1 comments about Frederic, Lord Leighton: Eminent Victorian Artist.

  1. A well-presented book; and most interesting details of the artist's life an times. Slight disappointment in the plates - not all in colour and not full-page size. It is however, an extensive look at the artist and his work, I believe worth owning if you are interested in the genre. Not so interested myself in the sculpture side of his work and the small black and white photos of same do not show from all angles, but in general a good purchase.

2 comments about Landscape Inspirations: A Collection of Drawing and Painting Ideas for Artists (Inspirations Series).

  1. A very nice book. Got it as a gift from a friend and whenever I am too caught up with life & such, this book reminds me to set up the easel and paint. Lots of pictures, lots of inspiration that comes from looking and observing good art. Not a 'techniques' book, so if you are looking for instruction suggest picking up a manual, this one is all about inspiration.

  2. The title is misleading. The book contains a collection of paintings...only. The only text in the book is that in the captions for the paintings. The captions contain only such info as the name of the work, the artist, and (sometimes) the medium. Techniques, etc are not discussed. The "ideas," if any, are those which you may get from looking at the pictures.

The painting are presented in color and include a wide range of sytles and mediums. If you are looking for a collection of pictures, this is it. If you want more info, keep looking.

3 comments about Splash 4: The Splendor of Light (Splash).

  1. Each Splash book in Rachel Rubin Wolf's series has a specific theme; Splash 4 is about light.

109 watercolorists are represented in the book with their work in color and a small excerpt about their method, ideas, and execution of the painting. It is very inspiring and helpful to look at the array of paintings.

The light and shadows in this book are the highlight.

  2. Ms Rubin Wolf is a master at assembling a dizzying array of various art styles. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately for me, I already know what I like - representative art with an eye toward good color harmony. I purchased the book hoping it would elevate my portrayal of light and shade. This book did not meet this quest.

  3. This was the first Splash book I had seen and I've now purchased all of them. As a newby to watercolor I have to say this is the most inspiring book on watercolor I have ever seen. The book includes 109 different artist's and, true to the title, all pics display spectacular ways of dealing with light as the focal point of the painting. Whenever I'm stuck for an idea, a quick review of this book has me rushing for my paints.
