1 comments about Reminiscences of Confederate Service, 1861-1865 (Library of Southern Civilization).
- A personable memoir of a young Londoner who ran the blockade in order to fight for the Confederacy. Dawson's account of sailing as an utter landlubber (but a fan of Marryat's novels) is among the best parts of the book, amusing and anecdotal. Learning quickly, Dawson joined the CS Navy but quickly transferred to the artillery as an ordnance officer for first Longstreet and then Fitz Lee. His book includes Pickett's Charge, a not very vivid account of Longstreet's Burnside impersonation (versus Burnside!) at Fort Sanders, and the friendly-fire incident at the Wilderness that killed the brilliant young Micah Jenkins and badly wounded Longstreet. Not a deeply informative memoir, but a well-written and appealing one.

3 comments about Road Hunter in the Land between the Rivers: Disillusioned Hearts and Minds.
- "Lew," as he was known to me, Sgt Leptien, did an outstanding job puting this book together. Everything that was wrote was real, and accually gave me a few 'flashbacks' to somethings I once forgot. My family appriciates the book very much, since it was the best way for them to know what we did. Good Job Lew! Road Hunter 16
- I thought this was a great book. It did a good job of making the experience real to the reader. You get a real sense of how things are over there for the soldiers and what they are going through.
- Being in Iraq with James and being a part of one of the Roadhunter Teams, James does a very good job of telling how life in Iraq was for us. This book gives a first hand view of the good we encountered and the "pain in the butt" moments. It also shares the moments when we all wish we could be home with our loved ones.

3 comments about Voices of My Comrades: America's Reserve Officers Remember World War II (World War II: The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension).
- Compiled and edited by Carol Adele Kelly (Project Officer and Copy Editor of 'The Officer' magazine), "Voices of My Comrades: America's Reserve Officers Remember World War II" is a collection of written experiences by members of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States (the nation's oldest such professional military organization) in a special project undertaken over a five year period. This remarkable 547-page anthology of anecdotal stories contributed by 240 veterans track the four years of World War II month by month, representing all the war-time theaters, and come from men of all ranks and from all services - including personal accounts by Women Airforce Service Pilots. Enhanced with the inclusion of photographs, a chronology, and an informative historical introduction, "Voices of My Comrades" is a seminal work that ranges from personal accounts of survival, Nazi extermination camps, and the bombing of unmarked Japanese ships transporting American POWs from the Philippines near the war's end. Simply stated, "Voices of My Comrades" is a superbly informative addition to any personal, academic, or community library World War II military reference collection.
- This book includes over 200 stories written by the men and women who served in World War 2. Many thousands of our WW2 vets die each year and this book has preserved the stories of those who recount their experiences. This is a must have book for historians, war buffs, those who have served in any conflict. It is a great read!!
- Voices of my Comrades is a compelling and gripping account from the men that stood in the face evil and didn't back down. It's not your typical "war stories" book, Voices of my Comrades allows you to walk side-by-side with those in the trenches, on the battelfield, in the infermary, and in the midst of the fight. You feel the action, the fear, the heroism, and the tears, as these men pave their way into history and Carol Kelly does a trmendous job allowing you into their hearts, minds, and soul. Great book. I highly recommend it to the war historian on down to those just trying to appreciate the price that was paid for our freedom. It's a great read and a for the depth and beauty of this book it's priced at a steal. My humble opinion gives this one 5 stars and a high recommendation. Nicely done.

1 comments about Horatio Gates; Defender Of American Liberties.
- This book is so biased in favor of Gates, a man of very debatable reputation and capabilities, that it is virtually worthless. Patterson becomes a contortionist in his transparent attempts to rehabilitate Gates, missing many of the key details with sloppy mistakes and poor analysis. The only reason I gave this one star is because I could not give it zero stars.

1 comments about Architects of Our Fortunes: The Journal of Eliza A.W. Otis, 1860-1863, with Letters and Civil War Journal of Harrison Gray Otis.
- My review may be somewhat prejudiced because Ann Condon and I collaborated on our books. Ann has taken the diaries and correspondence of two literary figures from southern California whose writing efforts may have started in the mountains of West Virginia during the Civil War and put them together in a fine book. Dr. Condon sets the stage for the works of Harrison Gray and Eliza Otis with an introduction to this husband and wife team. The diary of Eliza Otis is particularly well writen and a wonderful insight to a woman's view of the Civil War. Her descriptions of the wild country of the Kanawha, New and Gauley River country of West Virginia are exceptional. What is sad from a historian's perspective is that these writers did not continue their diaries beyond the summer of 1863 or that they are not available. This wonderful book provides a view of the Civil War beyond battles and campaigns giving a wonderful insight of the time.

4 comments about On Boyington's Wing: The Wartime Journals of Black Sheep Squadron Fighter Ace Lt. Col. Robert W. McClurg.
- A thorough and entertaining book about the famous Black Sheep Squadron by one who lived it. McClurg's reproduction of the actual combat reports and telling of actual missions gives a great insight to the most famous Marine Aviation Squadron of WWII, VMF 214, The Black Sheep Squadron.
- After reading other books on the Black Sheep, I was quite disappointed with this book. While it was interesting to see the Combat Action Reports reprinted, the rest of the combat accounts are quite dull. Research done by Bruce Gamble shows that many statements made by McClurg are factually inaccurate. There are some interesting anecdotes and pictures, including a picture that shows that Boyington clearly lied about his plane being named "Lulubelle," but overall, I was glad that I borrowed the book from the library instead of paying money for it.
- The other day I saw a copy of robert mcclurgs book at my grandmothers and was excited to see it. As a former army man stationed in germany i love the history of our armed forces. Also ,I remebered the show in the 70's with robert conrad and loved it. I think this is great timing for this book because of whats goin on in the the world today. Plus its good to know the truth about black sheep squadron as the tv show portrayed a different light on it. A must read for all military buffs!!!
- My father was chief test pilot for the Navy and excepted the first F4U from Igor himself. Someday, I will write a book. Bob's account adds a new perspective for me, combat, one I never got from my father or experienced personally. Great job Bob. Thanks again for the book. CW2 Mark Michael USAR (Ret.)Syracuse, NY

1 comments about Combat Reporter: Don Whitehead's World War II Diary And Memoirs.
- Edited by University of Tennessee-Knoxville teacher John B. Romeiser, Combat Reporter: Don Whitehead's World War II Diary and Memoirs is the true story of two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Don Whitehead, who served the Associated Press in 1942 by covering the Allied drive against Erwin Rommel's tanks in North Africa, in Whitehead's own words. Collecting and organizing Whitehead's personal journal and unfinished memoir with the rare editor's note in brackets for clarity, Combat Reporter covers events that Whitehead witnessed from 1942-1943 in Cairo, Libya, Tunisia, and Sicily. Combat Reporter offers an evenhanded, front-lines view of the European Theater and an unforgettable self-portrait of a one-of-a-kind reporter. A foreword by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Rick Atkinson and an afterword by Whitehead's colleague Command Sergeant Major Benjamin Franklin (U.S. Army, Ret.) round out this highly recommended memoir.
