1. This is a great book for the Russel Wright collector who wants to know more of the backstory and history of the man and the pottery. But do not confuse this book with a collector's guide. This book will probably not help you to decide if a piece is RW or not, and certainly will not help in pricing or deciding rarity.



2. This book is a great compliment to the exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt, but more than that. The information here is not more of the same, of what's already been said about Wright in other books. Although some overlap is necessary to tell his story, there are many new details of his design life and philosophy, and marvelous photos of some of his products and drawings, not seen other books. There are also great pictures of Mary as well. I feel that this book was very sensitively done and that all involved in creating it (and the exhibit) deserve applause. It would be hard to imagine any R.W. fan not loving this book.

Catalogues of exhibits and collection have always been a wonderful source of knowledge and this one is superior even in this elite category. The collection's goal has been to represent the period from 1825-1917 in American Decorative Art with masterpieces whose superior quality is matched by their historical significance. This goal is key to this book as a major focus in not just the object but the history of the manufacture or of those involved in the object. With a total of 227 objects arranged chronologically by style, this book is a wonderful reference for this period.

1. A number of years ago I enrolled into an art history course at my local community college, Women in Art. I was suprised, awed and sorry never to have known about some of the women artists when studying art at a university. Shadwoed by the likes of John Singer Sargent, Cecila Beaux can hold her own. Many female artists did not have the same advantages as their male counterparts. But Ms. Beaux built up her own cliental making her own name in the art of portraiture. This is a nice book depicitng the lifestylies of Americana during the age of innocence. A must have for any coffee table. Nice instruction on another American female artisits almost lost in history.



2. Though thorough, the many author's perspectives were not pleasing. Beautiful work by an amazing artist and the reproductions were acceptable but not thrilling.



3. I think that this book shows a lot of Cecilia's work very well. The essays are very nice to read too.



4. While Cecilia Beaux is often overlooked, she was a great American figure painter, close to, if not quite in the same league, as John Singer Sargent. This book has good representation of her work, the more well know, and the lesser. A must have of anyone who is a fan of this period and style of art.

1. This book is full of gorgeous photographs of Indonesian textiles - it's an amazing read!

A superbly presented work of seminal scholarship, "The Art Of Indonesian Textiles" by Brigitte Khan Majlis (Curator of Textiles at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum of Ethnography in Cologne, Germany) is a joint publishing project of The Art Institute Of Chicago and the Yale University Press. Showcasing exquisite examples of the batik and ikat techniques associated with Indonesian textiles enhancing the informed and informative essays, "The Art Of Indonesian Textiles" is enhanced with the inclusion of almost seventy examples drawn from the Bakwin Collection. Many of these textiles were made for ceremonial use, playing prominent roles in rituals marking key moments in the lives of individuals and their communities. The complexity of patterns and the techniques used to make them are among the finest examples of textile art to be found anywhere in the world. From Sumatran skirts (tapis), to a Javanese head scarf (kain kaligrafi) the range of the garments is simply impressive and reflect artistic and cultural influences from China, India, Europe, and the Middle East.
