2 comments about United States Navy Scrapbook (Military Scrapbook Series).

  1. I just want to say the Navy scrap book, was a great purchase and it had more in it then the ones you purchase from a store and the price was way cheaper then the store also. keep up the good work amazon.com.
This was not my first purchase from amazon.com, I go to amazon.com first before e-bay or any other shops and I find that amazon.com is where I end up purchasing my items from.
    Thank You
    Carol

  2. I bought this scrapbook, elsewhere and paid more, but it's fantastic! I designed this gift to give to my husband for his last birthday. I contacted an old ship-mate (USS GRANT) and received photos, anecdotes, etc. to place in the album. It came out great and the album just helped to enhance the whole "picture!"
I highly recommend this album for your Navy scrapbooking. There are so many stickers and embellishments out now, it's so easy to commemorate those Navy experiences!

1 comments about Collector's Guide to World War 2 German Medals.

  1. This book is a concise, standard reference work for Third Reich medal and badge collectors. Sadly, this field is a veritable minefield for collectors with fakes/copies/reproductions now possibly outnumbering original items. With reproduction techniques daily becoming more sophisticated (as prices soar), it is vital to use this work as a basic identification guide, but not as an absolute final authority of an items' originality. Especially useful is the organizational listing of badges and medals by types (e.g. Luftwaffe badges, Army badges, campaign medals, gallantry medals etc.) with a list of known manufacturers' contract LDO numbers, along with estimated numbers of badges/medals awarded. Information provided is limited by space and this can be frustrating as many awards (the Iron Cross for example) easily provide enough variation to require a complete book. The photos are crisp, but frustratingly small. The author is especially fond of the Eagle Order (once awarded to Lindburgh) and this section of the book is the most complete and well done. A number of very rare items are included (e.g. The Dunkirk Shield) but the overall effectiveness of the work is marred by the inclusion of several unawarded badges (the Army Balloon Observers' badge, the Luftwaffe Sea assault badge, the Balkan Shield) and outright fakes (e.g. the Lorient shield, type 1). While the author does often point out that these questionable medals/badges are rare and sometimes suspect, the collecting community would have been better served by a more complete treatment of these items. Several novice collectors I have met have sadly spent large sums of money on copies made in the 1960s, stating that they felt sure they were a rare and valuable find because they saw them in this book. Sadly, the authenticity of even a number of the items on the actual cover of the book has been questioned by medal historians. Overall this is a book worth having, but not a definitive work on the subject.

5 comments about A Collector's Guide to Third Reich Militaria.

  1. This is a great book for the novice Third Reich collector. It covers all sorts of items with detailed information. Easy to read and has lots of pictures of the items. The pictures are in black and white and would be better in colour. Great book for beginners.

  2. I suppose as a very general overview it might be useful. Third Reich Militaria is a very vast field. A detailed handbook would probably be more like the Oxford English Dictionary than a 'handbook.' Still, much of the information about values seems somewhat outdated based on my research. I guess overall it's not a bad book, just FAR too small to be very useful to a collecter. You will definately need other material to supplement this book, no question.

  3. An absolutely essential book for collector of Third Reich militaria, and the fakes that abound from the internet auction houses. Don't waste your money on out of date publications, this is the one to own.

  4. This book is a great introduction to the great hobby of collecting German Militaria. It discusses a wide variety of items giving brief insight on each. It even goes into some detail on reproduction items and how to spot them. Once you decide what area you want to specialize in there are many books out there. But take it from me, this is the one to start you off.

  5. Although its getting a bit dated(for pricing, I only wish we could by at these prices) Lumsden is truly an expert, he includes alot of good info on ferreting out fakes. An overall great reference, its small size makes it great for taking along to shows & flea markets, etc.

5 comments about G.I. COLLECTORS GUIDE: Army Service Forces Catalog: US Army European Theater of Operations.

  1. Important and majestic book regarding all material and items used by GI in WWII; extremely important for beginning collectors and modellers.

  2. This is the most in depth book I have found in color on the subject of European Theater American WWII collectibles. This is my most favorite book on the subject and I highly recommend it if you are getting started in this hobby. It accompanies me to all shows I attend. But be careful, with more knowledge, comes the a greater want to buy the stuff! Highly recommended!

  3. I have collected since the early 70's and still don't know it all but this book tells me everything I need to know for the ETO. Would like to see the same book put out for the pacific theater. This book covers everything from the simpelest of items to the most advanced items for collectors. A must have for the military collector. This book is used by the National Veterans Memorial Museum for reference in their collection.

  4. As a World War II reenactor, there have been plenty of times when I've wanted to double check the information on a particular item. I'd seen this book for sale at a couple of shows, but shied away from the price. Finding it at Amazon for much less sealed the deal.

Want to ID a division patch? Need to know where the "U.S." pin belongs on the service coat? Found a old military wool overcoat in the closet and want to know more about it? These questions and much more can be answered with this fantastic book. It has helped me several times, both before and after a militaria purchase. Dress uniforms, cold weather gear, equipment, weapons... everything you'd expect and everything you wouldn't. Gear for chaplains, female personnel, signal corps, engineers. Want to know what a Medical Department food tray looked like? Snow shoes by the Mountain troops? How about a company field desk? Chemical Department gloves? Ever wonder about what kind of cigarettes were included with the rations? Wonder no more. Just about the only area the book doesn't cover is anything to do with the Army Air Forces, which is a pity.

If I had known about the treasure trove of information that this book held within it's pages, I'd have scooped it up years ago. I anticipate using it for research for years to come.

  5. This book was recommended to me by a fellow US Army collector / enthusiast. It gives superb descriptions of each item, as well as detailed pictures. Since purchasing this book, I have realised just how valuable some of my collection is - & have also discovered the history behind some items that I thought were not that important. A must for any US Army enthusiast.

3 comments about Knives 2006.

  1. I have every edition of the "KNIVES" annuals since the first one came out in 1980. As a knifemaker and collector I like to keep up with the state-of-the art knives that these amazing makers present in this book. The photos are plentiful and the paper quality of these softcover books has greatly improved since editor Joe Kertzman has taken over the helm. If you like knives in all their glory, then all of these books are highly recommended. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I feel that Mr. Kertzman gets a little "ornate" in some of his descriptions. Let the knives speak for themselves, Joe. Hee hee.

  2. Not the book I wanted. I wanted a book listing Case and Buck knives values. My mistake.

  3. I decided to buy this book basing on the pictures of the knives inside. Once received, the pictures are worth more than the price I have paid for. Details with each knife is the extra bonus to the owner. Very good especially for custom knife collectors, and myself as a trader on ebay's -unclevit- listing store. I will buy more from this writer, perhaps every year. Recommend. Good Value.

1 comments about Wearing Propaganda: Textiles on the Home Front in Japan, Britain, and the United States (Published in Association with the Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture).

  1. An intensively researched, tightly written, extensively documented study of patriotic and propaganda textiles developed by the major players during WW II and the years immediately before it. The acknowledgements page alone reflects the author's interaction with many of the leading lights in textile research today. Highly recommended!

2 comments about World War 2 German War Booty a Study in Photographs (Schiffer Military History).

  1. Every now and then you come across a book that you cannot put down for various reasons, be it the storyline, the photos or the topic. This is one of those books that has all three of the above.
It shows in fine colour photographs, and large ones at that, some very very rare militairia "liberated" by vets and brought back home.
All types of trophies seem to have been secured such as Hats, medals, daggers, swords, firearms and uniforms to name a few and all are shown in excellent detail.
Printed on fine glossy paper for excellent photographic reproduction it also shows US soldiers liberating, trading or searching for Third Reich artifacts which I found fascinating.
Collectors from around the world have opened up their collections to the author for a very rare insight into authnetic Nazi memrobilia which few if us will ever see in our lifetime.
I agree with the previous reviewer if you are a collector or do have an interest in the third reich paraphenalia this is a must have and worth every penny

  2. This book is a great read-through for anyone who is interested in either militaria collecting or a general appreciation of the second world war. The one aspect of this books that sets it above the rest is its documentation of GI's taking these things back up, which is shown through several example photographs. I reccomend this book, yes the price may be high, but if you are interested in seeing amazing items like Hitler's famous "brown shirt", and a very large selection of other personalities, such as Goering, Himmler, and many others!!! Overall a wonderful book that is a great photo history!

2 comments about Switchblades Of Italy.

  1. This is great book, full scale color pictures. great historical information of vintage switchblades knives from italy.
    highly recommended.

  2. The serious collector as well as the curious automatic knife buyer will find this author's work to be extensive on the subject of Italian Automatic Knives. With 128 pages, including high resolution photography of "tang stamps," this title covers topics ranging from the evolution of the automatic knife in Italian production to the ignoble standing this type of cutlery has been labeled with by the media over the years. Detailed information on specific manufacturers and the history of these companies give the reader specific information that is not easily found elsewhere, proving this book to be an invaluable source of information for the collector seeking to authenticate rare Italian Stilettos. A must for the knife collector or dealer.

1 comments about MAIN BATTLE TANK T-80 (Russian Armour).

  1. Mikhail Baryatinskiy does a great job of covering the development and operation of this important modern Russian AFV.

The chapters of this book are as follows:

    Tank Development History
    Production and Upgrade (T-80 - T-80 BV)
    Production and Modernization (T-80U - T-80 UD)
    Combat Employment
    From T-80U to Black Eagle

This book contains the most detailed analysis of the T-80 tank up close. The book is replete with very detailed black and white photographs of the tank up close along with excellent colored plates, scaled drawings, and colored photographs. It is a dream come true for modellers and tank buffs!

The info I found most interesting was the combat performance of the T-80. The biggest full-scale use of the T-80 in combat by the Russian army was in the Chechnya conflict in 1995-1996. As the author describes, the T-80 was used inappropriately by the Russian army without adequate training and no ERA armor on the tanks. Consequently, they were vulnerable to the RPGs and anti-armor missiles fired by the Chechnyans. The T-80 was even less survivable than the T-72 on certain conditions, but the T-80 costs so much more than the T-72!

The last 10 pages of the book offers some amazing colored photographs of the upgraded T-80U tank.

Even though this book is pricier than most tank books, it is well worth the cost. If you're a tank buff, a military AFV historian, or a modeller, you would love this book! Highly recommended.
