1. I purchased this book several years ago and I was very impressed with the information that is in this book. Everything from planting instructions, soil requirements, and so on! It is also very detailed with "actual" color photos of the plants. It is a handy guide for those landscape architects and landscape contractors out there and it is very useful for the home gardener.

1. The book was used as a guide for a cross-cultural communications class. It was useful and informative.



2. This brief work gives a great overview of all of the elements that compose a zen garden. Beginning with a simple history of Japanese gardening, the author then procedes to elborate on each component of a garden and the various ways that they may be employed. The book is filled with useful drawings to help the aspiring gardener, however the all-too-few photographs in the book are less then great. A nice section of color photos showing completed gardens would have improved what is already a good work.

2. As a serious midwestern home gardener who owns many gardening books, I was extremely pleased with this book. There is much valuable information in the way of photographs and writings. Gertrude Jekyll was doing 100 yrs ago, what modern landscapers claim they invented--that is, low maintenance, informal looks. The combination of her informal plantings applied to formal settings makes a wonderfully interesting contrast. Add to that her artistic genius, and these gardens are truly awe-inspiring.

1. This is one of the few books that actually have some discussions on the design aspect of Planting Design. It involves colors, form and shapes of plants and spatial arrangement. Good discussions.

2. This is a book of 30 stunning postcards of the Monet Gardens at Giverny. Perhaps the most famous gardens in the world, Monet's Gardens at Giverny are immortalised in the great Impressionist's paintings eagerly sought by collectors and musuems. This is not a collection of the paintings, but a collection of photographs of the gardens that inspired the paintings, gardens that have been maintained by loving care and attention of patrons and volunteers for the past century.

   Elizabeth Murray, the photographer of this collection, is herself a garden designer. She spent a year as a gardener at the Giverny gardens, and brings this personal knowledge to the selection of shots and subjects. Just as Monet highlighted particular flowers, trees, lily pads, and the famous Japanese bridge, so too does Murray's photograph collection make the immediate connection to Monet's paintings.
