1 comments about New York, New York: The City in Art and Literature.
- Not quite an anthology, not nearly a history, and yet, in its own way, a very satisfactory sampler of New York culture and history. Introduced by the indefatigable Brooke Astor, "New York, New York; The City in Art abd Literature" gives you little tastes of the different eras, neighborhoods, and peoples that have populated this monumental city. Don't look for any depth or probing information here; this is strictly for the coffee table. Still, the quality of the prints and the printing is superior, and the literary selections are a little off the beaten path--which makes the book more interesting than one would think.

1 comments about The Crucifixion in Irish Art.
- The Crucifixion in Irish Art presents 50 examples, from 800AD to the 20th century. A full page photograph faces a single page of text, for each. Most are black and white photographs with four or five color plates depicting stained glass representations and contemporary oils. Yet so much in such a small book! The introduction places the art works in Irish history from the Celts on to today. The development of the crucifix as art is emphasized, as one is compared with the following. It was my good luck to stumble on this volume in Ireland and it inspired much of my trip as I plugged through fields, disturbing cattle, to locate some of the original crucifixes in the book.

1 comments about Wade Schuman: Aspects of View.
- Wade Schuman is one of the most interesting representational painters working today. He uses the techniques of the past to create timeless narratives. Schuman's influences range the gamut of 17th century art, especially Dutch genre painting. His still-lifes are absolutely sublime. Schuman exhibits regularly at the Forum Gallery in New York.
If you are at all interested in the art of his contemporaries, such as Odd Nerdrum, Alexis Rockman, Vincent Desiderio, or Bo Bartlett, you should certainly check out this inexpensive introduction to his work.
