2 comments about 80 Godey's Full-Color Fashion Plates (1838-1880).
- While it would be rare to find a Godey's book with every fashion print in it, this book gives you an excellent variety of the best dresses from Godey's. The descriptions give an idea of color mixes, fabric and decoration. This book is a great reference tool for the Lady Civil War or Mid-Victorian Reenactor or Costume Designer.
- I have 8 prints that don't appear in the book from 1865-1870. Want to find more info about my prints to include their value (at least an estimate). Pictures in the book are beautiful and pretty true to the actual work...except the real ones have a little "browner" paper. The history in the beginning is also very well done, and helpful in knowing the art. Thanks JoAnne.

1 comments about Art Space Tokyo: An Intimate Guide to the Tokyo Art World.
- This gorgeously illustrated little book takes the reader on a stroll through Tokyo's neighborhoods. Its twenty interviews and half dozen essays successfully mix the voices of artists, gallery owners, journalists, art producers and art lovers.
(Disclaimer: I took part in one of the interviews. By far not my favorite part of the book, but... I am very fond of the rest.)
What really seduced me, however, is how the guide introduces each area with a wealth of tips on where to eat, shop, or what to see on the way to the art spaces. It succeeds not just as valuable insight on how the art world works, but as one of the best guides to date on my favorite city.
Who would I recommend this to? Perhaps not novices to the art world, but to any art professional or lover of Tokyo looking for a different way to roam the city, definitely.

5 comments about Gardner's Art Through the Ages (Non-InfoTrac Version) (Gardner's Art Through the Ages).
- Simply the best art book there is around. It is detailed without being wordy and gives you exactly what you need to know.
- As a high school sophomore using this book as a reference source for art history AP class has been quite an experience. While encompassing many of the major aspects of art history, there are some points it fails to acknowledge and which can only be addressed by a teacher who actually knows his stuff. The only other complaint that at 13 1/2 lbs., it's very hard to trudge up four flights of stairs.
- Short review: ... buy it. If it requires selling vital organs or loved ones to pay for it, it's worth it.
Long review: I enrolled in an Art History course with no idea what I was going to get as a textbook. This book is well-written, intelligent, informative without being overly esoteric, and above all beautiful. The prints are generally in color and always well-reproduced. Historical context is always provided, which gives a solid background for anybody looking to learn about the time any artwork was created. The text also offers insightful commentary about each piece selected for display. This book is so good, in fact, that it's become known as the semi-official Art History 101 textbook. Even if the history's not your thing (and for crying out loud, why not?), the book provides untold hours of beauty. One word: perfection.
- This is lushly detailed book with fine reproductions. However, I found the book to be full of editorial errors and blunders. Why should consumers be asked to pay one-hundred dollars for a book that is this poorly edited? Profits should go towards finding new editorial help. Let's hope the new edition finds someone in charge that is more organized and observant.
- A superb reference book, excellent color reproduction, but too complicated and wordy for a textbook for beginning Art History
students.

5 comments about Haunted Paradise: The Art of Glenn Barr.
- Glenn Barr visited Melbourne, Australia last year (2007) and i was lucky enough to meet him at Outre galley where he had a showing of his work. It was great to see the original paintings close up. His paintings have a lightness of touch that add to their haunting quality. This is an artist who knows when to put down his brushes.
Among the beautiful reproduced paintings there's plenty of close ups, sketches, doodles to pour over.
This book is a simply a must have if you like this art.
- This is a wonderful art book by my favorite of the "lowbrow" artists-- or, as I like to call them, Exploitation Painters. His technique is at once cartoony (he used to do some of the shock paintings for the first season of Ren & Stimpy) and very painterly. His subject matter is a kind of a mix of Tex Avery and Bob Clampett, Jack Hill blaxploitation flicks and a little of the early David Lynch. Wall to wall screwball surrealism against a backdrop of urban decay!
- Just a few pages into this beautiful overview of Barr's work and you'll want to take up residence in this seedy, steamy world he's envisioned. Gorgons, apes, Astroboy, fez-wearing beetles, darkened alleyways in the wrong part of town, ladies of questionable repute - it's all here in this must-have for fans of illustration. Pick up a copy now, but don't say I didn't warn you. You'll be having your mail forwarded tomorrow...
- I discovered Glenn Barr at a bookstore. This book did it. Now he is one of my favorite. I love his style--it's very edgy. It's a great book to add to your collection of art books. I flip through it when I need inspiration.
- Some of his stuff I like a lot, but some will take a little more time. It's actually great art if you're into the darker side of the '60's cocktail scene. The book itself is well done; a nice addition to any alcoholic's bar top.

4 comments about Cecilia Beaux: American Figure Painter.
- A number of years ago I enrolled into an art history course at my local community college, Women in Art. I was suprised, awed and sorry never to have known about some of the women artists when studying art at a university. Shadwoed by the likes of John Singer Sargent, Cecila Beaux can hold her own. Many female artists did not have the same advantages as their male counterparts. But Ms. Beaux built up her own cliental making her own name in the art of portraiture. This is a nice book depicitng the lifestylies of Americana during the age of innocence. A must have for any coffee table. Nice instruction on another American female artisits almost lost in history.
- Though thorough, the many author's perspectives were not pleasing. Beautiful work by an amazing artist and the reproductions were acceptable but not thrilling.
- I think that this book shows a lot of Cecilia's work very well. The essays are very nice to read too.
- While Cecilia Beaux is often overlooked, she was a great American figure painter, close to, if not quite in the same league, as John Singer Sargent. This book has good representation of her work, the more well know, and the lesser. A must have of anyone who is a fan of this period and style of art.

5 comments about Art:21: Art in the Twenty-First Century 4 (Art in the Twenty-First Century).
- I am a practicing artist and really enjoyed listening to other artists share themselves and their art in a very intimate and informative format,
- This book was required for my Contemporary Art class. Great pictures....the accompaning DVD goes into more depth about each artist and provides more info about each artist than does the book.
- This is an excellent book and an excellent series for anyone who wants to know more about art being creating today. My Art History professor uses this book at the text book for her Contemporary Art class. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in seeing art history in the making.
- I am a faithful follower of this series, and use the dvds in my contemporary art history class. The companion books make wonderful text to supplement the television series.
- I have the first two books in the series and hope to spend the rest of my life watching the PBS program and looking and thinking about the artwork presented both on video and in the beautifully crafted texts.
