba" is a classy 96 pages of heavyweight stock including a repro of the 16-page Opening Day Newspaper and a garment hangtag for use as a bookmark. Barbara Hulanicki herself writes the forward and doesn't dwell too much on the crash-and-burn aspect of the Biba phenomenom. As she shouldn't. Biba was obviously a product of its times, and now we have this lovely book for all time.

2 comments about Milton Avery: The Late Paintings.

  1. Pictures reveal an interesting approach, quite different than predecessors with its flat shapes and distinctive coloration. The text, however, remains a pedantic driven piece of trivization of analyses upon analyses that resemble nothing more than a laborious exercise of an overinflatted academic egotism lacking, for the most part, informative substance.

  2. Anyone who has seen Milton Avery's work knows why he is called the American Matisse. He still has an American flair in his color choice and extra simplicity. This book is an important addition to any art history library. Professor Hobbs did the world a great service in documenting the life and work of Avery,
who is becoming more and more well known following his death. There are many color pictures throughout the book.

  1. It's a very good book for design. A lot of nice design and layouts. The variety and originality of the work is awesome. The idea of layering give a vision of 3 dimensions into type treatment, which is very interesting.
A book to get if you are a graphic designer.

  2. it's a little expensive but it's worthy when i got it. very good book for graphic designer.

  3. This compilation of tolleson design work is just amazing. the book features a lot of their best works and is very inspirational. definately worth buying, and its expensive, in fact, its really affordable, making it even more worthwhile ;)

  4. I was a bit concerned about buying this book after reading complaints about type size, but after some debating I decided to just buy this book and decide for myself... and I'm glad that I did. Sure the type is small and a bit hard to read. But there are only significant ammounts of type on the first twenty pages. The majority of the remaining 268 pages contain mostly images. Some pages contain no type at all, other than page numbers.

This one gets 5 well deserved stars. Forget the type complaints and pick up a copy of this valuable addition to any designer's book collection.

  5. Soak Wash Rinse Spin's typesetting forces you to stop reading after too few pages. You really want to dig in but are quickly demoralized into putting it down.

Sagmeister's, "Made you look" was studied in wonder over a 10 hour session immediately after opening the package. I had never heard of him and i was quickly converted into a believer, all other scheduled items became secondary. Long lines of sans serif tiny type are the only thing that stopped this book from having an impact of similar strength.

An unrelated note, within one week, the binding cracked.

One research misjudgement on my part was to assume the book was published very recently and included their newest projects (see tolleson.com) It was published in 2000 of course, some projects have glimmers of past trends.

Nothing compares to the sheer visual firepower Tolleson blasts with both barrels. There is a beautiful logic flowing with every peice and you feel drawn into the scientific precision of the studio's creative process.

A printer's eye glass would be a fun attachment to assist in reading this book, which despite it's flaws is a proud part of my collection.

3 comments about Breaking into Graphic Design: Tips from the Pros on Finding the Right Position for You.

  1. The author's writing style is very funny. I liked his "thriller" chapter when he started interviewing for jobs after gathering all the info for this book! He had me hanging on every word.. asking "Well, did you get the job? What happened?". What an ingenious way to get a head start on what to do and help everyone else while you're at it!
That's what Rudi Giuliani did when he decided to run for mayor of NY, he created a "Mayor's School" and learned everything he needed to know by inviting former successful mayors to instruct at his school where he was #1 student.

The reason for only 4 stars? Well, the Websites that were recommended to post on for jobs costs $75 per year for an individual to join, or you can't view the job listings or post your portfolio & resume. That wasn't mentioned in the book. Most people just out of school and unemployed don't have $75 to spend just to view a job listing. And there was no postings for Orlando, FL which is a fairly large city for Graphics. Very disappointing for such a "highly traveled" avenue for Graphics per the interviewees. Another Website highly recommended out of 4 was not much to look at. Some winners of a competition, the work was nice.. but is this all there is to the Website? I didn't check the other two after being disappointed in the first two.

Viewing the portfolios was free though, and there is some absolutely WONDERFUL talent on the portfolios page!! I was truly blown away. If for no other reason, visit [...] just to look at the awesome design and art!!

  2. As a graphic design student about to graduate into the real world, I've been at the verge of a nervous breakdown trying to figure out what I'm going to need to do to get a good job. This book gave me so many answers that my design classes didn't provide. Part of Jefferson's book gives information and advice such as how a designer should approach a cover letter, a comprehensive list of websites where design jobs can be found, and exactly what needs to be sent in an application package.
A large bulk of the book is dedicated to interviews with designers and people who hire designers. They were asked specific questions about what gets an applicant an interview, what they look for in an applicant's samples, etc. After reading this, I feel much more prepared to go out and start finding the job I want.

  3. Before this was released I bought some other books about design employment and they were useless. I'm so glad I was able to get a copy of "Breaking into Graphic Design". The book explains very clearly the steps that designers should take to find all kinds of work. This book helped me find a job and I'm sure it will do the same for many others. If you have any interest in design as a career, you should get a copy.

1 comments about Fairy Tails 2 - A Gallery Girls Collection.

  1. When you think of faeries, at lest when I think of faeries, I see images of slender beings with a decidedly other worldly appearance. This probably came about due to the fact that my first exposure to "fairies" was when my parents took me (at about age 4) to see Walt Disneys "Fantasia".This book falls short on that stanza. The artist can certainly draw beautiful women with wings but that is exactly the way I see them; beautiful women with wings. Remove the wings and you have beautiful women. I have nothing against beautiful women, I married one. But they are not my conception of faeries. How much you like this book will depend on your conception of what a fairy should look like.

  1. I wanted this book from the moment I glimpsed it on the amazon website. When it finally arrived momentarily I was put off because in my mind the book was larger than life. I needn't have worried, its packed with creative people's output and each creative has a website so getting more is easy. I love it.
