1 comments about Made in China: Export Porcelain from the Leo and Doris Hodroff Collection at Winterthur (Winterthur Book).

  1. This is a wonderful book, cataloging an amazing exhibit. The writing is clear, informative and interesting and the images are beautifully photographed. Anyone interested in porcelain or even decorative arts more generally should certainly buy this book, written by an up and coming curator and the leading expert in the field. This book would make a great gift.

2 comments about The Art of Walter Anderson.

  1. I purchased this book in 2004 after the big Anderson exhibit came through Memphis. As a sometime Mississippian, I gave his alphabet block prints to my wedding attendants and my child had a Walter Anderson nursery. Now, in 2007, I am especially glad to have this since Hurricane Katrina devastated Ocean Springs and the Anderson family's repository of his work. The New Orleans Museum of Art, Mississippi Museum of Art, and collectors still have many of the pieces, but for me, this book is a record of many pieces that I'll never be able to see again.

  2. This full size book is yet another wonderful addition to the growing body of literature on this naturalist and classically-trained artist from the Gulf Coast. The large size allows nice display of many of his paintings, drawings, and other pieces. The essays are a good introduction to his life and contributions. Those who love nature and are fascinated by the relationship of people and wild things will treasure Anderson. If this is your first contact, your next stop will be the Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, MS -- and bring your camping gear and binocs because you're going to want to go to Horn Island (now part of Gulf Islands National Seashore) and see it for yourself.

2 comments about Cy Twombly: New Sculptures 1992-2005.

  1. This is an execallent publication with good essays and images , giving an in depth view of these poignant works and the pulse behind them, and of the Artist Cy Twombly who has captured the human spirit in the most eloquent way possible .
I am thrilled to have this book, another to my collection from Amazon.
    Great service and prompt delivery.

  2. A beautiful book on an interesting recent development in Cy Twombly's career. Even though his earliest known sculptures date back to the late fifties, he really concentrated on the medium after 1990, producing a serene body of works marked by a thick white impasto covering common objects, found here and there, mounted together to form elegant and sometimes majestic sculptures. A good supplement to the Catalogue Raisonné (which stops in 1995). My only criticism would be on the text, which sometimes tends to be a bit too hagiographic; the admiration professed by the authors towards the artist seems almost religious, however, like every great artist, Twombly has produced masterpieces, but also some minor works...

2 comments about Rubens: A Master in the Making (National Gallery London Publications).

  1. Ther first time I saw this title was @ the National Gallery.
It was a very impresive book; unfortunately, I was not able to buy it that time; now that I see it here I get it, and my first impresion is that this one is way way smaller than the other one; anyway, just opening this book you start admiring this great person, if you are just discovering him, this is a very good start.
If you already heard of him, will be a great asset in your collection.

  2. The greatest achievement of this book is its numerous large, high quality color prints (No annoying B&W reproductions). There is not a page in this book wihout a reproduction, whether it be a painting or one of the many drawings, there is always something of Rubens' to amaze your eyes. The text is acceptable though it gets a bit redundant and mundane at times, and its main concern is explaining the ontogeny of Rubens' work in his early career. The book continually maps the creation of works from drawing to oil sketch to final painting and also compares the different treatments of the same subject in Rubens' youthful ouvre. For example the three different versions of The Battle of the Amazons that Rubens painted. The book is primarily concerned with the "making of a master" and know that it only presents works from early in his career beginning just before his eight year peregrinations through Italy and Spain to about 1617. Despite some of the texts shortcomings this book is well worth having for its beautiful prints and infomative discussion of Rubens' creative process and some of his major influences.
