1 comments about A Book of Five Swords and a Scroll.

  1. I was given a copy of the book by the author which I reviewed. Although the book is advertised as a "Paperback," it is an 8.5 x 11 inch soft cover book of 144 pages. It contains many photographs, maps and diagrams to provide the history of the Japanese swords, and the five swords that are the topic of the book. The author added a chapter on M/Sgt R. M. June, USMC, taken prisoner on Wake Island when that island fell to the Japanese on December 23, 1942. The author also includes a chapter care and cleaning of Japanese swords and an appendix.

The photos and graphics make this book a worthwhile addition the library of anyone interested in Japanese history, Japanese swords, and the chapter on M/Sgt. June.

5 comments about Mauser Military Rifle Markings.

  1. Far from a boring catalogue of markings and symbols, this is a fascinating collection of articles about world languages, their scripts, and how to read them. Presented along with alphabetical and numerical keys, the is a most interesting text to read, giving insights into unexpected matters as diverse as rifle origins, language origins and how to gain a glimmer of understanding about both.

    C Forsyth

  2. As a german collector of Mauser rifles I found in this book a lot of unknown details. So now I knew a lot more about my rifles. I think every Mauser collector should own this book.

    Jürgen

  3. great book it helped me get answers for the markings i had on my collectors mauser

  4. This isn't a book for the beginner or a general text about the Mauser rifle. It is, however, a superior identification guide that is small enough to fit into a jacket pocket when heading out to look at a potential purchase.

The author manages to cram information about every single major type of Mauser rifle into this small book, including succinct but complete identifications of all the markings you are likely to find. The section detailing all of the various Waffenampts and inspectors marks and which factories they belonged to at different times has proven invaluable to me personally, allowing me to spot a couple of "all matching" guns at gunshows that were actually much less valuable "force matched" rifles.

It isn't a book for casually perusing pictures of these rifles or learning about the history of the gun. It is a collector's reference book and should be used as such. But if you own even one Mauser and want to identify what that mystery stamping means, this will do it, and if you continue to collect them this book will help you avoid many common scams and pitfalls.

  5. Mr. Lapin translation are very inaccurate. I woudn't pay a dime for this book.
