  1. Excellent book, I really enjoyed it, wonderful book an a wonderful writer, I heared a bout many, many years ago and I never had the chance to get it before.
    I really recomend it

  1. It is perfect! Jorge Luis Borges is one of the greatest of his kind. This book really proves it!

  2. I should have started reading Borges years ago. Better late than never, though.

The theme of ambiguity permeates this book. It might be most blatant in 'The Form of the Sword' or 'The Garden of Forking Paths,' where a comment at the end of the story changes the meaning of all that went before. 'The Garden' also contains a symmetry of time and space, where diverging futures appear as a decision points in a maze, endless choices about whci path to take. Then, 'The Garden' also echoes 'An Examination of the Work of Herbert Quain.' In the former, multiple futures radiate outward from a unitary present moment; in the latter, multiple possible histories converge on the here and now, changing the meaning of the present by changing the context from which it arose.

'An Examination' also ties to the stunning 'Library of Babel' through its base in the written word - or in the unwritten word, since both address works that never existed. 'Library' leaves the reader with many conflicting impressions. For me, though, the one that dominates is wonder at the idea that, among all possible arrangements of marks on pages, so infinitesimally few carry meaning at all. Then, even among those few, far fewer have depth and ability to touch a reader at different levels. Perhaps, though, the real marvel is the mind that attaches meaning to those words - the mind of any reader.

  3. Un libro inolvidable que me adentró en el mundo laberíntico y apasionante de borges indispensable en cuanlquier biblioteca.

  4. Jorge Luis Borges (1899 - 1986) was one of the greatest Argentinean's writers of all times. Since 1970 he was candidate to Nobel Literature Prize, which he never attained. In 1980 he was bestowed Cervantes Prize, the Spanish major literary award. He influenced two generations of Latin American writers. Even those who despised him as "elitist writer" admired his powerful imagination and writing skills.

Jorge Luis was born in a high-class family. He was bilingual; due to his English grandmother (he also knew several other idioms, but not as fluently as this two). He moved with his parents to Europe where he resided from 1914 till 1921. When he returned to Argentina he fells in love with Buenos Aires. This love affaire begot several poetry volumes and inspired him many stories.
Borges was an omnivorous reader with a wide range of interests: from Cabbala thru Golems; from Mythology thru Gaucho's hardships; from Immortality thru Infinite; from Buddhism thru Christianity. His tales reflect all these interest.

The present volume encompasses two of his earlier stories collections: "The Garden of Forking Paths" (1941) and "Fictions" (1944) and constitute a fair sample of his writings and style.
"The Babylon Lottery" describes an improbable world, ruled by fate embodied in a lottery game. "Funes the Memorious" elaborates on what happens if a person may recall every instant of his whole life. "The Garden of Forking Paths" is an elegant detective's story. "The Library of Babel", is one of Borge's best known texts, where he speculate on an infinite library containing every volume of human literature and gave way to mathematical speculation.
In other tales the reader will get in touch with some themes very dear to Borges: mirrors, treason, solitary Hero, multiple divergent versions of the same character, a whole universe created ex nihlo from his imagination and more much more.

If you like fantasy you probably will fall in love with this book and search for more Borge's works. If you don't like fantasy you may be hooked by a prose rich in images and a powerful literary and philosophical imagination.
Give this book a chance, you will no be disappointed!

5 comments about Short Stories in Spanish: New Penguin Parallel Text (New Penguin Parallel Texts) (Spanish and English Edition).

  1. There's probably no way to succesfully format this type of book for the Kindle (perhaps on the DX), and Amazon should have the sense to not publish one.

  2. This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). If you are at an intermediate level of Spanish, and can understand basic conversations and make yourself understood in most situations then this dual-language book is an enjoyable challenge to your Spanish reading skills.

You will need to have a strong grasp of Spanish grammar and verbs to be able to read the stories without checking a reference book each page, but the English translation provides a complete reference. The more advanced your Spanish is, the less you will need to rely on the translation. For this reason the book can be a useful tool in judging how your studies are progressing. Reading the book in one month may prove tedious as you have to look up many words, while a few months later you may discover that you are able to read easily without needing to refer to the English version too much.

The stories are by notable authors such as Allende, G. Garcia Marquez, and Fuentes, and the English translations are true to the feeling and overall tone of the original Spanish, even when it is at the cost of providing a less literal translation. This is itself is an interesting element to the book, making you think about how context can affect word choice.

A variety of Spanish speaking countries are represented in the choice of authors, so that readers are exposed to a variety of different cultures and styles of language. Historical or cultural references are included throughout the stories to give you a better understanding of the overall context, and there is even a brief bio of each author.

At the start of the book, the stories are easier, written mostly in the present tense and in simple straightforward language. The further into the book you read, the more difficult the stories become, using more complex verb tenses and advanced vocabulary. This makes the book an ideal companion to students who are moving forward in their Spanish language studies, as it caters for many different levels of ability.

Each story includes notes to help explain some of the points in the language, which adds an extra level of learning to the book. There are also exercises at the back to practice what you have learned.

In closing my review of this product, I'd like to share with you the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish. If you are truly serious about achieving fluency, I'd recommend getting all 3 of them if you can afford it.

    1. Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This is actually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasent to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.

    2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity

    3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitions entirely in Spanish. I use this one mainly because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish. According to him, this is the "standard" among university level Spanish professors.

  3. This book is a bit above my level, but I'm close enough that I can get a few sentences in before I have to read the translation on the right page, then a few more sentences, then check the translation. Then I go back and re-read the paragraph and it all suddenly makes sense. This is definitely giving my rusty Spanish skills a good workout. The stories are written by "real" writers, not Spanish textbook writers, so that's a big plus. The translations are not word for word, they capture the meaning of each sentence. That's fine by me as once I get the idea of the sentence and go back to the Spanish, it makes sense. I start to notice a cognate I missed the first time, or some other clue I missed to the meaning. Good practice. Great book.

  4. I wanted a book to help me to learn spanish. I'm about 1/3 through it and its great! Stories are quick reads with very real and complex translations. It's a book in parallel text as promised. It is serving it's purpose. Get it!

  5. I will add that if you are looking for light reading this may not be for you. This is "real" literature and requires some concentration. IMHO intermediates will find the stories challenging to read in Spanish and beginners may give up (although the English translations are worth reading as well). My favorite story was Maria dos Prazeres.

4 comments about Charlotte's Web (Spanish edition): La telarana de Carlota.

  1. I haven't read Charlotte's web in English, and I chose it to practice reading in Spanish as one of the first books... after all that's how I got fluent in English.

    it was great!

    Beautiful, well-told story.

  2. I have read this story several times in my adult life and, since I am studying Spanish, I wanted to read it in that language as well (with an English copy close at hand for reference.)

I am delighted to own my Spanish copy of Charlotte's Web.

    T. William Waltrip, M.D.

  3. Justo el libro que le quieres leer a tu hija por las noches.

  4. Yo le recomiendo este libro a todos que quieren regresar a su infancia. Yo estoy muy encantada con este libro. La historia de Carlota es mejor. También intentar Los Reinos Y Los Elfos De Las Quimeras.

5 comments about Ingles para Latinos (Spanish Edition).

  1. This is a great book for those Spanish-speakers that are trying to learn to communicate in English. With its pronunciation illustrations, beginners can relate the English spellings to their pronunciations. This will also be a good resource for those that are teaching basic conversational English courses, etc. This is my first experience with this book, but I can see where I will be using much of its content in the adult classes I will be teaching. Am looking forward to exploring the second level book, which I will be getting shortly.

  2. So many choices in this venue. I think it would be best to review some in a book store to determine if your choice suits your audience.

  3. This is an excellent book to teach english as a second language and it also helps english speaking persons to learn spanish. It arrived in excellent condition and speedily.

  4. There are better books and websites out there. Only buy this book if you can get it at a discount. Don't know how many times students have been scratching their heads wondering where the author came up with a word. Good as a reference book, for ideas, but we do not use book much because there are better books.

  5. I do not have received this item yet....
Please, send me the item or return my money back.
    Thanks

5 comments about El amor en los tiempos del cólera (Oprah #59) (Spanish Edition).

  1. Las novelas más inspiradoras sobre la mujer latinoamericana son "La casa de los espíritus" de Isabel Allende, "El amor en los tiempos del cólera" de García Márquez, "Las hermanas Agüero" de Christina García, "La casa en Mango Street" de Sandra Cisneros y la que acaba de aparecer sobre la mujer de la inmigración, "El amor de Carmela me va a matar" de Eduardo González Viaña.

  2. I have enjoyed the book immensely. He describes everything in such detail that one feels totally imnmersed in the plot. No wonder Garcia Marquez, like Hemingway, earned a Nobel Prize in Literature.
    Highly recommended.

    Andrew J. Rodriguez
Award-winning author: "Adios, Havana," a Memoir

  5. Even better than the movie. It has some strong vocabulary that begins in the middle of the book. I bought it for high school students, only mature ones should read it.

5 comments about Harry Potter y la camara secreta.

  1. I ordered this used copy for a friend, and was disappointed when it arrived with damaged corners. I know it was marked used, but I wish the seller had been a little more descriptive with the appearance of the book. It is completely usable and readable though, so I am overall satisfied.

Compralo no te arrepentiras.

Dicen que la serie se enfoca mucho en la brujeria pero no es cierto. Primero que nada, la hechiceria es diabolica, y ellos hacen magia con una varita, por Dios a eso le llamas diabolico!! Por favor, Pues entonces las personas que hacen trucos de magia con varitas o que hacen ilusiones son malos tambien! La gente es bien envidiosa y si no les gusta la serie pues que no la lean.

  5. I was very pleased with both the timing and the condition of the book when I recieved it. It was as stated on the site. Thank you.
