1 comments about Guide to Impressionist Paris: Nine Walking Tours to the Impressionist Painting Sites in Paris.

  1. Patty Lurie's 178-page guide 1996 to Paris offers a refreshing, artists' look at nine hot Paris walking tours, from the current-day perspective--accompanied by 19th century impressionists' views of the same locations. Tour Five, for example, runs from the Place de la Clichy through Place de Saint-Augustin, including along the route seven artists' haunts and their various renditions thereof.

On Rue de Turin, Gustave Caillebotte painted "Paris Street: Rainy Day," in 1877, while the next year, Edouard Manet painted the nearby "Rue Mosnier Decked with Flags." The guidebook shows these paintings, alongside current-day photographs of the same spots, and includes discussions of the artists' similar works of the same areas and era.

Each of the nine tours has a similar wealth of locations and artistic delights, and helps contemporary travelers to retreat in time and see Paris from the perspective of the impressionists who enlivened the City of Lights in ways that remain fresh, even 140 years later.

In art, at least, the place is still beautiful and this little book can help one appreciate the city's former artistic glory.

3 comments about The Antique & Flea Markets of Italy.

  1. I got this cute little book as a gift for my mother who loves antiques and is traveling to Italy this summer.
Unfortunately, the information is organized by day of the week - and not by location. There is no index that cross-references by location (i.e. city, region). So you end up reading through every single entry for "2nd Sunday of the Month" just to find a market that's taking place that day in Firenze.

  2. This slim volume lists all types of markets by the day of the week or month and location. There's also usually a contact number for more information. If you're going to be in Italy during the first weekend of the month, or the second Tuesday, say, you can check the listings for that time period. There are a few blank pages at the end of the book to write your own personal market notes!

No doubt people will need local maps and/or guidebooks to help locate the markets; this book will work best in addition to other guidebooks - not as a replacement.

  3. I have used other books of this kind in the past for other countries. This one seem to lack the fundamentals for this type of informational book. #1 You must write this book for someone who is not familiar with the local surroundings or the languages. #2 In the years that will be called the new millinneum people want to just blow in and blow out. When I travel I have a limited time and budget to see the flea markets available. In this book there is alot of leg work the author could have provided but for some reason did not.#3 If you speak fluent italian you can call all the phone #'s provided if they are still current. I on the other hand will have to hire a translator. If the author would provide maps, locations to trains, location to major city monuments, and make things easy for the reader to find, the hidden treasures she has found would be available to her reader, which should be her goal. When I travel many times I have up to 5 days in which to find this type of treasure. With this book it would be difficult to accomplish what I would like, but with more effort from the author this book could be a complete guide for any traveler.

3 comments about O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes: The Artist's Collection.

  1. This is an excellent gift for someone who wants the art but also a little bit of background. Nicely done.

  2. This is a great overview of OKeeffe's work. I love her desert work and recommend this coffee table book which is full of her work.

  3. Georgia O'Keeffe died in 1986 owning more than half the approximately two thousand works she had produced during the eighty years she was active as an artist. Four hundred of those works were oils, charcoals, pastels, pencils, and watercolors. Additionally there were more than seven hundred sketches in her personal collection. O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes: The Artist's Collection explores and showcases the significance of Georgia O'Keeffe's collection of her own work and comprises seventy-five seminal works reproduced in full color and dating from around 1910 down through the 1960s. Unique, impressive, O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes is an essential volume for students of American art history in general, and the life and work of Georgia O'Keeffe in particular.

2 comments about Prisoners: Murder, Mayhem, and Petit Larceny.

  1. This is just the kind of morbid and intensely nostalgic book that I expect to write someday. Arne Svenson stumbled upon an incredible cache of abandoned glass plate negatives in an old building in Marysville, California (quite close to the Castle DeSpair, incidentally), many of which were old prisoner photographs that had been taken by town photographer Clara Smith when under contract with the city between 1900 and 1908. Her office had been in the building, which was set to be demolished, which explains why Svenson stumbled upon such a golden cache. The best thing about these pictures was that the name of the criminal and their alleged offence had been scratched directly onto the plates - which allowed a great opportunity for further investigation. By searching crumbling old Marysville newspapers and San Quentin prison records, Svenson was able to piece together the stories behind many of the images - 70 of which are presented in this fascinating book. Unfortunately, many of the stories are of the Petty Larceny variety, rather than the much more interesting murder/assault variety, and that prevents the book from getting a five-star rating on the Morbid-O-Meter, but for fans of prison historical documents and old newspaper clippings, this is quite a find. Due to the photographer's experience in portraiture, most of the images have more of a portrait gallery feel than a mug shot feel, which adds to their period mystique. A beautiful work.

  2. The story of how Arne Svenson found the glass negatives used to produce the images in his book Prisoners is wonderfully told. He discovered a few in an antigue store and was able, over the next few years, to track down hundreds more of these compelling images. The faces of the prisoners pictured so haunted him that he set out to discover who each man was, even though the photographs had been taken nearly 100 years previous. The information he discovered is extensive; through newspaper and legal records of the day he was able to reconstruct the crimes of each of these men. The stories are riveting; a boy of 14 accused and convicted of murder, a one-armed drifter jailed for stealing a blanket, an elderly opium fiend run out of town. But what I found even more moving than the sad stories of these men were the photographs of them. They look more like portraits than mug shots, I find myself going back to look at these faces over and over again. A thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking book. Hopefully Svenson will stumble across another cache of fascinating images soon!
